USC Morning Buzz

CBS Sports computer guru Jerry Palm did his bowl projections and does not have USC playing in a bowl game. Palm has Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Utah in bowl games. Palm must really think USC will have a new coach in 2014. List here.

    • After looking at UCLA’s schedule this year, just curious what you think your record will be?

      • 9-4 I think would be a reasonable expectation considering the schedule and the losses of Datone, Jet, and Big Joe. 9-4 would be a success. Expectations will be much higher in 2014……10 win minimum.

What about Southern Cal? 8-5 maybe? What does it take for Kiffy to retain his position?

        • SonofWestwood is an honest poster, and should never be lumped in with the trolls.

I think Kiffin needs to win 10 games to definitely keep his job–OR, he needs to finish strong with 6-7 in a row. Key to it is that he CANNOT lose to both UCLA and Notre Dame this year. With 7 home games and no Oregon game (and a weaker out of conference schedule than most years), if USC doesnt win at least 9 it’s a completely lost year.

I personally think USC probably wins 9-10 and makes a Holiday Bowl appearance. 9 wins puts Haden in a tough position–under 9 and its easy to fire Kiffin, 10 or more and Kiffin definitely stays. 9 makes it very interesting.

          • Thanks for the kind words. I think 9 wins with as you said wins over UCLA and ND could do it, but only because the 2015 recruiting class is so critical (first full class post-sanctions) and your staff has already begun working on those relationships and have all proven to be great recruiters.

Also, I think UCLA could very easily go 7-6 this year and not consider it a complete disaster……I just think our staff is better than that.

          • There are only three games on the schedule that I think USC will definitely win: Hawaii, Utah and Colorado. They should beat BC and Cal.. They might beat Utah State and Wazzou. They will lose to Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona State and ND. They should will lose to Arizona. They might lose to UCLA.

They could go anywhere from 5-8 to 8-5. I don’t see nine wins on the schedule. But we will see after the Utah State game.

    • When was the last time a “Trogie” (or “Trogy”, if singular?) said any such thing?

      • Spudjones lives in a closet and doesn’t get out very often. Word on the street, bucket is his only visitor….ouch!!!

  2. We should make a minor bowl at the minimum, which is considered a great year at Uni High.

  3. USC plays 13 games this year – if Kiffin loses two he’s gone – I’d give him one loss against Stanford – keeps the job even though he loses again to Stanford for the Pac-12 Championship. The team has the easiest road schedule since before PC era – road – HI, Notre Dame, AZ St., OR St. CO & CA. No way does he retain the job with any other loss – the home schedule is not that daunting save Stanford and UCLA – WA St., Boston College, UT, Stanford, AZ, UCLA.

Problem for Kiffin is the historical also rans (CO, CA, WA St., AZ, UCLA) have all found good coaches – the only hope Kiffin has is that these new coaches are still finding their sea legs but this is the last chance for him.

The biggest blunder Kiffin made was pushing the scholarship out instead of taking it on immediately – he’d now have his full scholarship team in hand for his 4th year as HC. That decision alone speaks volumes of his not thinking the impact through. He’d be able to go with full contact practices. He probably would have gotten rid of his father sooner.

Real problem for Kiffin is he is a micro-manager his time mgmt. skill’s are awful.

  4. Will/did Oregon’s “Self Imposed” probation include Bowl Ban?
