Thanks for the great blog and superb reporting. Important question: Why does the university limit the amount of photos of Layla Kiffin? I’ve scene pics removed from USC athletic website postings from various events she attends with Lane. And if you look at the photos released from the “Football for For CHICKS 101″, there was only one close-up of her, and only a few of her far off in the background. I thought she was hosting the event??? This happens all the time. I’d have to imagine she is around a lot more than what the photos represent… I believe this issue/scandal deserves more of your attention. She is hot and among the only positives with the football program right now… Thank you.
A: I have not spoken to anyone in the athletic dept. about this but I suspect it was noted there were all kinds of pictures of her on the Internet during their time at Tennessee and USC prefers to keep coaches’ wives in the background. I would agree that you would barely know she hosts the Football For Ladies 101 based on USC’s promotions.

wolfman, do you think Max Wittek can recover from the shell-shocking he received against ND and GA tech?? it is hard to forget the “get me outta here!” look on his face in the bowl game!! i suggested all along that Kiff would regret not playing the Pious Passer’s backups more last season instead of padding Pious’ stats at every opportunity!! we have seen how a freshman can have his confidence shattered by putting them into bad situations.
so two part question:
1) can Wittek recover? (i say no)
2) did the Pious Passer exacerbate the situation by goofing off during the bowl game rather than encouraging Witteck or showing some support?? i watched the game and they kept showing Pious off to the side way behind the bench cutting up with some buddy of his, laughing and joking as Wittteck was falling apart.
A: Max Wittek is a well-grounded person and will not be affected by the Sun Bowl. I think he is glad he played even if the offense struggled. If you ever talk to Wittek, you will feel like he is more honest than quite a few predecessors or to put it more bluntly, his Mater Dei predecessors.
Now to the second part of your question. I was at an airport a couple months ago and ran into a USC football player. One of the things the player criticized was Matt Barkley’s leadership during the run-up to the bowl game because he felt Barkley lost some interest once he got hurt and knew he was not going to play. One could argue it is only natural to feel that way once you get hurt but Barkley was such a high-profile player, apparently some teammates noticed.

I often hear your voice in the press conferences so I assume you are attending many of the practices.
However, I never hear you quote a player directly, interview a player, or report anything happening at practice beyond your euro gradings.
Are those reporting activities not allowed by USC?
A: During football season I write stories every day and you will find I quote players daily. We are allowed to interview players though Lane Kiffin has severely restricted access to interviewing them in the past year.
