USC Saturday Buzz

Lane Kiffin said at Pac-12 media day he might pick a starting quarterback “in a week or a month.” But does it matter that ESPN radio host Collin Cowherd endorsed Cody Kessler as the starter this week?
Here’s why I mention it. I’ve already noted Cowherd is Kiffin’s biggest cheerleader in the media. When Kiffin was hired at USC, he asked Cowherd’s show for a weekly guest spot. Cowherd is very cozy with him and the pair had dinner Wednesday night, according to Kiffin. Did Kiffin happen to tell Cowherd who he thinks will start at quarterback?
Maybe. Maybe not. But it will be interesting to see if Cowherd’s endorsement turns out to be right.

  1. wolfman, you are so intelligent, sometimes i find my self literally agog at your powers of deduction.

memo to readers: you can take the wolfman’s conjecture to the BANK!!! (jabbing index finger)

and really, as obtuse as Kiff appears to be, even he recognizes that having Witteck with his “G-G-Get Me Outta Here” expression would be a disaster!!! much as I’D like to see it!!!

    bravo, wolfman, BRA-VO!!!

  2. QB doesn’t matter that much at USC, Play Defense and Win. Don’t Play Defense and Lose.

    • The defense will need to carry this team through the first part of the season until the offense can find it’s identity with a new QB. But most important is avoiding turnovers

  3. The wolfman is jealous of the relationship between Collin and Lane so he conjures up a
    Conspiracy theory

  4. Cowherd knows that everyone knows: Wittek was hurt last Spring. Kessler played better last Spring, and has received the lion’s share of endorsements to hit the press. Wittek has to rein in his risk-taking (HE said it!). Browne will have to improve sharply from Spring to be in the competition, but he has exceptional ability and maturity, so who knows?

    • Wittek’s accuracy was terrible last season. May of been a product of nerves, time will tell

    • I think the concern with starting Browne so young is his lack of mobility…..it appears worse than Barkley’s. Wittek is big and mobile with an insanely strong arm, but he doesn’t throw the cleanest ball, and his decision making seems suspect (but he’s young enough to change that). I have never seen Cody throw except in HS highlight vids, but he seems like a great option for a developing offense behind a thin line.

As was mentoined earlier, your defense will have to win early early games while the offense limts turnovers……seems perfect for Kessler. Maybe halfway through the season, a more dynamic option will be chosen a la Stanford last season.

  5. Wolf,
Jealous Cowherd has the type of relationship you wish you could have with Kiffin..
