Southern California QB Curse?

Here’s a story from Yahoo on the lack of NFL success for quarterbacks that are from Southern California. It includes two scouts critical of Matt Barkley for not throwing at the NFL combine.

“Here we go again, another L.A. movie star quarterback who needs his own day to throw,” the scout said.

  1. Written by a Miami-FL based sports reporter. In addition it cast the net over the whole region – something Mr. Wolf implied was only against Troy.

A case can be made against the list cited but then tell me aside from Luck and Griffin who else has succeeded these past seven years out of college ball? Sanchez has taken the Jets in his first two years to AFC Championship Games – that has never been done by any Jet qb in the franchise’s history.

Cassell looked awful this year at KC, Leinart is still drifting, Palmer has gone from a bad team to another bad team.

Pros draft USC qb’s because they believe they have played in a program that is as equal to the European League. If the assumption is most if not all are a bust then pray tell the absence from the other college power houses

  2. Wolfie, you are predictable, prejudiced, biased, and should be writing for the Bruins. You have raised negativity to new lows. shame. Jim Mcgregor usc class of 1944.

      • UCLA “class” rears it’s ugly head again. Bucket ridicules overweight folks, and Jones, senior citizens. Reminds one of the handicapped parking group… were they the founders of the “classy cadre”?

        • I agree with your critique of Sped, and that was completely classless and uncalled for, but it would carry more weight if not so many of fellow USC fans posted homophobic and racial slurs. Those slurs were an everyday occurrence until Wolf or somebody started to censor their comments, then they some fans started self-correcting and self-censoring, but there are still too many of those comments on here. It goes both ways and for fans of both teams. Just my two cents.

          • People are people, and there are always bad apples. No excuses on either side of this rivalry for racial slurs, homophobia, and attacking the elderly…

    • What?? Wolf actually has a point with this post. Barkley set himself up for criticism by spurning the NFL combine as far as throwing goes.

      • Unfortunately many fans think stopping Scott will stop all the bad news coming out of Heritage Hall.

        • Well put, marvgoux1. No one likes bad news, and I don’t agree with every single thing Wolf posts, but valid critiques are good for re-evaluation purposes.

  3. Funny how that article leaves out Jay Schraeder who lead the Redskins to a Super Bowl. He went to Palisades. And is a good guy.

  4. If they are so bad why do they keep getting drafted? If Barkley’s agent felt he needed to be at the combine he would be there. QBs taken in the first round tend to go to bad teams with no O Line.

  5. Carson Palmer was a stud QB until injured. But the bottom line is that it’s very hard to make it in the NFL as a QB, let alone a successful NFL QB. I was surprised that Nick Foles was the first Arizona Wildcat to throw a pass in the NFL. I will say that more QBs do seem to come from Texas. Foles was from Texas, along with Aikman. Where was Rodney Peete from? He wasn’t a star in the NFL, but he had a long career. I will say that living here in Arizona, I was surprised that SC didn’t recruit Brett Hundley. Both Kessler and Wittek were recruited over him. Moon does have a point. The QBs seem to come from rich areas like south OC, where private coaching is provided for these kids. Also, if SC continues to go with the pro-style offense and QB, there are less and less pro-style QBs to select from. More high schools are running the option. I guess on the flip side, if you are a pro-style QB, there aren’t as many colleges to select from.

  6. If memory serves me correctly, there was a pretty good week in 2010 for former USC quarterbacks. Palmer, Cassell, Sanchez, and Leinart all started regular season games for NFL teams. Booty was on the Vikings practice squad. Last week Corp re-signed with the Bills. Just a bit of trivia about all those crappy ex-Trojan QB’s.
