USC Morning Buzz

Last week we mentioned that college football analyst Phil Steele ranked USC No. 6 in his preseason magazine. Here’s the USC team pages from the magazine, where he says, “USC goes from a disappointing team to a Surprise Team.”

      • 35-40. OL, QB and DB and depth are major areas of concern, not to mention a head coach who is a moron. This team could finish under .500 if they quit on Kiffin like they did at the Sun Bowl and I don’t see this team “surprising” anyone with a 12-1, 11-2 year.

        • I agree with you on the unanswered questions at QB and DB, but think that their OL will be fine, and their QB’s (Wittek and Kessler) are both entering their 3rd year in the system, so I am cautiously optimistic…..Their DL’s and LB’s will hopefully shorten the field for their offense and the special teams are among the Top 30…..12-1? 11-2?….no, more like 9-3…..and the team has too much pride to quit this year…

          • The d will be awful, it’s a patchwork coaching staff, no DB coach, it will get torched by every decent QB they face. An early loss to a clunker of a team and they will tank, look for 8-5 or 7-6, maybe worse.

          • Thanks for your insight…There are certainly numerous talented QB’s this year in the Pac-12 (Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Oregon State), so I guess we’ll find out for more in about 80 days….

        • Remember, the x-factor is that Kiffin’s job might be on the line

I’m sure he loves his house by the beach

      • No returning starting quarterback and bad head coach returning to a team that quit on him last year makes us a non-top 25 team. It doesn’t mean one of the three aspiring starters doesn’t catch fire especially with the outstanding Marquis Lee at WR to throw to and our cream puff schedule, but you don’t rank them to begin the season.

        • I have never liked pre-season rankings anyway….what purpose do they really serve?…..they should wait at least until week #4 before the teams are ranked, IMO…..

          • If you put your money where your mouth is, pre-season ranking are very important…. square!

    • It’s just a subjective opinion and Phil has strong beliefs as to why he leans this way. The guy is one of the best in feeling the pulse of college football. He’s has been a consistent money maker for people in the betting world

      • TorganFag….you do realize ” ONE OF THE BEST”, Phil, the “money maker” had U Stupid Cheaters ranked at #4 last year when you actually finished UN!!!!! About that “Feeling the Pulse” nonsense, I suggest you take a look at “Coaches on The Hotseat” to get a better picture of SCUm football. Good news is….Coaches on the hotseat has you guys ranked #! !!!!!!!!
        fit UN Torgans!

  1. 8-5, 10-2, 7-6 the last three years… I suppose the pendulum could swing back.

    • One would have to admit that the significant scholarship limitations and inordinate number of injuries (more than 20?) to key players have taken its toll…….Plus, their schedule is rather weak and it plays out nicely for the team to get their sea legs and build their confidence after the first few games…..

      • And if they screw up even one of those early games the team could tank. Kiffin is known for fawking away games he should win. If you care about USC football, you may hope they blow so Kiffin can be shown the door, if he comes back for another year, it will just prolong the agony, he just isn’t very good at being a head coach.

        • I’m too much of a USC fan to actually hope that they tank this year just be rid of their head coach, even Kiffin…..if he isn’t good enough, I trust that he will be let go…..It’s a make it or break it year, and he knows that….Question: I realize that it’s a bit premature, but who would you replace Kiffin with as head coach?….

          • I don’t follow college football close enough to see who is out there, but there has to be a coach that is far better than Kiffin. The problem is that Haden wants USC to be Stanford and ND, so it probably makes no difference anyway. USC should be a monster is every sport, but they go cheap on many coaches and don’t do extensive searches, so you get what you pay for as well as what you look for.

          • So now we should completely clean house?… not only does the head coach of the football team need to go, but the AD, as well?…..Let’s give some credit to the other schools, shall we?….Oregon and Stanford have been on a recruiting tear lately, and don’t underestimate either of the Arizona schools either……heck, even UCLA has stepped their game….

          • What’s that got to do with Kiffin being an incompetent coach ? And where did I say the AD had to go ? Truth be told, Haden will sink USC faster than any AD they have ever had. He’s not going to like the recent APR number and that spells trouble for USC football.

          • You clearly stated “Haden wants USC to be Stanford and ND, so it probably makes no difference anyway.”……if that is, in fact, the case, that would be another handicap to our success, no?….Therefore, get rid of the AD….And how does the APR spell “trouble for USC football”?…..Haden may not like the number, but A) It is well beyond the minimum requirement and B) It’s better than Cal’s…..we are fine with regard to the APR….do you honestly think with the amount of revenue that USC football generates that the coaches, let alone the university, will allow that (a poor APR) to happen?…think about it…you’re making a mountain out of molehill, man….

          • Haden will not accept USC being 9th in the PAC 12 in APR, he just won’t. He’s a freaking Rhodes Scholar and has admitted that guys he played with had no business in college, he detests dumb jocks and he won’t stand for 9th ranked APR teams under his watch. You think Kiffin cares about the APR ? He majored in Leisure Studies at Fresneck State, he’s a freaking dullard who got where he is via his daddy and nothing else.
