Offensive coordinator Clay Helton did not want to confirm Thursday the claim from Lane Kiffin that he turned down two top-five programs in the offseason. And what about playcalling for next season?

“Being able to do your role, having the offensive coordinator title, helping our offense, is more than enough for me,” Helton said. “We’ll see what happens in the fall.”

And offensive line coach Mike Summers explained what Zach Banner needs to do to improve: “Too many times, he gets out of position.”

Freshman QB Max Browne had his best practice of the spring, according to Lane Kiffin. Browne completed a 65-yard yard pass to WR George Farmer, albeit against a walk-on defensive back.

Tailback Justin Davis was named the practice MVP after a strong performance. Kiffin also complimented linebacker Hayes Pullard for taking over a role as team leader.

“It goes back to the bowl practices, he made a decision that this was going to be his defense,” Kiffin said. “He became more vocal.”

“The big question was his shoulder. He’s fine now,” McShay said. “I think he’s a late first-round pick.”

He also spoke about West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith: “He’s the only quarterback I feel confident about that belongs in the first round.”

A few years ago, Peyton Manning showed up at USC one day to work out while in Los Angeles. He worked out with USC’s receivers on Cromwell Field and put on a display with his accuracy and arm strength.

Matt Barkley’s workout on the same field yesterday did not show the same arm strength or accuracy. NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said Manning’s arm is not as strong as Joe Flacco but that Barkley needs to rely on the same things that make Manning successful.

“Peyton Manning is a great quarterback because of his timing, anticipation and accuracy,” Mayock said. “Those are the qualities Barkley can succeed with. It’s all about timing, anticipation and accuracy.”

Vandermade’s held an administrative title at USC for several years but actually helped coach the offensive line. He will join new Loyola coach Marvin Sanders, who was fired from USC when Clancy Pendergast took over as the Trojans’ defensive coordinator.

Former USC assistant Kennedy Polamalu, whose son is a quarterback at Loyola, is behind these coaching moves. There have been rumors Polamalu might also coach at Loyola.

During yesterday’s Pro Day, one problem was the new field turf that was installed at Cromwell Field over Christmas Break. The players slipped during the 40-yard dash and during some of the cone drills that required sharp cuts.

“It was not good at all,” defensive end Wes Horton said. “It got uneven.”
