Do You Fly Commercial Or Charter?

A new perk being discussed during basketball contract negotiations is taking chartered flights. Wichita State takes chartered flights to its games and you can bet Gregg Marshall would demand it if he went somewhere else.

A college coach told me today he suspects Steve Alford will demand chartered flights with UCLA. Wonder what USC will tell a coach who asks for that perk?

Minnesota Also Wants Andy Enfield

A Minnesota TV station reports the Gophers are interested in Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield. Minnesota is a savvy athletic dept. as athletic director Norwood Teague hired Shaka Smart at VCU. And Teague knows Enfield already through a coaching network program started at VCU called Villa 7.

Things are getting interesting. Let’s see who acts fastest.

Florida Gulf Coast Coach Andy Enfield Comment Today

Here’s what Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield said today according to the Fort Myers, Fla., News-Press.

“I’m not going to comment or speculate on anything,” Enfield said. “We had a game to play last night and we were totally focused on that. I understand the speculation is part of the business.”

Freaks (And Stat) Geeks

With 17 players out, USC held a brief 52- play scrimmage. Here’s some stats:

Cody Kessler 5-9, 99 yards, 2 TD

Max Wittek 3-5, 84 yards, 1 TD

*Max Browne did not play as much as Kessler/Wittek

Buck Allen 13-71 yards

Justin Davis 11-54 yards, 2 TD

Nelson Agholor 3-93 yards, 2 TD

Josh Shaw 4.5

J.R. Tavai 4 (1.5 sacks)

Even USC Should Be Able To Hire Andy Enfield

Consider some of the things Florida Gulf Coast does not have like all the other Sweet 16 basketball programs.

1.) A shoe deal with Nike or Adidas. Florida Gulf Coast buys its own equipment and gear because it has no sponsors.

2.) A fully staffed coaching and administrative staff. USC does not lack when it comes to hiring people for sports.

3.) Florida Gulf Coast’s Alico Arena seats 4,500. The Galen Center seats 10,258.

Looks like even USC should be able to close this deal.

Matt Barkley To Work Out For Buffalo Bills

The Bills were conspicuous in their absence at USC Pro Day because they need a QB and draft eighth. So Barkley seems a candidate if Geno Smith is already gone. But they will meet Barkley on Monday.

If Smith is gone, would Buffalo take Barkley? Respected NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock says Barkley is a late-first round pick.

USC Morning Buzz

Here some impressions of the USC basketball coaching candidates:

Gregg Marshall, Wichita State: Imagine being the King of Wichita and then being told to play second fiddle to Lane Kiffin.

Mike Hopkins, Syracuse assistant: I have a soft spot for someone I saw play at Mater Dei but I wonder if Syracuse might prefer him getting USC job so it can hire someone else to replace Jim Boeheim.

Andy Enfield, Florida Gulf Coast: What does USC really know about him?

Tim Floyd, UTEP: Has a loyal following of boosters lobbying away. Who supplies the nicotine gum if he comes back?

Tony Bennett, Virginia: I seem to be the only one pushing for him to get the job.

Ben Howland, ex-UCLA: If he coached at any other school, he would probably be at top of the list.

Reggie Theus: USC beaten to the punch by Cal State Northridge.

Mike Brown: After coaching LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, how would you like your cell phone calls being monitored by the compliance office?
