Can USC’s 2013 Defense Match 2008?

CUSHUSC safety Dion Bailey thinks this year’s Trojans have a chance. USC is ranked No. 2 nationally in rushing defense (43.7 yards per game), No. 3 in sacks (4.0) and No. 4 in total defense (212.3).

The 2008 defense finished No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense, No. 2 in total defense and No. 2 in pass defense.

“It’s a lot different now,” Bailey said. “We play spread offenses. They played pro-style teams. We’d probably get more respect  than they did.”

  1. so after playing two inept teams and one scatter armed, wild eyed QB (who beat you), young man thinks Southern Cal is the Steel Curtain???

this is more outrageous than Shaq Evans’ comments!! yeah, you deserve more respect, kid!!

    • He’s saying that IF they did match the 08′ team they’d get more respect because of all of the spread offenses they have to face. They’ve been playing 2nd tier competition but it’s still pretty obvious that their defense is legit.

    • Did you not see USC bladt Penn State in the Rosebowl! 38-24, it wasn’t even that close. USC cruised most of the 3rd and 4th qte with the 2nd , 3rd stringerss playing!

      • Can’t blame him for forgetting about a January game played at the Rose Bowl. The bRuins lease always ends in November.

      • Bill is pretty optimistic about USC (although he has yet to learn that a dictionary and/or spell check is his friend). I think USC would take 17 points and 220 yard against each. Thanks Bill, you are convincing me USC might have a dominant defense!

  2. Yeah it’s a little early to talk up the defense. Let’s see in a month what happens. It is amazing what a new coach can do with the same players.

    • while its not safe to say that USC’s D is great yet, Clancy has definitely had an immediate impact for the better on the defense.

    • If we luck out on the injury bug they could carry the team. The depth issue becomes huge later in the season when the harder games come up.

  3. Looks like the consensus of the local crack heads from jucla is that they won’t match 2008. Hang on guys, may be a whole lot of crow to eat. These guys on defense are deadly serious and very very talented and now they have the ability to use all their talent with Pendergast.

  4. 2008 D Held Oregon to 10 Points and shut them out in the 2nd half. Most amazing 2008 Regular Season Stats: a) 8 Second Half Shutouts b) The other 4 games’ 2nd half scores were: A 2 Yard Drive after an INT Return (at Oregon State), a 15 Yard Drive after a Fumble (at Arizona), a last play TD at Stanford after Harbaugh called a Time Out to get in one final play, and a FG by Notre Dame who didn’t get their first 1st Down until the Final Play of the 3rd Quarter, finishing with 4 for the game……And this team was frickin #5 going into the Bowls. Biggest BCS Fraud of All Time matching Tebow against Oklahoma.

    • Don’t forget: 6 draft choices, 2 first rounders.

So, you’re saying that it may be too early to anoint this 2013 defense? 🙂

For Bailey, Kennard, and the older guys, it must feel so great, after being the labeled THE problem in 2012, and the weaker unit in 2011. So far so good.

  5. 2008 team was Pete’s most talented and could have been the best … except he had fat dumb Steve Suckisian calling the plays. That clown couldn’t even get a first down at OregonSt. Nice move Pete. Without Goatboy and Suckisian at OC , you win another 4 national titles.
