USC v. Texas: Which Job Is Bigger?

YOUNG WARE

There was plenty of debate during the regular season about which job was bigger and better? Now that Mack Brown appears to be on his way out, we are going to find out.

There are reports Texas will make a run at Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and the persistent Nick Saban speculation. USC hired Steve Sarkisian.

  1. The most RUTHLESS VATO in all of Norte America (yup, that includes Los Angeles) has gotta be El Lobo!!!! Southern Cal…(I don’t want to upset el pinche moderator) started off the search process by mentioning potential head coaching targets like, Cowher, Gruden, Dungy & Lombardi (Mercedes like) and ended up with Sarkiffian (a Yugo)! Let’s see if the rest of the country laughs at the TEXAS hire like they have at the Southern Cal hire.

    Fit UN YESTERDAY U!

  2. Good luck to the Texas Longhorns in getting Harbaugh away from the 49ers. They are moving into a new stadium next season, and can and will pay whatever he wants to stay. He left Stanford for a job in the Bay Area because he likes it there, and he wants to coach in the NFL. He is at the pinnacle of the profession, highly successful in 2+ seasons, and isn’t going to make a backwards move in his career. That will be a short phone call.

  3. But Sark is great … just ask him. But don’t watch a Washington game film or SC offense in 2007-2008. Those will tell you a different story. This moron will be a bigger bust than Kiffin.

    • Relax dude! you have your banana hammock all twisted-up….ouch! Give Sark a chance before you nail him to the cross. Are you related to Debbie Downer?

PS…. Kiffin is in the rear view-mirror, your username is LAME!….You might want to update it!

    • Yeah, that 2008 offense was terrible. USC ended each season with the same number of losses as the SEC national championship game entrant. SC just needed a Tebow-esque speech from Sanchez. In 2007, a thumb injury to Booty and inadequate preparation of Sanchez by Carroll cost USC a birth in the NCG – not the offense.

That said, Haden should have hired Petersen.

      • Losing to 41 point underdog Stanford cost us you mean. Who put Booty back in with Sanchez on the bench?

        • Who cares about the spread? The spread is just a fabrication to get as many gamblers to put money on the game as possible. In retrospect, a Jim Harbaugh coached team should never be a 41 point underdog in any situation. Now that we know what we know about Stanford and Jim Harbaugh, the correct spread for that game should have been closer to 20 points (USC did beat Stanford by about 20 on the Farm the next year).

2007 saw Pete at his most hubristic. He decided not to get points at the end of the first half and then kept Booty in there despite having Sanchez on the bench because he never played him in any meaningful situations.

  4. Harbaugh won’t answer the call. Tomlin will answer the call and say NO. It doesn’t matter who they make a run at, it matters who they get. I think they buy Art Briles out of his contract.

    • I was disappointed SC didn’t go for a former successful NFL head coach, it wouldn’t surprise me if Texas goes that route.

      • Gruden wasn’t interested. Cowher has said he is done with coaching. I wish they had interviewed successful NFL coordinators like Greg Roman or Mike Zimmer or Pep Hamilton.

        • Would you prefer another coordinator-type of coach?

I once thought that was the way to go until Coach O’s stint showed us how the facilitator-type can be very successful.

Gruden called plays in both stints as a HC, but he also had the rah rah and motivator personality to go with it.

          • I think the whole rah-rah thing is grossly overrated. Being rah-rah is not necessarily a part of being a good coach. Just look at Saban.
I really wouldn’t mind another coordinator type coach. If he can understand the game well, make half-time adjustments and get the players to understand what he’s trying to accomplish then that’s the coach I want.
Kiffin failed because he was a terrible play caller and his game plans were too cute. And he hired the worst O line coach in Cregg.

          • Rah rah is not the best description — I actually had Saban part of the “facilitator-type”.

My point was that I don’t think the coach who overemphasizes Xs and Os doesn’t do too well at the college level.

  5. Who cares who they call? We have our Coach and it is time to move foward. I hope they get who they want and that both teams get back into national contention so that we can meet them on the field – we owe them one…

  6. ESPN throwing Mora in as one of the best choices. BUT NOT SO FAST MY FRIENDS – we hear Sarknado may get the call! #thingsnobodyissaying

    • Why would Mora leave? He got an extension, a raise, and in ready to be canonized for making the same bowl that shoulda gotten Kiffin fired. He’s in an ideal spot. All he has to do is make a bowl and beat USC and UCLA will keep backing up the Brinks truck.

