Dilemma For Current USC Coaching Staff

I’ve heard a USC assistant coach has already contacted some NFL teams about employment for next season. This illustrates one of the dilemmas from firing a coach in midseason. The coaching staff knows it is unlikely they will be retained and must coach while also look toward what they will be doing next year.

  1. Maintaining the status quo (keeping Kiffin) was not an option, Wolfie….even you would have to agree…..this is part of the price we have to pay for making this decision when we did….. I’m ok with it…….

    • Wolf would have fired Kiffin after the loss to Georgia Tech, as he has told us many times. But if Haden had done that, I suspect that Wolf would have criticized him for firing a coach who had finished the 2011 season (only one year prior!) with a 10-2 record, an AP top 10-ranked team, and a 50-0 win over the cross-town rival — all while under sanctions! Wolf would have been asking, “If Kiffin can be fired only 12 months after all those achievements, who will want to work for Haden and the ungrateful USC fanbase now?”

      • Exactly…

A few weeks ago, Wolf was saying the scholarship reductions don’t matter. Look at his latest posts on the scholarships.

At least Cowheard has a segment “where Simon was wrong…”

        • Ha, I often hear that segment on my way to work (Monday mornings, I think?). As much as people bash Cowherd, he’s capable of at least a little self-criticism here and there.

          • Yup…. and when was the last time that Wolfie admitted he was wrong about anything?…..Louisville, anyone?….

      • Scottie would have fired Pete Carroll after finishing 6-6 his first year and ending with a loss in the Las Vegas Bowl.

        • Kitten, if Little Petey Pom-Pom had been canned, your FB team wouldn’t suck this year, and there wouldn’t be any sanctions to blame SUC’s loser problems on.

  2. On an unrelated subject – It looks like UCLA will finally be on College GameDay this season after all……..this weekend…. up in OREGON!….. let’s see how well their fans travel…..strike up the USC haters in 3…..2……1……

    • Don’t worry about us too much Trojan Hearse. We will be just fine win or lose. Even if we lose, our coach will make it off the tarmac.

      • Back-to-back beat downs will be tough for the Guttie faithful to handle…you think 50-0 was bad? Saturday will be worse for the ruins.

        • Yeah, but it’s only 23 point spread?……And will the Ducks back off and put their 3rd stringers in t he game in the 2nd half if they have a big lead?…will Aliotti have another meltdown after the game if Hundley throws the ball too much at the end of the game?

          • Wow, PU was right about them ducks! OU fan trolls the SC blog to bash a UCWestwood fan. That’s some serious fan hood right there!

          • My daughter’s a Duck. It might be her! 50-0 worked out well for us…got rid of Neu. Just like that big loss at ASU allowed Tarmac Pat to take action. If we lose is the correct answer…even after the last 15 years, if we are still Bruin fans…we have to have optimism.

          • We leave her in Oregon where they don’t have to shave their legs, armpits and grow their own hemp.

          • Does that mean you’ll be going to Eugene on Saturday?

Definitely on my bucket (not the troll here..lol) list.

          • Already made that trip years ago. Used to get one trip per year on the team plane and my daughter wanted to check out the school, so I took her. We got pounded, the fans were out of control and they have just gotten worse. She decided to enroll and stayed after graduation. It is worth a trip but make sure to go when you guys are good again.

          • We don’t play them again until a LONGGG time I believe.

Are they that obnoxious? Most people say Cal fans are the worst in the Pac-12 toward the visitors.

The USC loss last year at the Coliseum seemed that way. Oregon fans were everywhere in the stadium and it got worse as they kept scoring with their behavior. I could only imagine a whole stadium of them.

Of course, none of them acted that way pregame on campus because they were far outnumbered.

Even when they went to the Rose Bowl 2 years ago, their fans were the same way when I went to Downtown Disney with my family.

          • 21-23 point spread. What is that? I remember a 41 point underdog a few years ago came into the Mausoleum and walked away with a victory. $h!t happens.

          • Wow…. since when did YOU join the Cadre?……another Putz bites the dust……Troll on….

          • Yeah. SUC loses to a 41 point dog at home. I think that was Little Petey Pom-Pom’s greatest game. Just think, he engineered a home loss to a 41 point dog. But, we could consider SUCs 13 – 9 loss to UCLA that knocked the SUCs from a shoo-in NC game invitation an even worse loss.

        • haha, “even worse than 50-0” is still better than losing to Wazzu at home! CLOWN ON!

      • Even IF you lose?……..with your depleted OL and LB situation?……I admire your optimism, Sir…..

        • says the guy who thinks SC will end the season with a record equal to the MIGHTY BRUINS? Laughable!

          • When did I ever say that, you liar?????…trying to undermine a complete strangers credibility??….. it’s easy for you to throw around BS like that on this blog WITHOUT ANY PROOF…. not even a shred…… if you can prove it, I would be more than happy to delete my account, you schmuck……

      • You mean like those two planes of fans that boarded the two planes for Miami back in 1998. The first one got off fine but that second Cessna well….
UCLA fans reminds one of Don Drysdale’s commenting during the final games of the season for the Angels back in the earl 80’s. The Angels were up in OAK. Drysdale asked Fairly “Ron how many fans you think are here tonight?” Fairly replied “I don’t know Don.” To which came Drysdale classic laser reply “Hmm let’s count em’…1-2-3…” Fairly “….4 – 5-6” Dysdale “… 7,8,9…..”

  3. So would you rather be fired at the end of the year and have a short time to find a job, or a few more months to look while still being employed? Seriously Wolf…

    • I don’t think that Scott is wrong that it wasn’t ideal for USC to fire Kiffin in mid-season. Very few important actions in life are ideal, and provide only benefits without any disadvantages. I don’t believe that Haden acted impulsively–or incorrectly.

As you say, of course the coaches are looking around and trying to solidify income for next year. Of course it will have some impact on their coaching this year. Again, you take the good with the bad.

  4. So Wolf, you “heard” all this information? Was it from your “sources”? Like the internet, other newspapers or TV?
What dilemma is there. Coaches come and go, it’s part of the job. You new to sports?

      • So what will YOU be doing when you’re 73 years old?……living off of your “entitlements”, no doubt?…BTW….Monte has only celebrated 18 birthdays in his lifetime, as he was born on February 29th !!!

    • Or like 30 to 40 hours a week to learn it well..College players have only 20- minus practice minus a full load of classes. NFL players live and breathed their careers.,,no comparison, CS

      • plus, we all know SC doesn’t really target the smart kids anyway. They all go to UCLA and Stanford!

        • You sure are brave behind a keyboard. Try saying that face to face with any SC player…and get your man card taken away…if you got one.

  5. I don’t see anything wrong with securing your future, Coaches are Husbands and Fathers first and every thing else is second. Who wants to be a sitting Duck ? That’s just the way the Coaching game is played.

  6. Not sure why this would be news.. EVERYONE knew Kiffin was gone by the end of the year.. they would be dumb not to look else where for work.
I dont see the issue here!

  7. Coaches that aren’t a head coach will always be after a higher rank no matter when. You are also telling me that these assistants wouldn’t be looking for other opportunities with a pending end of season dismissal. This blog is such FAIL, even I’m losing interest in this place. Plus Scotty still can’t lose his 1″ hard on for Lane…

  8. The coaches haven’t played a down this year and in some cases neither have the players *they were on the field but failed to make the play go… My guess would be a clean slate would not hurt as much as it sounds. About the only coach coaching to win is IHC O.

  9. It is called INTEGRITY..how would that look to the potential future employer? (that while a coach is still employed, he is looking somewhere else? He is gonna do the same thing when he becomes their employee)
