Back To The NFL Draft

Things are about to kick off in New York and Matt Barkley will be a prime topic in the opening picks of the second round with the Jaguars and Eagles with two of the first three picks.

USC-Hawaii Game on CBS Sports Network

Now that seems like an odd choice for a USC game. Was Fuel TV unavailable? I guess it is better than the little-seen Pac-12 Network. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. in Hawaii, which is 8 p.m. in Los Angeles on Aug. 29.

USC Morning Buzz

The NFL draft resumes today and the Jaguars (33rd overall) and the Eagles (35th) could both use quarterbacks, which is good news for Matt Barkley (and Geno Smith).

There are a quite a few big names still floating out there like Manti Te’o and, of course, Robert Woods. Alabama tailback Eddie Lacy and Stanford tight end Zach Ertz also remain undrafted.

So if Barkley slips past 35th, could he wait for a long time before he gets drafted?

Flashback to Mark Sanchez

Remember when Pete Carroll ripped Mark Sanchez for going pro early? Maybe one reason Sanchez did was because he was worried his stock would slip if he waited another year and risked injury/slumping.

Sanchez certainly looks like he made the right call if you look at where he went and then consider how Matt Barkley slipped to the second round in this draft.

Matt Barkley Shut Out Of First Round

There was no first-round surprise and all those mock drafts that showed Matt Barkley slipping out of the first round proved accurate. Wide receiver Robert Woods also was not selected.

But back to Barkley, I wonder if he really thinks he would have been a second rounder last year?

Time Running Out For USC First Rounder

There are only three picks left and four Pac-12 schools (Oregon, Utah, Washington, UCLA) had players selected. Matt Barkley and Robert Woods are still available.

I find it extremely difficult to believe Barkley slips this low if he came out a year ago.
