Water Polo School

USC men’s and women’s water polo coach Jovan Vavic won his 12th NCAA title last weekend. That reminds me of a conversation I had with former athletic director Mike Garrett in the late 90’s.

“I heard you wanted to fire (Vavic),” I told Garrett.

“I did,” he replied.

Back to today, it seems like some at USC are embracing water polo’s success simply as a way to mask what happened in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball this season.

  1. I realize that you threw in the qualifier “some”, but why can’t everyone USC enjoy and celebrate the success of the water polo teams without it somehow being viewed as a “smoke screen” for the lack of success by the other sports teams?….. because it’s the World According to Wolf, that’s why…….

  2. Pathetic conclusion, Scott. A football school that embraces one of the smaller sports when it wins a national title is doing so to “mask” 7 – 6 football season? Try attending a few of these games….

    • Do you think 99.9% of us SC football fans would bother to go to a water polo match? Just admit that if SC dropped water polo tomorrow you wouldn’t give a rip.

      • “some at USC are embracing water polo’s success” (aka water polo fans/loyal Trojans). If USC drops men’s water polo, I hope the football team picks up the tough, well-conditioned athletes who play the sport.

How fuking lame can one get?

Please, please, please Daily News, get someone other than the wolfman to run this blog. The crap this guy continues to write is ridiculous. He’s been reduced to nothing more than a biased idiot

The only support he gets around here is from bucket, which is fueled by his unwavering man crush

  4. I’m surprised Wolf didn’t save that wild story about Garrett for his forthcoming book.

  5. wolfman, BINGO!!! that is exactly it!!!

we have all seen the Dummies around here and the Nabobs before them totally disavow women’s sports!!! (what else can you do, when your school is the face of collegiate misogyny??)

so NOW the trOXans HAVE to celebrate women’s sports cause they have no mens programs worth a spit?? pure hypocrisy, like Don Cheney and Rob Portman supporting gay rights only when it affects THEIR family and their hands are FORCED!!!

    thanks for the GUMBALL, wolfman!!!!

    • Try to show a little self-respect for yourself. You keep making a fool of yourself, but for some odd reason you enjoy it, that’s not normal behavior.

Your brain is broken, get it repaired

Three hard kicks to the crotch!….ouch!

  6. Water Polo, tennis, crew, golf. Haden is laying the ground work of a college sports juggernaut! Football, basketball and baseball are next! The Trojan Nation is rising, the sleeping giant is awakening! FIGHT ON!

  7. Scott, should the school NOT celebrate championships? I know you want to diminish the accomplishments of these threatens, but if you don’t try to win championships in all sports, why fund them? And when you do, you celebrate them.

I don’t see this s being about football or basketball at all. USC should strive for excellence in all it does. It has in water polo. It’s a great accomplishment that Trojans everywhere should appreciate. And perhaps sportswriters should write on its own merit rather than make every damn accomplishment about Kiffin.
