Spurrier Bans Writer From SC Stories
Back in 2011, South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier grew so upset with Ron Morris a columnist from The State that he refused to answer anyone’s questions at a press conference as long as
Morris was in the room.
The feud has only escalated in the two years since then. Spurrier blasted Morris on his coach’s radio show last fall. Now,
Morris is apparently prohibited by his employer from writing about the
Gamecocks football team. At all.
“The publisher of the paper has removed Ron from any coverage of the football
program, which down there is akin to the Washington Post not letting Dan Balz
write about government,” a former colleague of Morris’ told Jim Romenesko on Wednesday. “Effectively, he’s being
forced out at the behest of the football coach, with the publisher not standing
up for him.”
This isn’t a good look for The State and shows just how powerful Spurrier is in the
Palmetto State.
Moral of the story? Tread lightly if you’re reporting on Spurrier and his team, lest
you draw the Head Ball Coach’s merciless wrath.
