USC’s Las Vegas Bowl Challenge

FREEDOM.BOWL

Mark Crosse/Fresno Bee

The challenge for USC’s interim-interim coach, Clay Helton, is facing a Fresno State team that wants nothing more than to beat the Trojans and cement its legacy. That was apparent at the 1992 Freedom Bowl (above) when the Bulldogs upset a lethargic Trojan team.

“Names and logos don’t mean anything,” then-USC coach Larry Smith famously said. “You don’t beat someone just because of your name and logo.”

Smith was fired a few days later. At least USC’s already fired its coach this year.

  1. Take a knee, wolfman, time for a BRUIN update:

UCLA wins ANOTHER NATTY!!! # 110!!! Thanks women’s soccer!!! The most popular sport in the world, DOMINATED by Bruins!!!

Anthony Barr wins LOTT IMPACT AWARD!!! Despite the fact he spared Kessler!!

Bruins land CA’s top Def Tackle, Ainuu Taua!!!

Uh-oh, I’m getting that funny feeling agaaaaaaaaain!!!!!!

    • Women’s soccer is the most popular sport in the world? No. Men’s soccer, yes. And that is only because 3rd world countries can afford to play it.

    • Blah, blah, blah. Women’s soccer? Problem with the little gutties and you crotch kickers is that you can’t ever win the football natty! Trojans hold big-time court in that dept. Always have, always will.

        • You’re already looking at our schedule for next year? I thought Bruin football didn’t matter to any Trojan! Guess we have to reevaluate.

          • Better question – how many points did THE MIGHTY BRUINS lay on those gutty little torgans recently? That’s the question you should be focused on.

          • 35 aint 50, bud! But seriously, why is it that you fucla trolls always try so hard to change the subject when your uselessness is brought up?

          • Quite a few recently. Joe Blow is particularly busy over there. There were quite a few after the game and/or after the Sarkisian hire. It’s unclear how many Bruins are actually here…not sure how many have multiple log ins. I only have one and to to both sites.

    • LOL. No one care’s about women’s soccer, for one.

Two, I wouldn’t be so happy about a recruit just yet. There is plenty of time for minds to change and as we’ve seen with recruiting, minds do change. No one should be feeling anything until signing day.

    • But of course what the infamous CB conveniently did not mention was the that Trojan Men won their 6th consecutive NCAA Water Polo Championship.
Men’s Water Polo waaaaay more important than anything called women’s soccer.
Now as to that funny feeling….?!

  2. OK OK OK!…. Congrats ruin fans for getting the bid to the prestigious Texas Toilet Bowl. Nice Christmas present!

Another proud honor ucla earned this week. I’m full of envy!

  3. Guys going pro should want to show case themselves. Guys coming back next year should want to show their commitment in a meaningless game. Seniors not going pro are just going to party, they will be the toxic influence.

    • Seniors not going pro are playing the last competitive football game of their lives. I would think they’d want to win their last game, no?

      • Golden Trojan and Sureshot32, this game is “toxic”. Have you checked out the makeshift coaching staff. Anyway I think this game goes to script will be like past Trojan Yawn Bowls and the second coming of the Keystone Cops, Here is my script.
Its third and long, and the guys are in the huddle, and they are no longer whispering!

LEE: Just throw me the damn ball
NELSON: Shut up Lee, you all broke up, go sit down, i am the new sheriff in town
KESSELER: Can somebody keep at least one of them Yard Apes off my @$$
        KESSELER: Time Out
HELTON: Kesseler why did you call time out?
KESSELER: I have been waiting for the play
HELTON: Didn’t you get the memo?

  4. I actually thought of Smith’s infamous “parity” quote this morning when I read that SC had drawn FSU in the Vegas Bowl… My folks lived about three blocks from Mr. Smith when he lived off Angeles Crest Hwy in La Canada-Flintridge in the early 90s. Used to see him powerwalking on the weekends…RIP Larry.
