The Genius/Problem Of Scholarship Reductions

NCAA Football: Sun Bowl-Southern California vs Georgia TechA part of me really thinks that no matter what USC’s record is this season, Pat Haden can say scholarship reductions explain away everything. Lane Kiffin said last night he cannot go uptempo because of defensive depth issues and a shortage of receivers.

It’s the universal excuse. No offense?Scholarship reductions. Give up a TD on special team? Scholarship reductions. Defensive issues? Scholarship reductions.

Never mind Georgia’s 69 scholarships last year or Penn State’s 67 this season. You should be grateful things are going as good as they are because of them.

  1. “You should be grateful things are going as good as they are because of them.”

Wolf, where you learn to write so good?

  2. Bitter SUC Wolfie-bashers? Nah, Fig Tech just spins out dopes who’d rather shoot the messenger.

  3. As much as I disliked Carroll as a person, he was a great coach, and would NEVER have used sanctions as an excuse for losing. Also, check out the Denny’s Menu photo above–there is a lot of blank space on that puppy. Just like Kiffin’s cranium.

    • Spot on! The guey is a dummy but Haidin and the rest of the trOJan desicion making fools are even dumber so theyll wait and wait until SCum’s program is in complete ruins. They dont have no guts to pull the trigger. Thats the beuaty of the situation.

      • It’s pretty sad when someone doesn’t have anything more to do than trash another team on that team’s blog. My son went to SC, and I am certainly of fan, regardless of the current problems with the team. I would never in a million years go to a UCLA blog, and start trashing that team. I even acknowledge that the Bruins are doing great, and are very well coached.

        • Oh plaes spare us the self richeousness. I endured plenty of abuse from trOJans during the carole era. Now its our turn to dish it.

          • you think he does it on purpose? hey, shouldn’t you be getting back to Scotland Yard?

Bru-Rick is not me. he is his OWN MAN!! and believe me when i tell you, he is ALL MAN!!!

not even Jezro the Jesse Ventura of the PAC 12, thinks i am BR!!

  4. I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to understand if you run an uptempo game then you put additional physical stress on your athletes and if you don’t have depth then they will eventually run out of steam. Now nobody is going to confuse Scottie for a rocket scientist, but how confused can this kid be?

    • The past two out of three years, SC has had higher-ranked recruiting classes than UCLA. You guys are always bragging about “higher average stars per player,: etc. Yet, SC, running a “slow-down-so-we-don’t-wear-out-our-thin-roster” offense, is ranked #107 in the nation in third-down conversions (27%), while UCLA is ranked #1 at 68%. What’s the excuse for Kiffin on that one?

      • I never suggested the USC offense doesn’t suck, it does. But changing to an uptempo strategy is not the answer as Wolfman suggests.

I guess you didn’t do well in math – having a “higher average stars per player” doesn’t result in more players.

        • He doesn’t say it is “the answer”, he says it would help to be able to switch into it like Alabama did after it fell behind 14-0 at Texas A&M last week.

    • How confused can Urban Meyer be for running an up tempo offfense last season to lead scholarship reduced Ohio State to an undefeated season? Image the additional physical stress Meyer put on the Buckeyes! No wonder they ran out of steam oh wait… another fail by Helen The Kiffy Lover.

  5. Scholie reductions matter most during shootouts and grind it out games. It would matter against Oregon because the defense is gassed. It could matter against Stanford because the offense doesn’t have the energy to mount a scoring drive.

There is NO EXCUSE for the perfomance the past four games, however.

  6. Scottie: instead of whining, why don’t you do some reporting and find out what happened to Martinez? Walker seemed to loose his job at LT only to mysteriously show up as a starter at RG – where in the world is John Martinez?

    • Out of favor w/ the head coach because he’d rather impress next years’ recruits than play a better player.
Kiffin strategy = Obama’s foreign policy. Kill the Host.

    • Helen, just for the record, the Goat won’t tolerate or answer logical football questions from any journalist except a Kiffy Goat appointee ( i.e. usually some SUC freshman PR twit.). Until Kiffy faces real a press conf. and answers questions truthfully, expect rampant speculation instead of actual fact. SUC’s team problems are all about the Goat’s behavior and his football IQ.

  7. More scholies = more lottery tickets. You never know which kids will pan out. The next 5-star Whitney Lewis? Or the next 3-star Shawn Cody. We’ve been down 10 lottery tickets a year, and it hurts.

