USC Morning Buzz: Pat Haden, Steve Sarkisian On GameDay

USC athletic director Pat Haden and football coach Steve Sarkisian were in chilly Indianapolis this morning for College GameDay.

Haden: “At the end of the day, I think it’s his familiarity with USC, high school football, high school coaches in Los Angeles, he understands the culture of USC.

“He brings his own unique style to Los Angeles.”

Sarkisian on his offense: “We use the pistol formation quite a bit.”

      • Front page news in bumfuc Indianapolis. Priceless PR for the Pat and Sack Carnival. Who doing the recruiting in, you know, LA or California. Oh I forgot, SUCUub’s unique cheating tradition recruits for itself.

  1. Haden obviously puts recruiting as a very high priority. Even with Boise State’s winning tradition, Petersen hasn’t been able to recruit the top athletes. Sark will bring then in and let’s see if he can turn them into champions.

    • I agree – Sarkisian did wonders up there @ WA ‘because’ he knew where to go and get the low lying fruit here in the southland – Mora knows the talent is down here but still hasn’t figured out fully how to mine it thus his declining taking the WA job – he realizes now as Petersen is about to – it maybe a great place to coach (WA) but competing against USC UCLA, Stanford etc. is not in the cards.

      • Did he really “decline” it? I have a feeling he was GONE if UCLA didn’t meet 100% of his request or if negotiating went sour.

        Everyone has their price.

      • You seemed pretty worried – what’s up?

I pass on a quote from the top west coast recruit: “Coach Sark about to get a lot of West Coast recruits. Don’t be fooled (HeySUCs).”

    • Chris Petersen coached in two BCS games while at Boise State…how many did Sark coach at while at Washington? and why do a lot of Husky fans breathe a sigh of relief after he left Seattle?

  2. yeah Sark really turned all those top athletes into champions at Washington…how many BCS titles did he win while he was there Helen?

    • It doesn’t matter what his record at Washington is to Haden. Haden wanted to hear talk about national championships. Orgeron talked about relationships, players, healing, rebuilding. Haden wanted to hear talk about winning the BCS. I think this is why Wolf keeps referring to Haden’s “legacy.”

    • Let’s see if my comment goes through this time, so forgive any double posting.

Haden does not care about Sark’s record, he will contextualize that to Saban’s or Carroll’s performances before their success. Haden wanted to hear about national championships and that is exactly what Sarkisian talks about. Orgeron talked about relationships, family, players, rebuilding, healing. This is why Wolf keeps talking about Haden’s “legacy.”

      • Used Condom, please “contextualize” why your eyes are so close together. I own a dictionary, so feel free to use big words where little words don’t advertise you’re a Jr. College dropout.

    • Sark is the only coach in the PAC-12 that’s been a part of a staff that won a national title.

    • The same number of prestigious sports journalism awards Gargamel has won, Trojan Reach Around/godouche22…

      • awwww…you love Scott so much that you continue to post all the time…so I guess you must be one of the Internet geeks he talks about all the time, huh?

  3. Key points that jump out for me. USC is not playing today and they get on Game Day. Game Day did not bring in Peterson, who had great success in a 2nd tier conference. Sark’s statement that as long as the rules are the way they are now you have to run a no huddle offense, he can adapt and change based on conditions. I am optimistic about Sark.

    • I wasn’t keen on the Sark hiring but I like the way he has handled the situation so far. The next milestones will be how many draft-elgible players he can retain and how well he brings along a weak recruiting class.

    • What specific rules is he talking about? Substitution rules?

The advantage I’ve always brought up is that less penalties tend to be caught because the refs are often confused in the mayhem of a no-huddle. However, I have a feeling Oregon will get away with more than we will.

    • About what golden showers? The Pat and Sack good-night dog and pony carnival show does Indy. Who does Indy? As for as I know it’s just crackpots and third-string talent.

  4. It speaks volumes of USC’s prowess – the final day of regular games (mostly all conference championships) the AD (Haden) and newly named HC (Sarkisian) requested or were asked to be on camera for a short q & a – I don’tknow when was the last time a day before the two schools to face-off for the BCS CG, representatives from a school that is not even eligible to play in a BCS Bowl, appears on the national telecast.

