USC Morning Buzz

Here some impressions of the USC basketball coaching candidates:

Gregg Marshall, Wichita State: Imagine being the King of Wichita and then being told to play second fiddle to Lane Kiffin.

Mike Hopkins, Syracuse assistant: I have a soft spot for someone I saw play at Mater Dei but I wonder if Syracuse might prefer him getting USC job so it can hire someone else to replace Jim Boeheim.

Andy Enfield, Florida Gulf Coast: What does USC really know about him?

Tim Floyd, UTEP: Has a loyal following of boosters lobbying away. Who supplies the nicotine gum if he comes back?

Tony Bennett, Virginia: I seem to be the only one pushing for him to get the job.

Ben Howland, ex-UCLA: If he coached at any other school, he would probably be at top of the list.

Reggie Theus: USC beaten to the punch by Cal State Northridge.

Mike Brown: After coaching LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, how would you like your cell phone calls being monitored by the compliance office?

On Hopkins, it’s just the opposite. if anything, they would possibly try to block the hire. Next to JB, he is the face of the Syracuse program. The only reason he would leave Syracuse is to come back home to a situation he most likely believes has great potential to become a national power in basketball, given the location, the local talent pool, Galen and the tradition. USC has excelled at almost every other sport on a national level other than basketball, with the exception of an occasional tournament run over the years. It used to be the Sports Arena was the excuse. It’s a football school, etc. Funny how that hasn’t affected the other programs at school.

I’m wondering that logic too on Hopkins. Why wouldSyracuse want him o leaves they can hire someone else? They’ve been grooming Hopkins for years. My concern is Hopkins comes to USC and leaves when Boeheim does retire.

This is that rare moment I wish Wolf responded to comments, because that assertion about Hopkins is one of the most nonsensical he has ever made.

Why would we want Mike Hopkins when the NCAA is investigating the Syracuse mens basketball program for major violations? How do we know he isn’t tainted? That would be as dumb as hiring Cynthia Cooper, or Lane Kiffin.

  • Theus? Come on Scott. He’s a dog and the only guy lackey could hire.

  • Floyd would be a horrible choice.

  • If Howland wasn’t such an ahole, he’d already be at SC.

    Scott can be quite funny:

“Mike Brown: After coaching LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, how would you like your cell phone calls being monitored by the compliance office?”