    • Shaun Cody was a five star recruit. The Carroll landed him, it was seen as the tunring point for USC when is comes to recruiting,

And Whitney Lewis was the top receiver in Spring before he flunked out.

      • Nope – Lewis stuck around – you knew it would be a running play whenever he was on the field. Agreed Cody was huge, but he was not a 5-star recruit according to the 2 primary services. Turned out to be incredible.

  8. Scott, why don;t you ask Kiffin about that, like how can Penn State with 67 scholies and a true frosh QB be 59th in number of plays and USC with the same number being 133th or so.

That said, it was really stupid of Kiffin to stress that during the conference call because now it is a topic of conversation, and because George went to the SEC Championship games with 72 scholies and Penn State may win 9 games with a true forsh QB and 67 scholies, comparions will be made and it will make Kiffin look even worse.

  9. Only 2 days since the last game and Scotty has already blogged double digits about his beloved Lane Kiffin!

Over under last week was 18 blogs. He actually barely went under.

This week, likely from his surge of menopause, he’s off to a flying start. I put the over/under at 20 blogs about LK this week!

He really needs to change the name of the blog, too.

  10. PA St.? That’s the comparison? Let’s see a comparison – PA St. finished out at 8 – 4. Of those 8 victories 3 were on the road @ IA, IL & Purdue.

My point? PA St. has a great legacy but the Big 10, save OH St. is a hollowed out conference. PA St. recruits had a chance to transfer but few did – I’d venture if (and it was) offered to USC few would or did. Unlike USC PA St. has had little attention regardless of the horrific cover-up on ‘Joe Pa’s’ watch – it’s a legacy that is also the same at NE – time has come and gone – the skill of the Mountain West, Sunbelt and Conference USA are example of where recruits hail from.

Frankly Wolf you’re daily screed of vitriol you hurl at Kiffin is why I am glad the Daily News limits your reporting (Collins lead reporter) so that the rest of us can get a fairly objective report of how the game played out. Stick to what you seem to think is a career maker – keep sniping.

    • Comrade, you can get a real objective report on how the game played out by watching the game. If you watched the SUC/Utah St game then you know there is only one objective conclusion: pathetic game plan and offensive execution, and it won’t get any better this season. Objective enough, comrade.

  11. This just shows that most of you don’t understand the game of football, and how depth, tempo add to your teams physical output. This USC team is running with 50 scholarship players at best. 20+ scholarship players on the injured list. It makes a big difference when you are running with 4 wide receivers, and everyone wants a spread offense and up tempo. Yal complain about Kiffin, but who do yal think would of taken this job. 3 years with 10 less scholarships to offer, and no more than 75 players on sscholarship. Guess what guys it’s going to get worse the next two years when all these kids all graduate or leave for the NFL. thats how it works fellas, sactions are design to cripple a team year 5 and forward! Look how long it took Miami, and Alabama. Please don’t mention OSU, the big ten sucks! Fight On! Trolls!

  12. Scholarship Reductions ? Please give me a break , how many offensive lineman and Quarterbacks play in a game ? How many running backs does your average college football team use in a game ? and how many receivers do you use in a game ? You see where I’m going with this ? Unless USC has dozens of injuries, that excuse holds no water and is used to appease the average Fan that knows nothing about how a program is run. The only position that usually rotates many players is the defensive line, and the last I checked the Trojans are loaded at that position, so Pat Haden and Lane Kiffin can go try to insult some other Fans intelligence because it’s not going to work here.

    • Holy crap, Fred! Don’t you watch the games? Don’t you follow the injury list? Get a roster if you do watch the games. Watch the special teams with star upperclassmen and top recruits on them. Watch the constant shuffling of players on both sides of the ball during a game. And the biggest disadvantage with the 15/75 is the effect it has on practice. Don’t get me wrong though…my dream is to never again see Kiffin calling plays from field level and to never again see Wolf with a pencil or microphone.

  13. Kiffin isn’t even using all the scholarships available, he recently gave 4 to walk ons. One I can understand, two maybe but not 4.

    • Faux Bucket…..but i agree 100%. hopefully this is a joke. the coach raped boys for YEARS, the crimes were covered up by the school, and they did not get a five yr Death Penalty. the biggest disgrace in NCAA history.

  14. Maybe Kiffin doesn’t know how to go uptempo.. Maybe the inexperience is showing its ugly head!
