Flashback to Mark Sanchez

Remember when Pete Carroll ripped Mark Sanchez for going pro early? Maybe one reason Sanchez did was because he was worried his stock would slip if he waited another year and risked injury/slumping.

Sanchez certainly looks like he made the right call if you look at where he went and then consider how Matt Barkley slipped to the second round in this draft.

  1. He might have gotten paid, but as for a career, he is now a punch line. “Butt Fumble.”

If he stayed, he might have learned how to play QB.

    • If he didn’t know after 3 years, why would one more year make any difference. It certainly didn’t help Matt Barkley.

        • Did staying an extra year improve Matt Barkley’s mechanics and understanding of the game? Or did his stock go down as he became a pinata and threw inexplicable interceptions during our 7-6 debacle?

    • Exactly. Does anyone think that a team would’ve taken him in the 1st round last year?

If we’re talking about anyone’s stock dropping drastically, we should be talking about Robert Woods and Robey.

      • Mel Kiper Jr did. Go back and read about how highly regarded Matt was after our 50-0 annihilation of fucla. It seems like a century ago, but the scouts were drooling over him. Instead he waited for the first draft in decades to only take one QB in the first round.

  2. This is a catch 22…. Sanchez may have made the right descision for his pocketbook, but did he make the best descision based on his one year of starting experience & ability? He could have stayed an extra year and improved his mechanics & understanding of the game. Is this why just about every year, the Jets try to bring in another QB?

  3. dtksr1 @dslextreme.com has it! gotroy22, experience matters whether you’re a surgeon or an NFL QB, both require a complex skill set that takes time to master. The best thing for Barkley is to go to the New England Patriots and learn from the masters. The Patriots had the best first round last night, they traded out and cleaned out the Vikings in the process!

    • I said the Pats would be an ideal destination for him in another post. =) Look at how well Matt Cassel did.

    • So why not go to the Pats last year and get the first year of NFL apprenticeship under your belt being Brady’s caddy instead of wasting a year being tutored by the dubious offensive genius that is Lane Kiffin?