At Texas they compete for national championships, not for a berth in the Sun Bowl.

    • It stops when Wolf wants it to. Just in case you haven’t figured it out, Wolf INTENTIONALLY solicits these type of responses (and trolls) with his blog.

He’s trying hard to get the Jim Rome treatment that Jim Everett gave him. Unlike Rome, his confrontation on TV got him famous.

Wolf getting kicked out of practice did nothing for him.

        • You’re not smart enough to figure out that you’re included in that group of “fools”.

Even worse…you TROLL the so-called fools.

Tell me who’s the idiot? 400+ post count all trolling posts. What a waste of life.

I sincerely hope that someday, you can actually strive to INSPIRE someone rather than lurking a USC message board trying to ruin someone’s day.

But you won’t do it. I’ll tell you WHY: Because it’s too freakin HARD for your thin skinned brain. Unlike picking up on a woman, trolling has ZERO risks.

So, go ahead and bring your post count up to 1000+. Spend 10 hours a day here.

Just don’t expect it to get you anywhere in life.

          • Clicks? I think there’s only 5-6 UNIQUE clicks per day.

100,000 clicks from Bucket doesn’t get counted even if he uses 100 screen names.

One a serious note, if you compare the traffic of a REAL USC blog like 247sports with the “real Scott” Schaeder, there’s no comparison.

    • Please change your diaper. You keep smelling urine but you don’t do anything about it. We may have to call social services since it’s becoming a nuisance

      • He’s the new poster child for Depends. There is no excuse for the constant soiled diaper. Corporate should know about this…ouch!

      • Happens every time I go near that Dump on Figueroa 2-3 times a year. You see…I suffer from claustrophobia and the occasional visit to a USC Home basketball game helps settle me down. I gotta wonder if all those women covering their faces are “middle eastern” or they too are offended by the odor?

        fit UN!

        • Basketball games?.. confused again! We all know you’re notorious for trolling the men’s showers around the McKay center

    • By the way, it is painfully clear you have neither been to USC nor ever been downtown. Try hopping the blue line to the Expo line and check it out. You’ll stop making such a fool of yourself.

  7. I love the analogy. Texas goes with an NFL coach and we go with a barely-above .500 guy.

  8. I’d be shocked if Saban leaves Alabama. I think he and his agent are just using this job to get a bigger payday out of Tuscaloosa.

Texas has always been the bigger job. No school in the country save for Notre Dame gets the revenue like Texas does with the Longhorn network. The Big 12 lets Texas keep all the revenues while the PAC 12 insists on sharing all TV revenues. It is why the PAC 12 couldn’t get Texas to jump a few years back. It was Garrett’s constant complaint against the conference when USC had its run in the BCS and constantly on ABC. Any new coach in Texas is going to have resources that any other school outside of South Bend would kill for.

Now that doesn’t diminish the fact that Haden settled for his coach. This is Haden’s MO. He has no real vision for USC. He is simply managing the athletic department rather than seeking to transform it. He settled terribly for baseball. He rolled the dice on basketball but the expectations are so low, there was little downside. Sark is a safe hire. He won’t flame out like Kiffin. But he’s not a transformative coach like Gruden or an NFL guy. He’s not a high profile guy like Petersen. He’s just….safe. 8 wins in bad years, the occasional 10 wins when he has the right veteran players.

    • 8 wins in bad years. Occasionally 10 or 11. Sounds about right. Petersen would have been my pick.

    • That’s a ridiculous statement – no one leaves the NFL to coach college ball – it’s factual to go from the NFL to college is a full 2/3 rd drop in income and only coaches trying to resurrect their sorry backends go from the pros to the college ranks to get re-considered for the pros – watch Mora move on just as PC did and Saban wants to to get rid of his awful term with the Dolphins. Gruden has no interest in any college job – strictly looking at the pros the LA Times today laid out the lack of headaches of being a pro coach – NO RECRUITING NO FUNDRAISING!

      • Saban and Spurrier did….Pete did. Mora did. I always knew Gruden was a long shot but guys like Lovie Smith or Ken Whisenhunt would not have been…..

