Defensive Tackle Christian Heyward Not On Spring Roster

Heyward is not on the roster USC released for spring practice. Neither is tight end Junior Pomee, who is suspended from team activities pending his legal problems. Also gone is defensive lineman DeVante Wilson and center Abe Markowitz, who apparently must elsewhere to play a sixth year.

Lane Kiffin has not addressed Heyward’s absence.

USC v. UCLA

Now that the coaching staff is completed, who has the better staff? I’d say the Bruins get the obvious edge at offensive coordinator with Noel Mazzone over Clay Helton (and Lane Kiffin). Defensive coordinator is more of a toss-up especially with Jim Mora’s defensive background.

The offensive line could spark a greater debate (Adrian Klemm v. Mike Summers). Maybe USC gets the edge at defensive line (Ed Orgeron v. Angus McClure).

Any thoughts?

Matt Barkley was asked by NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci if he regretted anything from last season. “Being more assertive or direct, with the players or with the staff, in how I wanted the ball to move across the field,” Barkley said.

USC Morning Buzz

The defensive backs ran the 40 at the NFL combine this morning and three USC players participated: T.J. McDonald (4.59), Nickell Robey (4.53) and Jawanza Starling (4.64). Robey’s time probably did not help because he is a cornerback and not a safety like McDonald and Starling.
