USC Used 48 Players Against Utah State

071

With scholarship reductions a hot topic, it is interesting to note that USC used only 48 players against Utah State last weekend. If things are so dire, wouldn’t a five-star prospect like Zach Banner be needed for relief? He didn’t play.

Maybe he doesn’t deserve to. But we are being told a lack of bodies is holding the program hostage. Oh, and Utah State used only six more players than USC despite having 15 more scholarships.

      • Helen, despite the fact you are often discourteous to the wolfman, you have got some serious game!!

i am prepared to offer you Preferred Walk-On Cadre membership status.

you may have heard our female walk-ons are expected to also serve as escorts for Executive Council members, but usually they’re too drunk to really try anything.

  1. Scottie: you finally said something correctly – Zach Banner doesn’t deserve to play and therefore putting him in sends the wrong message and potentially injures the QB.

A lack of bodies hurts more in practice and less in games – 48 players is essentially the 1st and 2nd string players so I wouldn’t expect more than this to get in the game even without scholarship reductions.

  2. Instead of asking these questions rhetorically, why not ask someone at USC and report their answers?

  3. an argument can be made that 85 scholarships creates the ability to have a pipeline of seasoned players. most players are not ready to play at top college level immediately. they need bulked up, weight training, and a year of learning the plays. Wisconsin has been team chock full of 3 star players who were redshirted and their system produces a competitive team. most teams are learning to just wear down usc they can win (so no 3rd Q scoring?). the offensive line is very inconsistent which suppresses the talent of Lee, Agholor, Kessler, Madden, Allen, Davis. It is thin behind the first unit OL not in numbers but in experience. think of the Dodgers without a farm system and no ability to buy big name players. that said the coaching is a disappointment on offense because they need to shift to a shotgun or wildcat system that would work better with their talent (just like the defense did). how is it that every team seems to know what plays guru Kiffen is running? the opposition has Kiffen’s number.

    • Mostly agree; however, look at the Bruins. They have 85 players, but more than a dozen true freshmen are playing significant roles on the field: Eddie Vanderdoes, Kylie Fitts, Caleb Benenoch, S Jayon Brown, DL Kenny Clark, P Sean Covington, WR Thomas Duarte, S Tahaan Goodman, LB Deon Hollins, LB Myles Jack, LB Cameron Judge, WR Jalen Ortiz, OL Alex Redmond, LB Isaako Savaiinaea, and CB Priest Willis.

You play your best players–true freshmen or otherwise.

  4. Anyone think that Kiffin is using the scholarship card only to get the NCAA’s attention?

Not saying he’s that smart, but if he’s doing it to try and stick it to the NCAA through the press, he and Haden are better off actually trying to get those scholarships back.

    • No. He can’t come up with a complex game plan on the field so I won’t give him credit for one off of it.

I think it’s funny that Wolfie writes 15 consecutive posts about Scholarship Reductions and then calls it a “hot topic”. Only in your world Wolfie. Post about reductions if the NCAA decides to give some back to SC, otherwise I don’t care. I just want SC to beat ASU.

      • Additionally, have you heard Wolf’s questions in the press conference yesterday?

The guy gets hung up on certain things.

        Downright creepy.

  5. 48 players 8 good million players … what’s the difference ? Goat Kiffin is so dumb and such a loser he left Reggie Bush of the field with 3 national titles on the line.

  6. When you are sitting there holding your horrible camera taking videos..
How come you dont ask Kiffin these questions?
Your on the Blog asking us the question like we have the answer you need.

  7. Apparently none you have a clue! This other kids don’t play because they are not ready! Banner may have been. *5 recruit, but he hasn’t grasped the playbook or scheme to play against frontlne guys. Most of the backup have played in spots. What do you think would happen if they pkayed more and they are not ready? They would gey Kessler killed! Stop complaining and support the team! Fight On!

  8. Nice white gloves there, Kiff. Looks like you got them from the women’s half-yearly sale at Nordstrom. No wonder your players have lost respect for you.

  9. SC’s terrible offense and horrible third-down conversion rate are due to scholarship reductions. And so are all the injuries. And Kiffin’s white gloves.