        • You’re not being factual TF – both Spurrier and Saban ‘first’ coached at FL and LSU respectively ‘before’ they went onto the pros – both failed badly and both returned to college ball

  9. Tomlin is bad news, especially after the sideline incident. Did he really step on the field purposefully? I’m not sure. However, his past has been checkered with cheating scandals. Plus, who has he brought in? His team is looking old and it doesn’t appear that he has set them up well for the future without their stars.

Harbaugh? Why would he leave? He has set himself up in NorCal. Plus, he seems to enjoy the NFL and has had some success doing it. The 49ers are looking good and the organization has a lot of money.

I can see Saban leaving. The UT system is massive, has a lot of money and Longhorns are serious about their football. Plus, the Big 12 is easier than the SEC (sorry, not sorry). Sure, there are some up and coming teams, but do we really think Baylor is going to be a long-term powerhouse? Plus, how consistent has OU been?

Give Bama fans credit, though: they don’t have professional sports teams so they are very loyal to football. Denny is a crazy stadium to be in around a bunch of Tide fans (I say this as an avid LSU fan).

Sark was hired because Haden did not want to take a chance on a no name coach. He also wanted someone who would potentially stay. The Harbaugh/Tomlin types would go right back to the NFL is given the chance.

    • Are you kidding? Tell me when any MO team was 11-1 – any! Look at TX A&M the past two years – they both were floor mats in the Big 12 – they hit the ‘Moonshine Conference’ and blamo – two years running at the top of that Potemkin Village. Why because their commissioner Slieve has rigged it so they only play 6 ‘in conference’ and then line up such as – ‘Furman’ ‘Charleston So.’ ‘ TN-Chanttanooga’ FL A&M etc..

Sark was hired because Haden saw what Sark did at WA and that Sark knows the LA basin for recruits – give it a time to rise and quit looking at the ‘glitter’

      • Sark probably knew exactly what Haden wanted to hear.

Do you think Kiffin was giving Sark interview tips?

  10. One more point: Haden will be judged on the success of the Texas coach. If Texas pulls in a big sexy name (or, at the very least, a name that is perceived to be sexy) like Saban or Harbaugh, Haden will immediately field questions of why he did not bring in those names. If said new coach is successful AND Sarkisian is average to unsuccessful, Haden will be in big trouble.

As I’ve said, there are high expectations at USC. USC wants to build, build, build and they need to the money from donors. Donors pay more when football is winning. You bet Nikias is pressuring Haden right now and Haden is silently hoping he made the right hire.

    • Nikias is doing nothing to Haden – nothing! That’s the kind of idiocy that is at other programs. Nikias watched an unapproachable control freak arrogantly dictate access to his office and interaction – Mike Garrett.

Quit whining about Troy not getting (fill in the blank) and relax – Briles is happy at Baylor and no other coach in that conference is going to Austin – none of them – they all universally hate TX because TX wrecked the Big 12 it’s why CO and NE got out as well as MO and TX A&M.

Good riddance to Mack ‘Jimmah cracked corn and I don’t care’ Brown and his whining back in 2004 getting all his ‘bro bubbas’ to vote his lousy team ahead of Cal for the Rose Bowl. One of the actual voters in that year’s ESPN-USAToday Poll was his own borther who was the HC @ AL-Birmingham.

Love to see Saban make this mistaken move (he won’t) and then find out he has to actually play outside the Confederacy and on the road for OOC.

      • I’m whining? Not really. Your last two replies show you really haven’t read what I’m saying (Of course Saban wouldn’t be an idiot to ditch the tough SEC to go to a cupcake sitting atop the Big 12 – duh). I’m saying what anyone clued into USC knows: it’s all about the money (as it is for any university), but especially USC given the goals Nikias has set.

Have you been around USC for the last five years? Because I have and I’ve seen the difference between Sample and Nikias. Nikias needs the cash. There is pressure on Haden’s coaching decisions to bring in the cash.

I’m also telling the common sense of the situation: Haden will be judged on what Texas does. Period. You may not like it, but it will happen. Watch the articles on this site/ESPN/LA Times/whoever if Texas hires a sexy name and Sark is doing average.

  11. Texas won’t get Saban, Alabama will enlarge his deal with them and keep him there. Why should he leave someplace where they think he walks on water.
