USC-Utah State Report Card

RESULT: USC 17, Utah State 14

RECORD: 3-1, 0-1

TEAM GPA: 2.4

QUARTERBACK

Cody Kessler under intense pass rush but also experienced four dropped passes. But still didn’t look like he is making much progress.

C-

RUNNING BACKS

The offensive line was a reason Tre Madden’s 100-yard streak ended.

B-

WIDE RECEIVERS

I don’t think Marqise Lee’s ankle explains his inconsistent performances. It’s the lack of consistency in playcalling and adjusting to a new quarterback.

C-

OFFENSIVE LINE

What happens when USC plays a good team?

D-

DEFENSIVE LINE

Morgan Breslin, Devon Kennard, George Uko and Leonard Williams are heart of the team.

A-

LINEBACKERS

Lamar Dawson (7 tackles) bounced back after quiet game against Boston College.

B+

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Could have been longer day if Aggies picked even more on Torin Harris.

C+

SPECIAL TEAMS

Another missed field goal and fumbled punt return. How long will we keep hearing from USC this is the best coached special teams unit in the country?

C-

COACHING

Good thing the passing game got “fixed” last week. Three passes after fake punt failed at 34-yard line also raised questions.

  1. As a alumnus of 43 years and a former Trojan athlete, I was torn on Saturday between wanting the Trojans to lose to hasten the demise of Kiffin or wanting them to kick butt. Amazing that we have reached this point with this team, I never thought it would come to this…

  2. good call on the coaching grade … D- to D+ whenever the players ( or refs ) overcome Goat and his motley worthless staff’s stupidity.
Automatic F when Goat loses … which will be plenty the next few weeks.

    • Are you kiding me. Kiffen deserves some more love. His defense alone should give him at least a B. The l is Lane stands for long term caoching stint. Sweetness!

  3. Look, I’ve told you why Lee’s not playing well and I said it before the season even started – his shoulder will take up to 10 weeks to heal. Bone bruises are VERY slow to heal. Why is a BRUIN the only one smart enough to point this out? Oh, and the other reason Lee’s not playing well is because he’s already counting the days until he’s out from under Lane’s dull thumb! LOSE ON!

  4. Kessler’s hand injury may have affected his 2nd half, definitely a step back from BC. Lee’s shoulder may make it tough for the behind the back catches. Poor play calling for sure. Could Lee and Agholor just go up and catch the ball and quit crying for a flag? Defense held a high scoring offense to 14, great effort by those guys.

  5. Injuries to Kessler and Lee got to have an effect in the 2nd half. Lee’s shoulder makes it hard for the over the back catches. But I wish Lee and Agholor would just go up for the ball and quit crying for a flag. Defense shut down a high scoring offense. Play calling is suspect after calling a good game last week. Kiffin is so inconsistent. Calling the plays makes it hard for him to get plays in fast enough, especially on the turnover.

    • Shaw for Stanford is still calling the plays and it hasn’t hurt them. A good coach can handle the play calling. The problem is that Kiffin is not a good coach or play caller.

  6. USC, as an Institution of Higher Learning, should know that IGNORANCE can be overcome through education… STUPIDITY is forever. Three “stumbling” wins and a really pitiful loss exemplify the “adage”, “Even a blind pig (aka LK) can find an occasional acorn in a grove of oak trees.”

  7. “Best Special Team” in the Pac-12!!! southern cal punter honored as the Pac-12 special team
    player of the week!
