Don’t Expect Su’a Cravens At Cornerback

USC might lack quality cornerbacks but Lane Kiffin said freshman Su’a Cravens is too big to play true cornerback.

“He’s 225 pounds and he could be 235,” Kiffin said. “He’s too big.”

Cravens will still play nickel back, however, during the season.

  1. Another dumb comment, if he fast enough and can cover that’s what matters not his size.

  2. Could we possibly, hopefully, maybe be seeing a reincarnation of a Matt Grootegoed type in Su’a? Man I miss that Trojan… I wish we had 5 of them on defense. I wish we had him on the coaching staff.

  3. If Pendergast thought Cravens could succeed as a four-down CB, Cravens would already have been moved to CB. LK and CP are well aware of the defensive vulnerabilities.

As Kiffin describes Cravens, he is more likely to play 235-pound “true linebacker”. In my limited understanding of the 3-4, the outside LBs rush the QB, tackle RB’s on the edge, and drop off in short-route coverage. Cravens would seem to have all the needed capabilities, if injuries require him to play there.

If Bailey and Bowman come back strong, then, by USC’s current short-roster standards, safety may be an overstocked position in 2013.
