Tale Of Two Stadiums: Notre Dame v. USC

Photos/Lindsey Thiry

Here’s dueling photos of Notre Dame Stadium for USC-Notre Dame and the Coliseum last weekend each 20 minutes before kickoff. I’d hardly say it’s unusual because you could also go to Michigan, Penn State or Ohio State and find a similar scene 20 minutes to kickoff.

But at the Coliseum . . . never.

  1. You forgot to mention the game time differences WolfPutz. 7:30 pm in South Bend is very different than 1:00 pm in Los Angeles. Keep posting about crowd attendance though. It’s not like your job requires you to report team news and updates or anything…King of Fools

    • Maybe we should hire Nick Saban to scold our fans and shame them in staying for the entire game, like he did in Alabama……

    • “7:30pm in South Bend is very different than 1:00pm in Los Angeles.” Thanks for your sharing tedious SUC observation.

    • You’re right, 1PM is Los Angles in mid October is balmy. 7:30PM at night in mid October in South Bend is very cold and unpleasant. No excuse for our front-runner fans to abandon ship on the team when we have a rough patch. The fact that our attendance has dropped 30,000 is news, fool.

  2. Wolf, if you’re going to troll us like some Rust Belt bozo commenting on a ProFootballTalk thread, you should have added, “And thats why L.A. fans dont DESERV a NFL team!”

  3. Not much to do in South Bend compared to LA. Besides, why show up to hear those same 3 songs over and over again. Fight On For Old SC, Conquest and Tusk…only broken up by the National Anthem….and then repeated like shampoo. Wash, rinse and repeat.

      • Well, to be fair, they are Cal Berkeley Junior. And regarding Tusc, I can’t remember the last time I heard the band play that.

        • I remember in high school, our band would ALWAYS play a song from one of those brass infused groups from the 60’s and 70’s, such as Chicago (Make Me Smile), Ides of March (Vehicle) or Blood Sweat and Tears (Spinning Wheel or Lucretia MacEvil)….good times….

    • I wish they’d play Tusk. Or anything that might diversify their playlist. Austin Murphy, in Saturday Rules, pointed out that they played the Conquest march riff (they play it incessantly, and every second down) 87 times in a game at the Coliseum against Notre Dame.

A buddy of mine has UCLA season’s tickets with his uncle. His uncle won’t go to the USC game when they play at the Rose Bowl because the sogn drives him crazy.

      • That isn’t “Conquest” btw. That’s only played after touchdowns and after the game.

I think you’re talking about “Tribute to Troy”. It’s played anytime the opposing offense doesn’t gain more than 6 yards (or something close to that) and fails to make a first down.

It’s played over and over as a TAUNT to the opponent.

        • I stand corrected. Yes, Tribute to Troy. And I know it taunts them, but it also drives us fans nuts too!

          • “Fight On” can actually get more irritating to me because they play half the song.

    • Yeah sweetheart ‘but’, alas the so-called ‘fight song’ you trolls stole from CAL still has no lyrics! Why is that? Please tell us all – so ucla my sucla i.e. play the ‘female’ and then go hard core ‘blame’ the male.- USC or any entity that laughs at fairies

Here are some lyrics for you… (maestro if you would..)..

“That rotten golden bear… it yanked on my hair…it pulled so hard..across the yard it thought it sport that I cried foul…I am a gay bruin because Sanders said ‘baby blue is in’…what did we know we’re cast offs you know because we used to be LACC!”

      U Clowns Lost Again

You have no idea how elite and lib entitled you are – i.e. if USC traded campuses with ‘ucla my sucla’ NO ONE would go to UCLA … “Oh there’s too many that I fear that are ‘outside’….get me out of here…now!”

Godfather Part II – Cuppola (UCLA grad) didn’t choose ‘sucla vs. (fill in the blank) did he? No he chose USC vs. Notre Dame.

Your only bowl game that matters is beating us i.e. you’re no different than all the rest – your identity is defeating USC while USC’s is to be Troy!

      U Clowns Lost Again

U Clowns Lost A gain gain gain gain!

      • We actually do have another fight song…so now we have 2. The one we stole and a new one. You may get the chance to hear both on 11/30.

  4. Why in the world do you report on this crap? Do you think anyone really considers LA and South Bend similar? I am so tired of your all-out hate for anything to do with USC, football, Pat Haden. Your slanted and mis-guided opinions do not make a story, nor do they make fact. I am not reurning to this ridiculous blog unti you have something credible to report.

  5. Tailgate takes longer to pack up in So CAL. I used to drive my family nuts by getting into the stadium way early. That’s just because inside the stadium there were facilities that don’t exist around the stadium. I don’t think the stadium needs to be filled with band wagoners.

