USC Crowd Reaction

I was asked by Petros Papadakis if I could recall the crowd turning on a coach like it did Saturday night at the Coliseum? Other observers said they could not recall. So my question is, can anyone here recall something that angry directed at the USC football coach?

  1. 1976 vs Missouri. Team was booed of the field at halftime, most wanted Robinson fired.

Name any Tollner game late in his tenure, probably Smith as well, Hackett too.

  2. I went to a lot of Hackett games. People voted with their feet, the Coliseum would be two-thirds empty. But even in the depths of the Paul Hackett era we completed passes for more than 8 yards, so no one really booed, they just didn’t bother.

    • Yeah, he could put points on the board, even in the 3rd quarter, which Kiffin can’t seem to be able to do, unless you think 68 points in his last fifteen 3rd quarters as a lot.

    • “the Coliseum would be two-thirds empty”….

I went to games during the Hackett era, I know exactly what you are talking about. They had ticket prices down to $10 just to get people in there, pathetic!

If this downward spiral continues two-thirds empty is around the corner

      • Remember they even put a net up by the tunnel so fans couldn’t bombard Hackett with trash and bottles.

        • No, I live in Vegas and had a prior commitment on Sunday morning. Definitely a game I didn’t mind missing

          • Crappy North Las Vegas, to be precise. And, no, serving the public as assistant manager for a lemon-selling used car dealership isn’t the same as having your “own business.”

          • You need to ask for your $29.95 back, you got some bogus info. Sounds like someone put it in your a$$….haha!

…..and by the way, I’m retired!

    • Didn’t everyone leave at halftime of that Arizona game in 2000 when we were down 30 points at halftime at home?

  3. Lost in all the fun of Lane’s painful death is that the blame for this mess falls on Pete, yet nobody at SC will admit it. Lane was NEVER intended to be the next great coach – his job was to get SC though the pain. He’s failed, but he was in over his head to begin with. Not surprising, I guess, since Trogies aren’t very bright.

    • Really? It’s Coach Carroll’s fault? I seem to remember Mike Garrett making the decision to hire Kiffin. Maybe it’s you who isn’t very bright.

      • If you think Little Petey didn’t know all about Reggie Douchbag’s transgressions, I have some beach front property in Barstow I’d be happy to sell you. I mean, didn’t Reggie park his tricked-out Chevy (the accessories alone must have cost at least the price of 2013 320 BMW) if front of H. Hall daily. Petey never noticed uh? Carrol is definitely the root of SUC’s problems.

          • If you’re going to call “scoreboard” you have to have more points (or in this case national championships) than your opponent. How many national championships has UCLA won in football? One? When was that? When Eisenhower was in office?

          • 1954….1/2 a title

I loved the leather helmets they wore. Bucket even wore one while sitting in the stands

          • So did his wife. Wow. What a snout she had. She’d squeal every down, then go down. She loved to ham it up.

          • I don’t get SC fans devaluing our National Championships in 1939, 1974, 1978 and 2003 by saying they are only worth 1/2.

          • UCLA and Ohio State split the national championship since UCLA was ranked #1 by the UPI Coaches’ Poll and Ohio State was ranked #1 by the AP Poll.

          • Yes we did share a nation title in 1954. Help me out here will ya snarf. In what years did SUC win a BB national championship?

          • Go troll a ruin site if you are looking for support. Better yet, bucket has a drawer full of stale jockstraps….ouch!

          • scuse me…..I thought you were talking Wooden/Gilbert? BTW….UCLA doesn’t recognize MYTHICAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.
            fit UN torgan!

          • USC doesn’t recognize women’s softball

Which would actually puts you in third place!….ouch!!!

Your boy’s need to pick up the slack

          • USC doesn’t recognize women’s softball. Which would actually puts you in third place!….ouch!!!

Your boy’s need to pick up the slack

PS…. you just put your dic in your mouth. Smile when the flavor changes

          • I doubt Sam Gilbert rudely parked in front of Pauley Pavilion and openly handed out the Benjamin’s. Wooden won ten National Championships. Correct me if I’m wrong, but UCLA never had to forfeit any titles ( Ok, one in women’s softball). SUC on the other hand, forfeited a voted football NC title and returned a Heisman Trophy. SUC, America’s Balkan outpost, does get to keep its Water Polo hardware though. Swim on Joey.

          • Of course they didn’t. That because of all the chicken $h!t players that waited 30 years to admit it. Woodie was FILTHY

          • UCLA had to forfeit/vacate all their victories in 1977 under CFB HOF (??) coach Terry Donawho. Never heard a Bruin fan call him a cheater.

