Texas A&M Coach Kevin Sumlin No. 1

SUMLINI’ve heard from sources that Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin currently tops USC’s wish list. It makes sense because Sumlin fits the bill in many ways. He has already been successful as a college coach, gets along with his players and has charisma.

And he is obviously a proponent of the spread offense……

    • TrojanFan

Would Browne transfer if Sumlin became the new coach?

      • Trojan Hoarse

Hopefully not…..sitting out another year wouldn’t be too smart, although QB friendly schools such as Oregon State and both the Washington schools would look pretty attractive, as well as being closer to home…..

        • gotroy22

Or he could go to a Division I-AA school, start immediately and get this NFL draft resume started.

          • Trojan Hoarse

That is also true…..just like Aaron Corp and Dillon Baxter…..

    • rusoviet

…and that makes Sumlin something we want to hire? Three schools in four years? Even Jim Harbaugh wasn’t that smooth.

Sumlin is a good coach but he isn’t Urban Meyer ‘but’ Brilies is.

  • jetman624

He may be at the top of the SC list, but I bet SC is not at the top of his. I bet he chooses Texas, if given the opportunity.

    • Trojan Hoarse

I agree….And I am sure that the new Texas AD, from ASU, would like to make a big splash……

  • Goatboy Kiffin

was the source his agent … with them playing Texas and SC , Sumlin is going to enjoy all the upcoming ‘losses without Johnny’ years quite well. His team’s play powderpuff defense. Oregon will put up Monte Kiffin type scores on SC with Sumlin … so will UCLA and Zona and ASU and Leach and …………

  • TrojanAlumnus

The more I read about Art Briles and see his Baylor team perform, the more viable a candidate he appears to be.

    • Go Tama

Sadly, he will NEVER leave Texas

For us Rah-Rah’s, reporter Garry Paskwietz, on WeAreSC, will be having his weekly online Q&A chat @ 2:00pm today……

      Thank you Garry P.

      • Trojan Hoarse

Hey, at least he knew that Ty Isaac is healthy enough to play this Saturday……

  • Beto Torrealba

One of Wolf’s “sources” is bound to be right one of these times, but this ain’t it.

  • Henry Bibby

Didn’t Pat Haden tell the world that NFL experience is a requirement? I don’t believe this for one minute.

    • TrojanFan

      What about the defensive issues?

  • B.Miller

Lets see how far down the list he is for USC..
I am not opposed to Sumlin
but does he fit the USC / LA mold?

  • Go Tama

Well, he fits one of Hadens criteria, can you guess which one ?

  • Joe Blow

fulca will pitch in. What a load of a choice.

  • rusoviet

Haden is big on what Kiffin was focused on – raising graduation rates – I have to wonder hiring a coach who would be at his 3rd school in a mere 4 years.

  • jetman624

Unfortunately, I think the “smart hire” will be taking a backseat to the “splashy hire”, for this administration.

  • steveg

Sumlin is up near the top of the list for Texas. So is Saban. I still like Gruden as #1, Sumlin my #2. Briles would need to have a Defensive Coordinator like Clancey to be viable in the PAC12. If Briles came and kept most of the USC staff, or Sumlin did to, they could be successful. Both are proven HC’s, can lead, motivate, and teach the players.

    • HeySucs

SUC fans just don’t get it. The guys you wish for are just that – a wish. Your interim HC is the best option at the moment, because he won’t bolt for a perceived, better opportunity. He is a SUC lifer. Ed will direct SUC’s FB program back on track by the time of his retirement. That way the University has time to select the right next generation SUC HC.

      • John Holmes

Sumlin will be the guy. The hilarious part is that one of his first hires will be Adrian Klemm.

        • Trojan Hoarse

Please don’t tease me…. Adrian Klemm is one of the best recruiters in the country…….that would be a MAJOR coup……

        • HeySucs

We’ll see, but I don’t think Sumlin is a good fit for LA glitz.

      • TrojanFan

Focus on the ruins. The season is starting to slip away for Mora and the girls

  • John Holmes

Why would Max Browne transfer if Sumlin was named coach? He coached Sam Bradford and Case Keenum. His offense doesn’t need a running QB. Just ignorant responses on here.

    • Trojan Hoarse

I was not suggesting that a running QB is required in Sumlin’s system…but unless our offensive line improves their pass protection greatly, a spread offense makes a little more sense, provided that Max Browne releases the ball a little more quickly than Kessler has, or else Browne will be taking a beating…..

  • Dr. Paul

USC does not need a “Revolving Door” coach who spends his time interviewing with NFL teams. The more I learn about our “top prospects” the better Coach O looks!

    • jetman624

Coach O LOVES this school. He isn’t the splashy hire, but I would really like to see him get a shot at the job. The players love and respect that man like he is their own father– probably more in some cases. He could be the under-the-radar home run.

  • CheattheSystem

Let’s get the previous Chadron State Coach!

  • john wolcott

Give me Johnny Football and I would win some games as his coach. A little like Wooden with Alcindor, Walton, and the like, and then being anointed a wizard. Right!

    • ThaiMex

Dildo….how many NATTY’s did Wooden win w/o Walton and Alcindor?
      fit Un!
