Athlon Weighs In On Lane Kiffin

NCAA Football: Sun Bowl-Southern California vs Georgia Tech
The football preseason magazine wrote about USC coach Lane Kiffin in its Pac-12 preview.
“As he enters his fourth season leading the USC program, Kiffin finds himself in a situation that includes few happy endings. Either he is the man who couldn’t withstand the NCAA’s crippling punishment, or the guy who just didn’t capture the right tone in Troy.”

  3. “Yea, can I get a Grand Slam breakfast, eggs overeasy, white toast, with prunes instead of potatoes delivered to the 50 yard line please? The name is Kitten, Lame Kitten. If you can get here is 30 minutes or less, I’ll give you one of the Hello Kitty Iphone Cases for free!”

  4. Certainly, the sanctions are hurting, and hurting in
    important direct and indirect ways.

    Personally, I don’t like it at all when Kiffin publicly
    criticizes the quality of his players: “When we go to our 2’s, they are what our 3’s used to be when I was here before (on Carroll’s staff).”

    First of all, it does not seem like the way to get the most
    from the players, so it seems like a poor coaching strategy.

    Moreover, from 2010 to 2013, 56 5-star and 4-star players have enrolled at USC. If the “1’s” comprise 22 players, then the “2’s” are all 5-star and 4-star players, and even with attrition, there ought to be a couple of those 56 players to play on the “3’s.” On the surface, Kiffin’s quote does not make much logical sense.

    Furthermore, these are basically Kiffin’s recruits. And he could potentially have 5 more of his own recruits, but for a variety of factors, some of which are his fault.

    If we’re going to compare Kiffin’s teams to Carroll’s teams,
    consider the following: Carroll’s teams played a lot better defense; Carroll’s teams played less predictable offense;
    Carroll’s teams were known for effective halftime adjustments, and played noticeably better than Kiffin’s teams in the second half; Carroll managed the clock a lot better than Kiffin.

    I repeat: certainly, the sanctions are hurting, and hurting in important direct and indirect ways.

    I add: certainly, coaching failures have hurt in important direct and indirect ways.

    When I read an misguided quote like the one above, I am
    inclined to wonder if coaching failures are going to hurt again in 2013?