BTW the last two Dodger games I went to, there were still people pulling into the parking lot at the beginning of the third inning. The band wagon wasn’t empty yet.

  6. Apparently, Scott Wolf has never been to a sporting event in LA.

Dodger games are the most notorious for late arriving crowds. Laker games, especially 7:30 games on weeknights, also have late arriving crowds.

I do wonder if some of the late arriving crowds are because of the ability to take the train as well. I used to drive and get to the campus 3 hours early so I could park. Now I am far more likely to park at Universal, take the train, and arrive right about game-time. That is absolutely how I plan the day with a 1 pm start.

USC, like most LA sporting events, are “late arriving” crowds. UCLA home games at the Rose Bowl are typically when I like to term “non-arriving” crowds.

    • Our last crowd against Cal was over 84,000 people. I think that is about 20,000 more than the last SC game. That being said, we all agree that Wolf is a tool.

      • PU, would you please list the REAL accomplishments of ucla football for me?
Seriously, Mora, Hundley, et al have done nothing.

        • As of now, nothing great. Won the PAC12 south last year. Hundley slumping badly right now. We will see how the rest of the year pans out.

The program has improved from where it was under Neuheisel. You have never heard me say that we were going to be in the Rose Bowl this year or contend for a NC. Those are 2 things I want to see but clearly we have a ways to go. I am a realist.

          • Are you SERIOUS? You think the South is an accomplishment? God, what low expectations. Agree with your second paragraph, a LOOOOONNNNG way to go. (And that’s assuming Mora stays)

          • You do realize he agrees with you, right? Winning the South IS an accomplishment, but not a great one “hence the line, nothing great.” UCLA COULD become a football powerhouse but it definitely is not there yet. The real question is, do they capitalize (finally I might add–took them forever) on USC’s probation, or do they squander it.

Maybe I am in the minority but I’d like to see the rivalry take on a real meaning–that can only happen if UCLA can sustain football success. Then I want USC to beat the crap out of UCLA every year.

          • It is all about expectations. If a USC BB coach won the PAC12, he would probably get a contract extension. At UCLA, Ben Howland won the PAC12 last year and got fired.

          • Agreed. Although they did run Floyd out of town as fast as possible and sacrificed him quickly after the allegations with Mayo despite winning the Pac-10 tournament.

          • Sacrificed BB to try and save football. It backfired. Contrast that to how MIami handled things.Ended up being very costly.

          • you have to remember though, organizations engage in “learning.” Miami “learned” that the NCAA can be schmoozed into a light penalty (and learned from the USC case just how much they want to be).

          • Yeah, but Garrett was a tool in how he handled things. Whether or not you believe it, SC has a rep for being a bit arrogant. Garrett popping off about stuff and trying to play ignorant just made it worse. A lesson in how to do everything wrong.

          • no disagreement from me whatsoever. This is Garrett’s probation and in my eyes it is his legacy to the school.

          • He said “as of now, nothing great.” I know troxans are dumb, but come now – even you can read, right?

          • If you had ANY confidence in fucla football, you’d shut the f up and let the team do the talking. But they can’t so you clowns pop off

          • Let me put it in perspective. We had just concluded a decade of absolutely horrible football. The previous year we were blown out at Arizona and several of our players were involved in a fight on the field. Then we lose 50-0 to SC. Have to play in PAC12 Champ. Game and lose and then lose to a bad Illinois team in a meaningless bowl with a losing record. An embarrassing year.

Coming in to 2012 with a new coach, the expectations are pretty low. Nobody is expecting us to do anything and SC is the preseason #1 team in the country. So, based upon expectations, winning the South was an accomplishment last year for a program that had shown no life for 10 years.

          • If there wasn’t two divisions, you’d have been tied for 3rd. I mean, come on, it’s gets boring, having you hear you guys blow off about ucla football when there’s nothing to blow off about.

          • I was hardly Blow-ing off. I said that it was an accomplishment because we had low expectations..pretty much what you said. When you have been through what we have been through and the only bright spot was a 13-9 victory over your rival, then a few little bread crumbs is a 5 course meal.

          • Was I bragging about it? Or was I saying that if that is your only highlight, then things are pretty bad?

And how about some of the Trojans on here that think you can just hire a new coach, and BAM….you are back in the Pete Carroll era. How realistic is that?

          • I have to admit that 13-9 game was fun for me though, I had my favorite uncle with me who is a Trojan. He is still alive at 87. We had to park all the way up by the 210 freeway as someone else was using my parking pass. This is where all the Trojans were parking and we were walking through and I was hearing all sorts of talk coming at me.