Hats off to Haden in securing this presentation of our new HC

Mora et. al. would give anything to have that kind of cachet – not gonna’ happen

    Well done Pat Haden!

    • Just because you can’t remember something does not mean it never happens. Too bad you’re on the side of a team no one wants to talk about.

    • “It speaks volumes of USC’s prowess – the final day of regular games (mostly all conference championships) the AD (Haden) and newly named HC (Sarkisian) requested or were asked to be on camera for a short q & a”

It’s called showing respect and being relevant on the national scene. Something ucla could only dream of

      • That’s my take – note how Notre Dame now and UCLA are bonded like lost brothers keying in on USC – that wasn’t even a factor 40 yrs. ago. Back then USC threatened to cease playing Notre Dame if they (Notre Dame) played UCLA every year – now it doesn’t matter to Troy. Instead it matters deeply to both UCLA and Notre Dame that they BEAT USC – UCLA even has USC in one of their dopey songs they never sing – talk about an obsession.

    • Good point. They’re rolling out the whole PR campaign.

As a donor, I received a recorded message from Sark about 10 minutes after the press conference ended last Monday.

I called back the number that showed on caller ID and someone answered, “USC Athletics…” I told them about the call and they said it went out to all boosters and season ticket holders.

  5. Nothing against Sark, but I have a major problem with Pat Haden’s statement that his hiring decision came down to “familiarity with USC” and “understanding the culture of USC.” That is the wrong criteria for me – we should always get the best coach available. I was hoping that was why Sark was selected, but a 34-29 record is not encouraging. Past experience with SC a is pretty superficial reason to hire a head football coach.

    • USC is still trying to relive the Carroll days. They aren’t going to take a chance on someone outside (though this is why I have supported Orgeron because it would almost be better to wait out the sanctions and then gauge interest – especially with reports of people like Saban who may entertain leaving). If Sark fails, they’ll probably look for someone to create their own dynasty and is not a Pete Carroll (or one of his assistants).

      • I have a feeling it came down to what Pat wanted to hear during the interview.

I’m assuming the top 2 candidates were Peterson and Sark. We all knew Ogeron was given a “token” interview and Pat never could see him being a long term coach.

Between Sark & Peterson, I suspect it was a close race hinted by Pat’s statement, “We kept coming back to him [Sarkisian]…” What I speculate it came down to was the immediate expectation of re-building vs. competing immediately.

I have a hunch that Peterson didn’t give the answer Pat wanted hear. Something along the lines of “Realistically, it will take 2-3 years due to the sanctions and implementing my system on offense and defense.”

Of course, pure speculation. I think it came down to more than just Sarks familiarity with the program and him being a local guy.

        • I wonder – I’ve been lurking this blog for a while – but, Wolf keeps things very simple. That is, he tends to blurb little bits of information a lot of which is based on what he seeing (hence why people criticize him, but beat writing tends to be more intuitive anyways). I said this on another post – Wolf keeps talking about Haden’s legacy. I wonder if Haden heard the talk about national championships and focused on that. Orgeron kept talking about players, family, relationships. But, if Wolf is correct, Haden wants more trophies and he wants to prove USC’s legacy. Of course every AD wants championships, but maybe it’s more personal for Haden.

          • I think Coach O was never truly considered because Haden likely thinks his guy has to be a cerebral-type. Since Haden is a rhodes scholar and former QB, it’s likely a deep belief that the HC position needs to be a sophisticated one.

I personally thought coach O at HC would work at the college level. There are only so many working hours each week to plan Xs and Os.

In the NFL, the coach O types can really be exposed like Art Shell did in 1990 against the Bills. Even with multiple pro bowlers on his team, he lost 51-3 in a game he was clearly out coached.

          • I agree. I suppose the problem with O would be the need to have the cerebral types as assistants. They would inevitably leave to become their own HC.

          • Lurk and little else. Used Condom, you still haven’t answered my question: Why are your eyes so close together. Dying to know. Is it congenital, like your atrophied brain.

    • What Pat really means is Sack was the only HC Pat could locate to take SUCs HC job. Sack is the best SUC could do and Pat had to pay premium $ for the dubious privilege. SUC has been fished.

      • Hey – I’ll step up the pressure to have you removed if you’d like. War time. Bagged, flagged and tagged. And you *ussy friends *ucket and Thai. Say when hack attack.
