Chris Petersen-Steve Sarkisian Musical Chairs

Boise State coach Chris Petersen, who interviewed with USC on Sunday, is scheduled to speak to Washington on Friday. If Petersen agrees to take the job (finally!), how many Husky fans will be happier than they were last week? I’m guessing nearly all of them.

That doesn’t mean Sarkisian won’t do a good job at USC. He is personable and has a plan to be different than Lane Kiffin. It is ironic, however, that someone who went 4-5, 5-4, 5-4, 5-4 and 5-4 in the Pac-12 the past five years moves up to USC in this scenario.

I can almost see the steam coming out of Ed Orgeron’s ears as he see those records.

  1. The BSU sports info guy said this evening that Petersen was in Boise tonight and would be in his BSU football office tomorrow

  2. If true Wolf it is telling that Petersen wasn’t considered by Haden for the HC job even after the interview – Haden stated publicly he only offered the job to Sarkisian. May also be revealing of Petersen sensing the well has run dry at Boise in getting continuous group of talented players – his program truly was the sole one (after TCU left) that had even a modicum of skill in the Mountain West – time for move on – smart move for Petersen and a good move for WA.

    • The real question is…is Petersen up for the challenge of the Pac-12? No guarantees he could handle and successfully recruit the 4-5 star types you ultimately need to be elite outside of the MWC. If his plan would be to bring in a bunch of Boise St-types into Seattle (the guys he’s used to), that just might not work. Doubt it. USC could have had Petersen if they really wanted. Truth is, they backed off. Maybe it was a mistake. But regardless, Petersen is no sure thing as either a recruiter or a coach in Seattle, or the Pac-12.

        • Trojan fans in a serious state of denial, hey? It’s amazing that people don’t even remember back to the days before Pete at USC. Every program, be it in LA, Nor Cal or Washington, has their day – how long that day is, and often that day comes around, is largely influenced by staff, momentum and school support. Petersen in Seattle will be great – how great, I don’t know. But judging by the fans’ reaction in Seattle today, SC taking Sark is the best thing that could have happened to that program.

    • Maybe Petersen just really did not want to move to LA, be it as coach at ucla or SC.
Maybe his lifestyle is more attuned to the Pacific Northwet (sic).

      • Not everyone wants to belong to the Flock of SUC. Peterson has too much pride and integrity to join the SUC chump circus. He also insists that his players attend class and graduate. Not a big priority at SUC: UDub’s south campus.

    • I’d love to see it. Let the best coaches step up and win ALL their non-conference games against TOUGH opponents (unlike the SEC who plays cupcakes)

  3. Petersen was interviewed by USC and not chosen. I’m glad. The last thing I wanted was another stoic coach in charge.

    • Make mo mistake mikey, Petrrson took HIMSELF out of the running!!!

If he goes to WA, they’ll be dancing just as Bruins did when Mora extended contract.

When Sark was hired all the trOXans said “huh?”

      • Are you sure? After discussions both parties agreed it doesn’t work. Perhaps Haden let Peterson make the announcement. Just sayin

        • steveg, let’s be real. Schools have been trying for almost a decade now to lure Petersen out of Boise. UCLA included. You really think his “interview” was so poor that SC decided not to offer? The VERY likely story, as was the case with UCLA a few years ago, was that Petersen didn’t want the job, for whatever reason.

    • Ya lets get a big talking dufus loser and skip the proven winner … great rational

    • I heard a different story. Peterson refused to interview with SUC because of SUC’s unique cheating tradition.

  4. Haden will be in trouble if Peterson goes to Washington because USC fans will want to know why the Trojans couldn’t land him. Of course, if Sarkisian wins, this will all be moot. Still, the heat will be on in the short term.

    • Sarkiffen will get his 6 wins a year since he won’t have Idaho on the schedule!

  5. UW will never attract top talent to be a national power. Sark knew that and moved to USC to win a NC. The only run UW had was when USC and UCLA were both down and Don James was able to recruit well from Southern California; I don’t see both programs being down at the same time again. Petersen will be a failure at UW competing against the big boys.

    • I disagree with you. With new facilities and all their positions endowed, they’ll have some great years here and there, just like USC, Oregon, Stanford, USC, UCLA, and ASU. Sark did a lot to shepherd that program through a facelift and rebuilding.

      • Sark did accomplish a lot and UW even broke into the Top 25 this year – but that’s the ceiling. Of course only time will tell.

        • Don’t forget UDub beat Washington St. in their new stadium. UDub had to score more than 7 points to do it.

