USC Morning Buzz

Mark J. Terrill/Associated Press

The USC coaching search took on a life of its own this week after the Trojans’ upset of Stanford thrust Ed Orgeron into the national spotlight, as my story in today’s paper points out. Excerpt:

“This is not a normal coaching search because a coach usually gets fired at the end of the season. But when (Lane) Kiffin got fired five games into the season, it gave (Ed) Orgeron an audition. He went from being a failure at Ole Miss to being the flavor of the month at USC.”

Yeah, but hold everything, Trojans Nation. Wait until we win the rest of the season out, including the bowl game. If we win out, then I’m sure we’ll see Coach O for many years in cardinal and gold. But for now, just hold that thought, because we’ll see about that soon enough.

    • Cheap seats

Many years? Many are speculating that if Coach O is hired, it will only be for a 5 year or shorter deal with USC having an option at 2 years.

  • Trojan Hoarse

Have you never failed at anything before, Scottie?…….are you suggesting that once a failure, always a failure?…….and I would say that this months flavor tastes pretty good, if you ask me….

    • Cheap seats

To Wolf, any choice outside of Mike Riley is a bad one.

      • Trojan Hoarse

And that’s because Riley is the only coach that will even speak with him…. or at least let him take a pregame video of him, while his team is on the field getting ready for the game…..

  • gotroy22

Welcome to the Trojan Family, Shay!

  • steveg

Kiffin doesn’t think it will work if Orgeron is not hired as HC and is kept on. Wrong! How can he speak for Ed who already said he would love to stay either way.

Gruden and Orgeron, incredible staff any young man would love to play for.

    • Golden Trojan

A lot of Egos to check at the door! But would love to see that work.

    • Trojan Hoarse

I’d love to throw in Norm Chow, while we’re at it……

  • Golden Trojan

Orgeron replaced Cutcliff at Miss, Cutcliff is doing well at Duke, Pete Carroll was a failure in the NFL before coming to SC, Pete’s got the best team in the NFL now, Andy Reid was a bum in Philly, now he’s turned KC into a winner, it’s about the right fit at the right time. Heck even Kiffin will find success somewhere sometime!

    • Cheap seats

I don’t think a “bum” would be capable of taking his team to the Super Bowl.

  • Helen

What? Helton is a candidate for head coach? Either Orgeron lost some weight or Haden is hugging the wrong person.

    • gotroy22

      Good observation!

  • one look at Hadden’s language and that tells the whole story. he says he will make a “rational” choice, implying that the campaign for Farmer Fran is solely based on EMOTION. also, he stresses that people won’t like his decision, which pretty much confirms he is not going to pick Farmer Fran because if he named him coach today, obviously there would be a huge celebration on campus, not the unhappy throngs Hadden predicts!!

any Bruin can see through this rhetoric, while the trOXans are like gullible schoolkids, unable to see what’s coming. Herh, Herh, Herh!

    • Trojan Hoarse

Do you see what’s coming on November 30th?

      • are you asking for my prediction?

        • Trojan Hoarse

Sure, why not?….. I could use a Friday morning laugh….

          • my prediction: Paaaaaaaaaaain!!!

you trOXans shoulda NEVER come back!!

          • Trojan Hoarse

So predictable…. and totally lame… and you’re welcome for the cumball!

          • TrojanFamily

The last time you predicted pain, USC beat Stanford. So, you are predicting a USC win over UCLA.
Good to see you on board. Welcome to the bandwagon.

    • Jack B

Hey Crotch Boy – any Little Gutty may be able to see through simple rhetoric, but ask them to tell you the difference between dribble and drivel and you’re doomed! Duh! I’m marooned with a bunch of
      Little Gutty idiots…

    • Cheap seats

If you’re going to continue to spend 99% of your life here, at least put your behind on the line.

You said Coach O would be .500 or less.
You said we’d lose to Oregon State.
You said we’d get BLOWN OUT by Stanford.

Put some skin in the game!

      • Trojan Hoarse

        At LEAST his foreskin……..

  • Weinst

All of these comments on Haden’s ability to choose a HC for football strike me as absurd. First off, the man is seriously bright. Second, he knows the locker room having played, and excelled, at USC. He knows the pro game and the differences between the pro and college games. He has been involved with USC for years, which means that he is well aware of the transformation that has occurred in the University. Finally, obviously, he cares for USC. I have not read a comment from anyone that appears to know as much about what is needed in a HC as Haden. Let him do his job.

    • WEB_Dupree

Are you questioning the collective wisdom of a bunch of anonymous guys commenting on an obscure blog? That’s playing with fire, pal. We are pretty sure that we are usually right about most stuff.

      • ProbationU

And on top of that, don’t forget about the collective wisdom of us Bruins fans wanting to make sure we get our 2 cents in!

  • WEB_Dupree

“USC’s coaching search took a life of its own this week,” Scott says in the full article.

    Who died?

    • WEB, wolfman’s post has no such typo. please read carefully before you cast stones.

ummmm….wait, did wolfman change the picture???

      • WEB_Dupree

Speaking of reading carefully, note how I specified “in the full article.” Follow Scott’s link and you’ll see for yourself.

        • You think your so smart.

          • Mike 70

any bum off the street is smarter than you…

          • even the crazy ones?

          • WEB_Dupree

            “your” was a joke, right?

          • glad you caught it….it was my homage to the people on here who correct others yet inadvertently include their own gaffes!! MOST of the time when a trOXan would correct me i would find these errors. so embarrassing!

i also set some traps by using obscure words to try to sucker a trOXan to attempt to correct me…surprisingly i got Lawyer John several times with that trick!!

          • WEB_Dupree

It is a strange, mystical rule of the Internet that you are most likely to make a typo while mocking someone else’s mistakes.

  • Fred Sampson

I’m not sure why People keep using Ed Orgeron stint at Ole Miss as a measuring stick to his Coaching ability…Really ? What top notch 5 star recruit would pick Ole Miss over USC ? The School a Coach is employed at makes a big difference in his success . Does anybody actually believe Pete Carroll would have won a National Championship in Mississippi ? I certainly hope not !! You will never see Championship type success at half the Schools in the SEC, Big 12, Pac 12 or ACC matter who’s Coaching those Teams !!!!!

    • Trojan Hoarse

And people also conveniently forget that, after a couple of very good recruiting classes, the cupboard was full for Houston Nutt to do some good things after Coach O was let gO………

    • peter

Ever see movie Blind Side? Michael Orr. Beside him I agree with most of what you say.

  • peter

If big O doesn’t win out and get the HC job it will become very interesting and complex for EO.kiffy as much as I hate to say ,is right. O can’t stay as a aas. coach, only possible would be with Gruden.Coach O is not flavor of month ,try legend. Now there will be other Head jobs offered ,this will be the hardest part. What job will be open that has talent, recruits, history, all the ingredients with any similarity to USC.? O could find himself in a new HC job at different school, in a no win situation, where after a few years of obscurity he finds himself in lesser bowl games.I hope he wins out big, gets the permanent job and goes on to victory. Otherwise this lovable coach is going to have very hard decisions.

  • B.Miller

Another Copy and Paste story about USC Coaching search.. Not any information we have not read about 40 times..

  • calexrose

its simple let orgeron hire the best oc in the country incorporate that offense with usc offense slowly over say 3 years. whether its lashlee from auburn or philip montgomery from baylor . pay them a good chunk of change a let orgeron deal with the leadership of the whole team.