Needless to say it was pure silence on the way back. It was a nice, satisfied feeling. I said nothing to anyone, just walked to my car. That memory is better than any t-shirt.

          • Not likely…I would never want to be Mrs. Blow and it is unlikely he would take my name. Besides, I think he might have one of those love/hate things going on with Bucket.

        • well, they beat SC. Now’s where you tell me that doesn’t matter because SC sucks. And then you realize “man, SC does suck, I wish I was a Bruin.”

          • You keep showing how ignorant you are. You think your program has “arrived” because you beat a SC program that is in a down cycle. Plus SC would NEVER compare itself to fucla football.

          • They sure did. Once since 2006. It matters too–whenever you lose to an inferior program, it stings.

      • Have to consider that fucla buses in thousands with free tickets to fill in the ends of the stadium. I know, I brought teams to the games for free.

        • Yes..that is true. But hardly 20,000 of them. It was the Cal game. I am sure there were a few Bears in there as well. The general point is that our attendance is up significantly this year. LA has a lot of fair weather fans which goes for both teams.

          • such is true–also though, the Cal and Stanford home game is their Weekender, right? Those games always draw well because of how well the students from the other school travel.

          • Yep. We play Washington on a Friday night at 6pm. That will be interesting. Getting to Pasadena on a Friday night at 6pm.

  7. Scott loves trolling. Look at how many comments he’s produced and I’m sure he’s got a creepy grin from it.

Why don’t you take a photo of the Staples Center a few minutes before a Laker PLAYOFF game? Even in the Finals, we’ve always had a late arriving crowd.

    • LOL, of course this is true yet the same guys keep coming back and screaming about Wolfie. Wolf is killing the click wars and his editors love him for it.

      • You Bruins don’t get it. USC football is about TRADITION. Taking shots at Wolf on his blog is a TRADITION that dates back AT LEAST as far as the second term of G.W. Bush.

      • I agree. Since he can’t sell papers, he can at least generate clicks on his webpage. Plus, he can rely on ChuckleBucket creating a dozen logins like this one to generate more revenue. Sure beats buying a paper, right Chuckles?

      • Click wars as in web TRAFFIC?

I’ve got news for you: this blog is way behind many PAID websites. That’s “killing” the click wars?

  8. nice CROTH KICK, wolfman!!!

not fair though comparing the Rudys to the new laughing stock of the NCAA, the trOXans!!!
helll, even Harry Reid, the LEADER of the SENATE wend out of his way to crotch kick the trOXans!!!
    meanwhile EVERYONE loves the RUDYS!!!!

heck, they have their OWN National TV Deal on a major Network, NO OTHER TEAM has that!! have to give the RUDYs props!!
the trOXans? maybe on the Versus Channel IF you’re lucky!!!

    • I agree. As a crotch kick, it was unfair and not terribly manly. You once again correctly identify a Wolf troll post. Good job!

    • Where have you been? Haven’t seen you since the beat down Whoregon laid on the bRuins!

      • Geez Louise!!! i have what’s called a LIFE!!!

i can’t be in here crotch kicking you Dummies 24/7, but i see you all can’t quit me!!!

by the way, props to the PIOUS PASSER, 4 turnovers in his first four POSSESSIONS!!!!

        Yeah, that’s an NFL RECORD!!!!

        Oh, MERCY NURSE!!!

        • The amount of time and effort you have dedicated to this place surely has given no indication that you have what’s called a life!!!

      • They found him wondering down the 405 wearing a soiled jockstrap. He was detained and placed on a 72 hour psychiatric hold. Dementia is some nasty stuff

    • 42-12…..embrace it! Two in a row, sounds like a streak to me

64 passing yards? I can’t recall Barkley ever stooping to that threshold

Shlt, I thought you might of given the 9mm a try, the offer still stands

  9. Maybe you should show a photo of what there is to do after each game ( a list would suffice).

  10. 20 minutes before kickoff? That’s for midwesterners with nothing else to do, no traffic to fight, and nowhere to go after the game.

  11. In the Carroll era I could not find anybody selling tickets at the coliseum on game day. L.A, is a tough sports town– win or you will be playing to a half-filled stadium

  12. Gees Wolf your story holds absolutely no merit! you can not be that DUMB!
You do realize USC is in the largest City in Cali? there is much more to do in LA than any of the cities in which the schools you mentioned are located?
Try putting the University of Michigan in Detroit.
Try putting Penn State in Pittsburgh
Try putting Ohio St in Cincinnati or Cleveland
Try putting Notre Dame in Indianapolis
