USC Morning Buzz

USC’s got a preliminary list of candidates but no clear favorite according to sources.

“We’ve got plenty of time to do (a search),” athletic director Pat Haden said. Full story here

The Trojans hold their first official practice today Wednesday under interim coach Ed Orgeron, who wants the players to have fun.

  1. Did Pete Carroll have any experience as a college head coach before coming to USC? No. Then why would Haden put so much focus on the issue? Is he doing that to avert the media attention on the guys like Del Rio?

    • Did Charlie Weiss have any experience as a college HC? For every Pete there’s at least one Tuna.

    • Because Pat Haden is not Mike Garret. Haden wants a college guy as it should be. Some coaches are a good fit for college others are a good fit for the NFL. Pete was great for awhile but seem to flame out the last couple seasons and then moved on. Mora may do the some at Fucla.

      • Sneaky Petey got tired of all the rules and stopped playing by the rules with the complete blessing of Mike Garrett! He was very outspoken about the rules! Mora has embraced the college game and like David Shaw has had enough of the pro game!

  2. Say Wolf…. Was I dreaming, or didn’t you post on this blog yesterday that USC should call Shaw from Stanford about filling the USC head coaching position right away?…..was it perhaps removed from this blog because someone thought that you were encouraging “tampering”?…….

    • He didn’t even attend practice when they were open to the public for the short stint — not his style.

Why make your own observations about the team when you can simply read other writer’s articles online? [sarcasm]

      • Yes, my tongue was firmly planted in cheek when I made that comment……Scottie is the King of copy and paste……and his new video toy is his latest attempt at “reporting”…..

    • You’re going to the game?

We can arrange a tailgate on campus in your honor!

Now, if you can accept my friend request on Facebook, we can make arrangements for you, ThaiMex, and all the other screen names of the “army” you describe.

  3. Start with Gruden and work your way down. And for ^&%$% sake, DO NOT HIRE JACK DEL RIO !!!!!!!!!!!!

          • I don’t think he needs to drink. He’s getting paid 3 mil until….when does his contract run out?

            Anyone?

I’ll drink the jack for him….before we play you guys at the Coliseum.

        • Here’s a SUC memory: Didn’t a SUC BB team go 3 and 27 in a recent season? I’m pretty sure that’s correct. Look it up Pauley. Nice pun uh?

          • Didn’t USC BB BEAT UCLA in Pauley earlier this year (last season)???… See what I did?….January 30th?…look it up, you schmuck…..

          • Golly, it’s the SUC Hearse. What was the score of last year UCLA -SUC football game? Come on, I know you know. You remember the crap “unfinished business” season miscarriage. Well if you don’t, look it up.

          • Ha!…. and you trolls accuse US of being “Yesterday U”????? …..If you want to ridicule the rallying cry of a good Christian person (Matt Barkley), from the safety and anonymity of your stupid screen name and behind your computer monitor, then go for it…..Unlike you, I don’t have to “look it up”…. your brain is obviously fried from abusing meth……Hate On!

  4. That’s not the list of candidates. That’s Scottie’s list. I can guarantee that none of the coaches mentioned in this article get the job.

JDR – He knows less about college football than Lane Kiffin.

Jeff Fisher – He has been a head coach in the NFL for 28 years straight.

James Franklin – Why is this guy even being mentioned? 6-7, 9-4, 3-2 (Same record as USC currently). This is the dumbest possibility that Wolfie has as his #1.

Chip Kelly – Are you kidding me Wolfie?? This guy is not going to be the next USC coach. Pat Haden is not hiring someone with past NCAA infractions…and an 18 month jail sentence that would overlap next year.

Chris Peterson – He is 3-2 this year, the same record as USC. Why does anyone think Chris Peterson is taking USC back to the national championship? That would be like Mark Few taking over North Carolina basketball. Just dumb.

Mike Riley – Why does Scottie keep pushing this agenda? Mike Riley is a .500 coach for his entire career in college. Does that sound like the next legendary coach at USC?

Here is the real list, it’s got one candidate:

Kevin Sumlin – He has connections for recruiting in Texas and the South. He has gone up against Saban, Miles and Brown in the recruiting battle and won. Give him California and USC’s resources, and we will see a powerhouse in 2 years. He is an offensive minded coach. He could bring in his coaching staff, or still have the choice to keep Pendergast and/or Orgeron.

