USC Morning Buzz

BROWNE.2Here’s more from USC freshman Max Browne on no longer being in the quarterback derby.

`I came here with the mindset of winning the job,’’ Browne said. “That was the goal. Things didn’t work out that way. It wasn’t a huge deal. It makes me more motivated every day.’’ Story link here

  1. I don’t understand the neccessity of “officially ruling out” Brownie. It’s not like we have Billy Kilmer and Sonny Jurgenson fighting it out for the starting spot here.
    Stop self-inflicting these wounds, Kiff!

    • Billy Kilmer? Sonny Jurgenson?……showing our age, are we, Violet?…..how about John Brodie? Fran Tarkenton? Bob Griese? Roman Gabriel?

      • Funny you ask, but lucky you, I do have an interesting football story.

I attended Fullerton Union High School with Hoby Brenner and Keith Van Horn. They played Defensive ends on the same team!

Anyway we all ended up going to USC (where I dated both briefly), but back to my story: back then, we had a Powder Puff football game where the girls dressed up in pads and the boys dressed up in drag (i don’t know if this is still done).

So the day of the game, it was all rainy and the equipment man did not want to give us the usual game jerseys (apparently they are very hard to get the mud out of) so he dug out some VERY old game jerseys. After the game, he took one look at our muddied up jerseys and says “just keep em” so we all ended up with a great souvenir.

Well, later that week we were going through some very old yearbooks, and we come across a picture of Richard Nixon in a group picture wearing an old style football jersey (Yes he played football at Fullerton High!)

Well we looked at that old picture and we closely inspected the photo and concluded that these were the same jerseys that the equipment manager had given us (they were very distintive). And Nixon was wearing my number (66)!. So I jokingly said, told my friends that I had Nixon’s jersey. Well I had just tossed the thing in my PE locker when I changed, so we ran over there to inspect the jersey. Well there with plenty of witnesses surrounding us we are looking closely at the jersey when my friend gasps: on the tag of the jersey are very faded hand written initials: RMN.

To this day people ask me about Nixon’s jersey which I still have! Still muddy, cause I didn’t want to risk washing out the initials!
        So yes, I played football.

        • that is a very interesting story, Violet!! sounds like you are potentially Cadre Material!!

don’t listen to Jezro, he is still cranky about his life’s work being debunked here on the blog….now THAT’S a long story!

        • I enjoyed the story, though I would have worried that keeping a Nixon relic in my house might invite trouble from evil spirits, like keeping a voodoo doll souvenir from Haiti.

  2. Browne you have plenty of time.. trust it will be your team soon enough.. patience and get your weight up skinny
