USC Offensive Lineman Zach Banner Says He Will No Longer Play Basketball

Banner, who redshirted last football season, said “this wasn’t a decision by coaches, nor was it anyone else. It was mine alone.”

It is not a surprising decision because Banner did not challenge for a starting job during spring football practice and offensive line coach Mike Summers said Banner needed to become more consistent.

He was on the basketball team for a couple months this past season but did not play in a game.

  1. Good to see that he wants to focus on football and improve. I’m sure juggling two big time sports on top of classes is more than a full load.

  2. I’m glad that Summers is demanding–with Banner and with Graf. The expectations must change for the performance to change.

Banner starts out too tall for the position. If he wants to be a pro, it will require everything he’s got to learn how to overcome that. Glad for him that he decided it was needed.
