Does Max Wittek Deserve A Half?

Does it send a wrong message if Max Wittek doesn’t play at least a half Saturday? The reasoning behind such a question is that many thought he was the better of the two quarterbacks against Hawaii.

With Cody Kessler starting, Lane Kiffin might just go as long as possible with Kessler, especially if he plays well. That would not bode well for the idea that “competition” determines playing time.

“Lane Kiffin might just go as long as possible with Kessler, especially
if he plays well. That would not bode well for the idea that ‘competition’ determines playing time.”

But if Kiffin kept Kessler in BECAUSE Kessler was playing well, that would seem to be at least partly merit-based, right?

  • Brian

Hey Wolfie…do some real work and find out if Breslin or Redd are playing.

  • B.Miller

WHO CARES WOLF.. Move on dude! You have a starter, just be happy with that!

  • TrojanFamily

So when Kiffin sticks with Wittek, he is a terrible coach because Kessler is performing better.

And Kiffin goes with Kessler, he is a terrible coach because he is not honoring “competition” by letting Wittek play a half.

I know you believe it is your job to be critical (and yes, good journalists ask the tough questions), but at some point, shouldn’t you make an argument and stick with it?

    • Helen

TrojanFamily: you summed it up pretty well. But let’s not forget Scottie has been lobbying for a month that Kiffin can’t name a full-time starter and how bad that was for the offense, and now is lobbying for equal time for Wittek. You can’t have it both ways Wolfie.

It looks like the job is Kessler’s to loose so if he doesn’t perform well then we’ll see Wittek. Personally I’d just like to see one of these guys step up and play better so we can move on.

What will it take for Wolf to say Kiffin did something right?

    • Independent_George

When he actually does something right.

      • L’Angelo Misterioso

        No kidding

        • Golden Trojan

Really, won 66% of his games with severe sanctions, no off field issues with players, keeps the media focused on him and not his players, carefully manages a QB competition that was a dead heat, has a defense that had the most sacks of any team last week. Kiffin’s a work in progress but give the guy a break.

    • Stu Azole

Well, he married up, and I think Wolfie has noted this.

  • CardinalnGold

Hey Wolfie, Teammates compete in PRACTICE to determine playing time during the game. Most credible witnesses say Kessler won that competition. Games are for competing against the OPPONENT. I know, I know, it’s a hard concept to grasp but It would be great if you tried to keep up a little.

    • Stu Azole

your argument might hold water if Lane could actually name his QB, but he can’t or won’t. Scooter is right on this one, and he’s not the only journalist harping on it.

      • CardinalnGold

Scooter is not harping about Lane not naming the QB (in this post). He’s complaining that Wittek might not get a full half of playing time. First he wanted Lane to pick 1 QB, and now he wants both to get equal playing time.

        • Stu Azole

he’s suggesting Lane’s continued fumbling of the QB matter is a joke, which it is. They’re either getting tested equally or one’s already the QB. Lane’s apparently not aware of this.

          • TrojanFamily

no, Cardinal is right. You just like to see Wolf criticize Kiffin that you don’t bother reading the content of the criticism. Kiffin should name a starter. But Wolf here is criticizing the possibility that Wittek may not get a half….he’s trying to set up something to write about next week. It’s bogus, and non-trolls recognize it.

          • Stu Azole

If he’s still feeling them out, they should each get the same opportunity. Otherwise it’s not a real ters, it’s just lane playing games

      • steveg

Journalists always harp on something. It doesn’t really matter who is starting, some will question why not the other one. Why they let journalists vote for a poll proves my point.

If we are going to compare apples to oranges:

This was Kessler’s first game in three years while it was Witteks third game plus.

Wittek got to go against a worn out Hawaii defense in the second half. Hawaii had 4 ints that kept their defense on the field. Wittek should have had a pick 6 for Hawaii on one of his bubble passes. and badly under threw a wide open Agohar that should have been an easy t/d.

Both qbs need to step it up but Kessler showed some good flashes. He marched the team smartly the first two drives. Lee dropped a perfect pass inside the 10 on 4th down and on the second drive a block was missed on 2nd and goal and USC settles for a field goal. Should be 14-0 USC midway through the first quarter and the rout is on. Kessler threw a perfect t/d pass in the second quarter and led a nice two minute drive at the half that led to a field goal.

I thought Kessler showed some nice mobility rolling out and throwing on the run.

    Max deserves nada.

It all comes down to Kiffin is SC coach and has a hot wife. Scotty has Bucket and a 1 bedroom apartment.

  • USConqueror1

U gotta give the ball to Max W. and let him helm the game. He is the better QB.

    • socaldude

I just want the best qb to play. Wittek has has 2.5 starts and really has shown nothing. He was pure garbage in the bowl game and got 10 points in the second half at Hawaii against a worn out Rainbow defense.

He is a pitching machine, one speed.

      • USConqueror1

But your already forgetting his performance against the #1 ranked ND team. He threw for almost 200 yrds and they barely beat us. Hes just gotta work on his interceptions, but hes already looking better there this season.

  • sureshot32

Wittek looked like a deer in the headlights. If he’s the best we have, we’re in for a really long season.
Kessler didn’t play as well as I’d hoped he would, but he did enough to give me hope. If Kiffin would stop being so afraid of losing and coach to win ball games, I think Kessler would have done better. It was concerning that he had so many balls batted down, but since the defense knew SC wasn’t going to throw deep, Hawaii’s D-line just sat back and did a “JJ Watt” when Kessler was going to throw.
I know we’ve talked about bubble screens ad noseum here, but I’m getting really sick and tired of watching Kiffin stretch the field horizontally and not vertically. Kiffin is his own worst enemy.

  • USConqueror1

Seriously scott? You are really asking this question? Wittek is a stud compared to Kess. He needs to play the whole game or at least most of the game to build his confirdence. Kess hasnt shown much at all. Let Wittek beat up on wazzus.
