Pendergast Official

USC formally announced the hiring of Clancy Pendergast as defensive coordinator. Pendergast might also be able to bring in his choice at linebackers coach to replace Scottie Hazelton.
Another question could be whether secondary coach Marvin Sanders returns or Pendergast tries to bring in his own guy there too.

        • I don’t disagree that it could turn out to be great, I just think it was an extremely safe choice, and there are other names that would have been more exciting.

          • I would say it was a safe choice, but who knows what was going on behind close doors, even the wolfman was shut out, that was a given

  1. If Clancy is to be the DC then it should be his choice, confer with Kiffin, but choose his own candidate

  2. Losing Hazelton was a tremendous bonus. I’m certain that Clancy has his own candidate lined up. It would have been important to have had the new LBC on campus today. I hope through the weekend the new guy is announced.

I hope that Sanders sticks around… the kids love him and the new freedom he’ll have, by no longer being held down by Monte’s schematic chaos should energize him. It was no secret that Sanders and Monte never saw eye to eye philosophically. Now since we don’t seem to be able to replace Kiffin just yet. we simply need to replace the OLC and we might be on the road to better times.

  3. So this guy was the “Big Name” Kiffin was talking about?!? The irony is that even though Perdergast isn’t a big name, he is a good fit. He knows the Pac-12 decent recruiter and a good defensive scheme that should work better with better talent at USC.

    • Since Kiffin is a dead man walking should we consider him Kiffin’s eventual successor, or is he a placeholder like Cantu in SC hoops?

    • Exactly!….I’m going to stay in “wait and see mode”, we need to give the guy a chance and start looking at the positives

  4. Now that The Kiffer has hired a DC, he had better focus on the offense. Since there is no OC help in site and it’s obvious that in the interim The Kiffer is going to have to take the pressure off himself and the QB’s. In order to do this he will need to get down with the “X” and “O”s and develop some deceptive plays in his offensive scheme, presently there
are none. In my opinion one thing he should seriously consider is stop being a lazy @$$ and junk that tired @$$ zone blocking scheme. At least use a different blocking scheme for Silas Redd, on running plays.

He has got to find ways to let Silas Redd to do his thing, do what he does
best, and that is the Tail Back Blast. He is a N/S runner and as a minimum The Kiffer should ditch the Zone Blocking Scheme on running plays for him.

The zone-blocking scheme, some times has Redd running laterally
looking for openings instead of attacking the hole from the get (snap).
We all know that when the hole is in the “A” gaps that’s when he’s at
his best. He’s not a lateral mover. That is why he will go high in the NFL draft. He gets that extra hard 2 yards after contact when his pads are North / South.

    Just a thought
