Chris Petersen Out, James Franklin No. 1

ESPN reported that Boise State coach Chris Petersen withdrew from the coaching search. That leaves James Franklin, who USC eyed since last summer, as the top choice. Steve Sarkisian’s also interviewed, according to reports. Wouldn’t that be an exciting prospect? Unveiling him after all those 7-win seasons.

  1. Is this the same James Franklin that went 11-13 in the SEC the last 3 years? Is this the same James Franklin that finished 4th in the SEC East the last 3 years? Guaranteed he is not the “top choice”.

    • listen, “Henry Bibby”, if the wolfman says Franklin’s the guy, then Franklin ISTHE GUY!!!

      quit yo’ jibber-jabber!!!

wolfman called this from DAY ONE!!! (and i predicted last night Peterson was a no go!!!)

    • Let’s not forget he’s at Vandy. Making it anything close to relevant is a real accomplishment.

      • I would say the same thing to you. Let’s not forget he’s at Vandy. What part of his resume shows he is ready to run a top 3 College Football Program? It’s Vandy for crying out loud.

          • Confirmed interviews with Jon Gruden and Lovie Smith. Those are the top 2. Also, Bill Cowher is waiting out there. How is no one else available?

          • Lots of people are available. Just not interested. If SC is a plum job, it’s a very old, moldy plum. UCLA owns LA! 35-14!

          • Same old, same old. USC plays for Rose Bowls and NC’s. UCLA plays for a win over USC. Sad, but true.

          • Yeah right Baldy. Who can forget the “Unfinished Business” NC season. From #1 to the incredible, never been done before, record of 7 – 6, and the amazing “there was no fight in the locker room” SUN Bowl humiliation. Who can forget Kiffy Goat in shades a sombrero. Same old, same old, this year SUC will be starring in the “Take a Dump” Bowl. SUC will lay claim to the title of National Guano Chumps. UCLA 35 – suc 14. suc: queen of LA.

          • If Wolf is the source for the Gruden interview then I don’t buy it. No other respectable media source has confirmed the Gruden interview

        • Fair point. But it’s not as if Vandy is some FCS school. He’s clearly turned it around with commitment, passion and recruiting. Seems like a smart guy who’s unlikely to get in over his head. I think he’s an intriguing option.

          • That would be nice for Washington State, but not for USC. Intriguing should not win the job. A resume that deserves $6,000,000 per year should win the job.

        • top 3? Since when? Better jobs than SC include Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, LSU and, of course, UCLA! BOOM! 35-14!

          • Gee whiz Baldy, I missed your posts following suc’s well designed debacle in the mausoleum to UCLA on 11/30. No hair, No Ba*ls. But you’re still mouthing off. Here kitty, kitty.

  2. Amen i.e. ‘excitement about having Sarkisian’ – not! If that is the choice Haden best get ready for a lot of donor anger – i.e. Sarkisian is ‘Kiffin light’

  3. Does this sound like the “top choice”?

If Vanderbilt’s James Franklin is on the cusp of becoming USC’s next football coach, Franklin’s current boss knows nothing about it.
Vanderbilt athletics director David Williams said Monday morning that he has not been contacted by anyone with USC or by Trace Armstrong, Franklin’s agent, regarding the job and that Franklin has never spoken to him about the position.
Williams added that he is under the assumption that Franklin has never interviewed for the USC job.
“All I’ve heard about James and USC has come from the media,” Williams said. “I have not been contacted by USC. James has not mentioned it. His agent, with whom I have a good relationship, has not mentioned it. I don’t know where all this comes from. We have no knowledge of it whatsoever.
“I have no reason to believe James has interviewed for the job. I know (USC AD) Pat (Haden) and Pat has not talked to me, has not asked permission. And Pat would do that, I assume. James has not mentioned it to me. His agent has not mentioned it to me. Based on those things, I would be very surprised if James has interviewed for that job – or any job for that matter.”

  4. Gruden would be great, but where is confirmation for interview. And love smith said he wasn’t interested and cowher not even on the radar.

    • We don’t know who is on the radar. Pat Haden could be talking to him right now. Wolfie confirmed that Jon Gruden was interviewed. Peter King said this morning on Dan Patrick that he is confident Jon Gruden will be coaching next year.

Show me where Lovie said he wasn’t interested.

        • Thanks. Not a big enough splash anyways. Although, when someone says “I’m not interested”, they get the job many times. See Nick Saban and Alabama. No one knows, all speculation, yet fun.

          • Yes, UCLA did have fun kicking suc like a empty tomato can down the road. SUC: the Tomato can University. BTW, who cares who SUC hires as HC. The program is a leaking ship in the middle of the PAC 12 ocean.

  5. Wolf… WRONG AGAIN! HA! You are never right with anything you write on this thing..
HA! I get better info from others on your site
