USC v. UCLA

USC is currently No. 7 and UCLA No. 9 in the Rivals.com rankings. Scout.com, which rewards having more commitments, has the Bruins No. 6 and USC No. 10.

So here is the question: Which ranking is more important and does the fact USC is restricted mean there is validity to Scout’s formula, which I’ve previously discounted because of its quantity ove quality emphasis. Does quantity matter in the era of NCAA sanctions?

    Let me answer this one, Scottie. Of COURSE quantity counts. Depth counts. Injuries happen. Kids don’t pan out. Guys transfer, fail classes or just quit. There is no question SC has landed some very talented guys this year; even a Bruin can admit that. But it’s also clear that SC isn’t going to fill all of its holes with only 15 guys.

    Oh, but let’s wait a few more days – SC’s rankings will continue to fall as guys flee the class just before signing day. UCLA’s, on the other hand, is still getting better, including with EV on board soon.

    Quantity does matter, to agree with Sped, with respect to depth issues, guys panning out. More important than quantity and Stars is getting the guys that will work for you, who love your school. SC can do quite well if they get the right guys even with the limits, 75 guys who are all in is better than 85 spoiled brats looking for any path to the NFL. Of course you have to coach them up which Kiffin & Co. have been inconsistent. Mora’s the new guy on the block, he’s got some buzz from a good first year, though I wonder once he got the Bruins to avenge 50-0, they ran out of steam. We’ll see if he can continue to motivate next season.

      I’ve always thought of you as a classy Trojan. I think that, like me, you are a realistic and pragmatic commenter who can see the forest for the trees, unlike a lot of deluded Trojans fans that can’t seem to see past their nose.

        That is exactly the issue with SC in the upcoming couple of years with the sanctions. Much easier to predict on RB’s and WR’s as far as development than OL, although all can be tricky. Some just don’t pan out as the level of competition improves and everyone is stronger and faster and they can no longer dominate. Others catch up as their bodies mature. Couple that with the fact that Kiffin has not demonstrated the ability to “coach up” a player and I think SC will struggle for the next few years until you can find someone tu turn it back around. With the Oregon, Stanford and a resurgent UCLA happening, SC is no longer the only game in town. The overstocking of talent won’t happen with the restrictions and others will benefit and generate momentum for the future as well.

      Very interesting point about the Bruins running out of steam and whether or not Mora will continue improving next season. I think UCLA played a very good game against Stanford in the conference championship. So I wouldn’t say they exactly ran out of steam, but their heads definitely weren’t in the game against Baylor. I’d put my money on Mora improving next year and winning the South again. Then again, we’ll see how much Hundley can improve without Jonathan Franklin carrying the load.

      Quality matters with the RBs, WRs and DBs because those are positions that 5 star freshmen can immediate contribute. Quantity matters with the OL line. We need bodies and we are right now only getting 2OL. That’s going to kill us for the next couple of years because very few OL can step in as freshmen and compete against teams like Stanford. You have to age OL like wine. It takes years to teach technique and have the 18 year old grow into their bodies.The NCAA knew this when they dropped the 15 recruit limit on us.

      It’s about a Great Coaching staff, players who embrace the teachings of said coaches and executing those lessons learned in practice on Saturdays. Right now, sc seems to be lacking most importantly at the head football coach position. 75 committed, well trained guys could get the job done.

      UCLA is trending up first and foremost because of the Head Coach ability to get 100 % commitment from the guys to do what is asked of them regardless of the outcome of the contest.

    As we saw this past season (and we’ll probably see in future seasons) depth is a huge problem. Quantity is invaluable. That will be something USC is battling long after the sanctions have been lifted because it’ll still take a few more years to create a sufficient amount of depth.

    That being said, I am still very impressed that with the limited number of scholarships available, USC’s class is still rated so highly. Regardless of how this past season turned out, the coaching staff is to be commended for putting together this group of recruits.

Saying one recruit is better because he got FIVE STARS is like saying SUCks is a better school because it costs more to go there than UCLA (EVERY RECENT PUBLICATION I’ve seen, show’s UCLA ranked FAR AHEAD OF SUCks in EVERY SIGNIFICANT CATAGORY).

            UCLA will have no problem filling out it’s team with quality recruits and the Coaching department is SOLID. Same can’t be said @ Fig Tech.

    Recruiting wars continue apace, with both schools hauling in killer classes this year–both will finish in the top 10 on all three key sites (ESPN, Rivals, and Scout), and depending upon which Southland university does better between now and Feb 6, one could finish in the top 5.

    Schollie-limited depth could be an issue for the Trojans, but quality of players certainly won’t be. Their average recruit is at 4.3 stars on Scout–they are the only school in the nation to average in the 4s. The biggest enemies of UCLA next year: 1. RB questions – No Franklin, with a potentially less-than-100% Thigpen (torn ACL in SC game–guy runs a 4.3 40); 2. A very difficult road schedule, with away games vs Nebraska, Stanford, Oregon, and USC.

    With their brutal SOS, the Bruins will be fortunate to win 9 regular season games, as will the Trojans.