    • Yeah, that’s a good list. I mean, A&M is in the SEC, ranked in the top 10, has a Heisman winner on board, has fans that live and die football, is in a state with no income tax, has boosters that’ll match any offer, and has another top recruiting class coming in already. Other than that, it’s a dead-end job for Sumlin, who’s likely headed to the NFL for his next gig anyway, so good luck!

      • Do you know Texas A&M Football history and USC Football history or do you look in a glass bubble of just today? Also, he gets $3.1 million, $6.5 million eliminates the no state tax argument. The NFL, lol. How did that work for Philadelphia and Chip Kelly? Why would any NFL team want Sumlin over Saban? Boosters that can match, comedy. Do you know the money at USC? We have a B club. B for billionaires.

    • My own has Jon Gruden as the dream coach and Sumlin as the likely one. Gruden’s NFL pedigree and legendary work ethic creates a buzz that would make USC a top 5 program (not team, program…the team is a long way away). But I think its unlikely he leaves the studio. Sumlin is a great college coach who could come to USC when they offer him Saban-like money. He would immediately have a recruiting impact in Texas and his success as a coach would make USC a immediate top player in Southern California again.

      • Completely agree. I would love Gruden, but I think he is too much of a reach. Sumlin is the obvious fit.

        • Can we evaluate how good Sumlin will be without Manziel. Kiffin was 10-2 with a good Barkley. A&M defenses have been average. What if Sumlin without Manziel parallels Whisenhunt without Warner.

          • You might be right. But at this point USC can’t wait to see him coach without Johnny Football. Texas and every other program (College and Pro) will be lining up at the end of this season. if Sumlin is the right bus, you don’t want to miss it.

    • He doesn’t have Sumlin because it would mean he agrees with Cowherd — and you know how Scott feels toward Cowherd.

What do you think of Wisenhunt?

      • I live in Arizona, and Wisenhunt was lucky to have Kurt Warner. He handled the QB position terribly after Kurt retired. Not a good choice.

        • I almost forgot who was behind Warner at AZ.

Just another example of how QB development can impact a career. Nobody saw Leinart becoming a bust.

      • I like the Whisenhunt idea from Colin. I’m just not sold on him being a great recruiter. He coached in college for one second. Also, since he won the SB, he digressed and couldn’t evaluate the next QB for AZ after Kurt Warner.

      • Wisenhunt may have found his niche as the OC for the Chargers. Their offense is much improved this season.

    • Hank: Here’s the big ?. What can SUC offer KS that he doesn’t have access too at A&M. Zero, Zilch, Nada. KS can use a SUC offer to enhance or upgrade his current contract with A&M. Thank you very much. Otherwise, KS is set at A&M. Why leave A&M for SUC, a program in decay.

      • Texas A&M’s last NC was in 1939. Apparently, they don’t have access to National Championships That’s one thing USC can offer Sumlin.

        • And of course $6-8 million annually, considerably more than he currently or could make at TAMU

  5. For all of the “it’s a blog so it doesn’t have to be accurate” arguments,” Wolf repeated the “information” about del Rio at LAX in this report.

He usually repeats his blog posts in his daily report, so it we expected.

So,what’s your argument now? He didn’t ven call it an unconfirmed twitter report. He just wrote “a twitter report” as though it was com a credible source.

Scott Wolf is the Lane Kiffin of beat reporters.

  6. Personally I would like to see what Coach Ed Orgeron can do with the rest of the season, because it really doesn’t take a Rocket Scientist to Coach a Football Team. He’s already one of the top recruiters in the Nation, and is a no nonsense type of Guy. Politics should not play a role in selecting the next Coach because decisions are never based on merit , it took UCLA 20 years to figure that one out. Coach O built that Ole Miss Team up but was fired before he could enjoy the fruits of his successful recruiting, and if he surrounds himself with the right assistant Coaches you never know what he could accomplish.

    • If Coach O turns things around he deserves consideration. He wants to be a HC and he’s a college guy. He’s got a great opportunity over the next 2 months.

    • It took UCLA about 12 years and SC about 20 before they stumbled into Carroll who ended up leaving SC this mess. The selection isn’t as easy as one would think or there would never be any down years. Look how long Alabama struggled with sanctions and bad coaches until they found Saban. I am sure Haden will take his time.

  7. After you guys come ouf of Fantasyland, Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, and Rick Neuheisel are the true short list!
