I previously mentioned any self-respecting defensive coordinator would want to bring in his own people and it looks like Clancy Pendergast is doing that.
But what does this say about last year’s defensive staff? Monte Kiffin was nudged out. Scottie Hazelton would probably not be back if Nevada didn’t hire him (doubtful Pendergast wanted someone from North Dakota State. Or was it South Dakota State?). And now Marvin Sanders is out.
On the other hand, can you imagine Oregon doing this to its staff? No way. The Ducks have a good staff and continuity. USC apparently did not.
Lane Kiffin officially fired secondary coach Marvin Sanders today.
“We wish Marvin Sanders and his family the best of luck,” Kiffin said. “Marvin did a great job for us coaching our secondary and in recruiting. But with the hiring of Clancy Pendergast as our defensive coordinator, we decided to go in a different direction based on Clancy’s desire to oversee the defensive backs unit.”
Remember that during the season Kiffin said Sanders “the best secondary coach in the nation.”
One might feel better about Pat Haden going to watch Eddie Vanderdoes’ sister play basketball Tuesday night if not for the fact Haden personally recruited offensive tackle Kyle Murphy last season, who signed with Stanford.
What are the goals for the USC basketball team for the remainder of the season now that Kevin O’Neill’s been fired and Bob Cantu is in control?
Meanwhile, recruiting analyst Mike Farrell looks at USC’s recent defections and predicts defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes will sign with UCLA and defensive back Jalen Ramsey will go to Florida.
The one-time USC targets committed to UCLA today. The crosstown rivalry gets more interesting every day. Does Kylie Fitts have a little sister that Michael Cooper can offer a scholarship?
But who isn’t these days with USC recruiting? The St. John Bosco offensive lineman told Scout.com he was torn between USC and Washington.
Does it matter to you that defensive end Jason Hatcher, Sebastian LaRue, Eldridge Massington, safety Max Redfield, defensive linemen Kylie Fitts and defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes decommitted for one reason or another?
Or is USC’s class good enough to withstand defections? Or do you think Fitts or Vanderdoes ends up at USC on Signing Day?
Former USC football player and assistant coach Dennis Thurman, recently promoted to defensive coordinator by the New York Jets, hired former USC safety Tim McDonald as the Jets’ defensive backs coach. McDonald is the father of USC safety T.J. McDonald.
Is this going to get defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes to recommit to USC? Last night athletic director Pat Haden reportedly sat in the stands and watched his little sister who is a freshman score nine points in a basketball game.
It gets better. USC has offered Vanderdoes’ sister a basketball scholarship. One wonders if USC women’s coach Michael Cooper even saw her play? What are the odds Cooper will even be coaching at USC in four years?
