Shifting Defensive Line Numbers

USC starts spring practice low on defensive linemen. Three linemen on no longer on the team (Christian Heyward, Christian Thomas, DeVante Wilson); three linemen are hurt (Greg Townsend, J.R. Tavai, Cody Temple) and there were four expected defensive linemen (Kylie Fitts, Eddie Vanderdoes, Jason Hatcher, Torrodney Prevot) decommitted.

“We have to go with what we have,” defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast said.

    Yep, that’s not so pretty, from the depth and options POV.

    Nor is the range of choices regarding certain positions on the OL. I don’t know what JC OL guys were around besides the one who chose Texas, but I hope Kiffin knew to go after them. Obviously, it would have helped to have an appealing new OL coach in place earlier. Perhaps Kiffin didn’t realize that was advisable during the season. Too many OC duties to be the master strategic planner? Just askin’…

    Kiffin dug 50% of the hole he is in. The sanctions hurt, and then his material number of critical errors made it worse.
