Marqise Lee And Nelson Agholor Playing Cornerback Next Season?

Lane Kiffin said tonight he thought about switching wide receivers Marqise Lee and Nelson Agholor to cornerback this week because of the Trojans’ woes at the position.

“I don’t know how they could take that amount of plays,” Kiffin said. “Even if they were in for a limited role, my fear is it would would take away from the offense.”

This cannot give great comfort to USC’s current cornerbacks knowing they could be replaced by someone who is not even practicing at the spot.

  1. This doesn’t put the quote into the correct context. Someone asked Kiffin SPECIFICALLY if he’s thought about putting Lee at corner and he replied that he THOUGHT about it.

He then explained that it wouldn’t be a good idea.

Someone can also ask if he’s heard of Bucket’s crush on Wolf.

    • I think that Scott is getting sort of petty on this one. However, I also think that Kiffin could improve on his self-censorship, and say less when answering a question that seems very fanciful on its face.

    • I do think that Kiffin should ask himself whether any of the BACK-UP WRs might succeed well at DB. The 3rd WR position didn’t get much action last year. Unless Kiffin plans a major change there, why keep a potentially effective DB on the bench, waiting for a few plays per game at WR?

      • While I agree with you on some points, I don’t think a starting ncaa receiver should be on the other side of the ball except maybe on a dime or prevent package like Troy Brown did with the Patriots.

From what I’ve seen in practice, Pendergast’s 5-2 alignment will rely heavily on man-on-man coverage in the backfield. Before summer camp starts, USC should look hard at picking up an additional 3 star player who might’ve been overlooked and the JC guys.

        • I am skeptical that, this late in the recruiting cycle, USC could pick up a DB to improve on their current group. Maybe a Div. I transfer, but he probably wouldn’t be eligible in 2013.

I’m not at all sure that, this late in the preparation for 2013, Flournoy, Blackwell, Rogers, or Mitchell could add a lot at CB, if one did move over.

Few would disagree with you that Lee or Agholor will or should play CB with any regularity. Fatigue leads to under-performance and injuries.

It’s much more likely that, on a lot of downs USC will play some hybrid of the 3-4 that involves zone coverage.

It is conceivable that 2013 might be a successful season with regard to defending the pass, but it’s not the way to bet your money. 🙁

I saw a quote from Haden that he is grading Kiffin and the staff “on a curve”, and that the most difficult years of the sanction period lie ahead. It sure makes sense. Depth will progressively deteriorate from the short recruiting classes, and then there will be a two-year bulge of freshmen, only a few of whom are ready to play.

Because USC didn’t even get its 15 the last two years, 2013 will probably be the worst year of all. Not definitely, but probably.

It’s fair to expect good fundamentals and better schemes, along with creative efforts to work around depth issues. In addition, I hope that Kiffin is exploring how to position USC’s training and conditioning methods at the cutting edge of injury prevention. However, high rankings seem like a long shot to me.

  2. So….lemme get this straight….RAH RAH’s predicted the D-Back play would be much better than last year (NOT!). Offense lights it up during practice, WHY? Because Q.B.’s wear RED JERSEYS and have all day to throw against inept D-Backs. Running backs have GREAT DAYS when going against SUCks Defense…..just like Dillon did a few years back. Barfy ALWAYS LOOKED good when practicing against SUCks defense, and followed up by throwing more than a few picks during games.
If it looks like Crap, Smells like Crap, it’s probably CRAP….
    fit on torgans!
    5 & 8….It’s gonna be just G-R-E-A-T!!!!!!!

    • Mr. Madison, what you have just said, is the most insanely idiotic thing I have ever heard. At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

  3. Told you… Kiffin realizes his self-esteemed playbook & playcalling can’t outscore the opponent unless the defense plays well enough. Pendergast is now the powerbroker on this coaching staff. What lolita (Clancy) wants….