        • First, it was a Chevy.
Second, any fool with a pulse could get a loan back in 2005. Maybe you forget how easy credit was back then, let a lone a future “number 1” NFL draft pick.

Third, the school had nothing to do with Reggie’s transgressions. Any error by USC was an error of omission, not an error of commission.

          • See, you’re still not willing to blame Pete. And I saw what you did earlier, changing the discussion from Nattys to football Nattys. It’s understandable. Fight’s GONE!

          • Whatever you say snarf. I won’t argue with a halfwit. Little Petey POM-POM is up in Seattle and SUC got stuck with the Goat. Enjoy the 2013 football season.

    • That Freedom game is my favorite SUC loss ( along with any Little Petey POM-POM loss). Fresno State just ran over/through SUC’s defense like a hot knife through butter. It was power football, perfectly executed against a typical overrated, loud mouth, half-assed SUC team. Thank for reminding me.

      • My favorite Fucla string of victories was the two years they won 20 in a ROW and still couldn’t win the national championship. Hahahahaha

        • Remember the hurricane make-up game against Miami? Pucla’s defense made Edgerrin James look like a Heisman finalist! Lee Corso described their defense as “porous” and said they should get off the surfboards and hit the weight room! Just missed the very first BCS Championship game with that loss.

  4. I remember in November of 2000 against WASU no less and the stadium half empty. Hackett got booed mercilessly after calling a timeout on 4th down, when they were going to punt and then getting a penality for too many men on the field after the timeout.

  5. Tollner, Hackett & Smith were inept & incompetent as coaches but they were not arrogant and I feel were men of decent character and integrity. My dad got his MS at USC in 1928. I got my Ph.D. in 1970 and tutored for John McKay. One cannot attribute any redeeming values to LK and there is no point in belaboring his arrogance and total lack of character. Let me just say that nowhere in the annals of USC football has a coach done so little with so much. Pat Hayden who is a man of integrity is mistaken in not firing LK now if for no other reason than LK’s lack of Character. Letting him continue to destroy such a nobel program is much like cutting yours dogs tail off one inch at a time believing it will not hurt as much.

    • Kiffin probably knows he’s in over his head and hides his insecurity behind the persona.

      • My goof on the spelling, sorry, I lived in Hayden, Colorado for years. I am curious about your back up for attack on Pat Haden.

        • Real simple: Name one sport that is better since he became AD. I’ll help you…..None. All the teams that have been winning were doing the same under Mike G. Pat needs to get in the trenches and work instead of pumping hands and getting in goofy broadway productions with the drama dept. He’s getting paid $2M a year. He should be doing something other than killing SC Athletics.

  6. It was equally bad (with far less people) for Hackett. His last year against Arizona was one I remember vividly.

  7. I’ve attended USC games for over 50 years. I dont ever remember fans booing a coach as heavily as he left the field. Hackett was a bad coach here. However as one poster mention fans would just not show up during his stint. Todays fans are a bit more vocal and direct.

    • Because Slow Lane is easy to hate. He just shrugs off the problems of the program as if GroundHog Day won’t repeat itself when he wakes up. At least Hackett talked about returning to glory and took it seriously.

  8. I was a grad student at SC from 1988 to 1990 and never saw crowds boo Larry Smith. They’re may have been some booing when we tied UCLA in 1989.

    • I remember booing Smith’s decisions to keep Marinovich in games longer than he should…and cheering for Foley! Foley! Foley! Forgotten about that until the ESPN documentary about him and his troubles with abuse.

  9. TEN (10) posts on this single thread by Nubsie’s Lap Dog (aka Mr. 3,000). Looks like the AZZZZZ Clown is well on his way to 4,000!
    fit UN torgan!

    • I’m in your head…haha!

By the way, it’s 8 posts, learn to count

That Dementia is some nasty stuff

  10. Ted Tollner – his last game against the IRISH. Blew two 17 point leads in the 4th quarter. That was the last senior day that the seniors were introduced after the game. We booed Tollner and the players. BAD!

  11. When everybody in the Los Angeles area knew USC Basketball Coach Kevin O’Neil was in way over his head and should have been fired , Athletic Director Pat Haden insisted that he get another year. Well instead of making a change he let the program fall behind another year and continue to bleed, and guess what ? He fired O’Neil midway through the season. Now I doubt Haden will fire Lane Kiffin during the season but he did set the program back another year as far as recruiting goes, and it’s just another example of Haden not being qualified for the AD position . Brilliant Man but he’s not an AD….PERIOD !!!!!