    • Once again you display your utter lack of knowledge combined with arrogance. Well done.

    • yes, and Don James never existed, UW never won the PAC and the PNW doesn’t produce any college football talent.

  6. Peterson would have mucked with unis and turned the field cardinal. We didn’t need that.

  7. Now that I think back on it, would Kiff have done any worse than Orgeron against a quarterback-less Neuter Dame or SUCLA.

And now Petersen is the flavor of the month

I will take Sark, with his upbeat personality and his obvious will to prove himself at SC

And as for Haden, recall he had one of the greatest moments in SC lore, in the 1975 Rose Bowl, when in the last minute he threw a 2-pointer to Sheldon Diggs to beat Ohio State for the National Championship. When eschewing his A.D. qualities don’t lose sight that he is one of the great Trojans of all time

  8. peterson seems a lot like Lane, (stoic and standoffish) we want someone like orgeron! (good w people) Ed is not an x and o guy! He is a rah rah who gets the emotional side and that can only get you so far. This is as far as i can see a hybrid hire. The guy who gets gets both. Let Washington have him!! see how that goes. Every week in the pac 12 is an emotional game w 5 star athletes on the other side. its all schools with storied history and expectations. He wil not be as successful and I hope he gets the job here in reality. Its not just beat a big school and play your schedule here!

    • The difference is Petersen didn’t get his jobs through nepotism and actually knows how to win with little talent.

      • agree. I wanted Petersen at UCLA. Guy’s a GREAT coach. Biggest fear for me as SC was looking was Petersen. Much happier with him at UW. How anyone would compare him to Kiffin is a mystery.

  9. I wanted Orgeron to be head coach, based on things he said and what he did and what he has done…this included he wanted to stay at SC,regardless of whether he was head coach or whatever,he loved SC and the players so much, that is what he said…he was offered the #2 spot,at the school ‘he loved to coach the players he loved’…his love turned to outrage when offered this high paying position,he resigned….he abandoned the team with a bowl game to play…why??? SC did exactly as he asked, the players wanted him to stay, SC fans hoped he would stay.Pride,I guess got the best of him,I understand emotion gets in the way of thinking;I will always respect what he did ,except the outrage part and resigning. He should have been a man of his word.

    • Can you remember exactly where Orgeron said he wanted to stay at SC regardless of Haden’s decision? I said the same thing in a post and someone asked me to produce the quote. Can you? Was it on TV, radio, print media?

      • sure,it was on the internet sites when they did interviews on rivals, scout, espn, etc…also he said it after being appt as interim head coach he said it more than once when asked do you want to be head coach, etc…the exact day etc…I do not remember, but they have it on tape, and if someone doubts your truthfulness, forget them…

      • Well, well, SUCUDubs very own censor. Where you been goofball. Some of your SUC goomba’s have been posting racial, homophobic, and misogynistic slurs. Why haven’t you been complaining? Are you just another useless SUC hypocrite? Smells like it to me. What a sniveling wimp.

        • You’re absolutely right! From now on I’ll denounce offensive language where ever I find it. Thanks for making me a better person. Jesus loves you. Well, maybe that’s a stretch. He thinks you’re an idiot, too.

  10. USC gets fat boy no talent loser Suckisian and Udub gets Petersen. You don’t think the Huskies are celebrating today

    • Sure they are, but will they in a year or two, Will USC be happy in the same time frame? You don’t seem to like anyone really.

  11. I hope USC won’t be looking for another Coach in 2017, because I really feel that Pat Haden made a mistake, I hope not but that’s how I feel. I heard Haden say during an interview yesterday that he only planned on being the AD during USC’s probation period, so if Sark does fail he won’t be there to hear the raft of his mistake.

  12. Pat Haden has been a real bonehead when it comes to the head coaching search. He hires a firm to do the dirty work, spends USC money on a worthless search, and then hires this fool Sarkisian to be coach. WTH ? This guy is really out of touch and needs to leave. Then, he manages to get Peterson to interview for the job, and then Peterson takes himself out of the process ? Why ? Peterson was a much better quarterback in college than was Haden and even Peterson won a National Championship while Darryl Gross (former USC assistant AD was there with him.. Haden was living with coach John McKay and Haden’s current NCAA compliance officer, John McKay Jr. while he was in high school and then enrolled at USC. Total nepotism. Peterson was not going to let Haden dictate to him how to run the program. Peterson has had more success in college football as a player and coach than Haden wishes he had. The little guy who was raised in a cornfield in northern California outsmarted Rhodes Scholar Haden and ended up with a better gig at Washington.
