USC Morning Buzz: Coaching Staff Update While Waiting For Justin Wilcox

It increasingly looks like current special teams coach John Baxter will not be retained by Steve Sarkisian. A couple sources tell me USC would like to keep Baxter in an academic role if he does not leave for another coaching role.

Meanwhile, Washington defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is supposed to coach at Friday’s bowl practice for the Huskies. He still looks most likely to end up at USC as soon as his buyout and status with the Huskies gets resolved.

And finally, did anyone note that the likely offensive line coach, Baltimore Ravens assistant Todd Washington, is not the Ravens’ offensive line coach but the “assistant” offensive line coach. Andy Moeller is the Ravens’ offensive line coach.

That’s odd when you are USC and always told the school is getting one of the best coaching staffs in America.

  1. What would be odd would be to have Scottie act as an impartial journalist i.e. just the facts ma’am

In other news, of the 35 bowl games, the SC game is rated the 12th best and Virginia Tech-SUCLA is
    No. 18

The two games at the Rose Bowl are Nos. 1 and 2

      • Actually it is because Fresno is a better opponent than Va Tech. There are a lot of people predicting a Fresno win.

        • This. People are waiting to see USC fail, again. Just like they did against UCLA, and just like they did with the Sarknado hire!

          • Hey sped, leave your mom’s basement and go find a job. No, trainer 12 hours a week at 24 Hr. Fitness does not qualify. FightOn CRUSHED you and you continue to post lame stuff. CALLING YOU OUT chimp!

      • Apparently coaching at SUCUDub is a dubious job. Your AD advertised the best coaching staff in NCAA and your o-line coach is just an asst. o-line coach in the pro’s. A wonderful, a wonderful. SUC: UStub – south campus.

        • T. Mazzone was an offensive assistant. Were you complaining then?

Ulbrich was on a losing Seahawks, were you complaining then?

Martin was taken from UW after Sark got rid of him. Were you Post complaining then?

Yarber was fired after the team went 4-12. Were you complaining then?

A bunch of your staff is ripped from UA and ASU. Were you complaining then?

No, you weren’t. You were bragging about how you raided jewels from other teams (rather than settling for laid off leftovers).

Predictable troll is predictable. Sad troll is sad.

          • Your new O-Line coach is not a O-Line coach, he’s an Asst. wanna be O-line coach. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t SUCUStub’s O-Line a concern to the new staff, because of O-Line injuries sustained in the UCLA game and lack of O-Line depth. SO Sack hires a wanna be to rebuilt the SUCUStub O-Line. What ever you say Lose on. “When you wish upon a star…” LOL.

          • No worries FUCLA fan. SC will “lose on” to another 10 win season (7 out of the last 10) while FUCLA attempts to “ATE CLAP” their way to 10 wins – Dream Season- No BCS – Sad little bRuins. But hey, you gutties did win 35-14. I guess that counts as a Natty, doesn’t it? We’ll give it to you. That makes…2

          • Of course 10 wins don’t mean much to a bRuin fan – hard to find meaning in something you know very little about. Enjoy the Sun Bowl FUCLA gutties. That’s exactly what 35-14 got you!

          • if SC played 18 games, they might win 12. Unless they played UCLA 18 times, in which case they’d win 0! BOOM!

          • Yawn. UCLA 35 – suc 14 in the game, at the Mausoleum, that counts. UCLA will forfeit the other 17 imaginary games you propose. Get a life.

          • So this a$$ clown heyfuk says get a life as he trolls an SC blog 24/7? Are they really that stupid? You couldn’t make this stuff up…

          • But SUC’s loss to UCLA was the reason for SUC’s invitation to the “Take Dump” Bowl. SUC FB: Queen of LA.

          • With a RS freshman QB (Browne), a 2nd or 3rd rate O-Line and managed by a bought and paid-for UDub 2013 coaching staff. Unless SUCUDub is scheduling 2nd tier FCS teams, a 10 win SUCUDub 204 season is a Bomber pipe dream.

          • Hey dip$hit, do your research before talking out your a$$! This guy has a track record, and coaching ability > coaching titles, just ask your current line coach (where was he before Mora brought him on board?)….

    • Yup and fUcla can’t even get a sniff at those games with their best team in years as they say !!! on their so -called home field

  2. IMO losing Baxter is big mistake. It’s still not to late. I fail to see what Wilcox has over Pendergast. Especially with that price tag. Who is Todd Washington, what are his creds.

This pains me to say it, but what the heck are we building here.

    • If you know so F ing much, why don’t you call Max and take Haden’s job or call Haden and get him to fire Sark so you can be the HC.

    • It’s not building, it’s deconstructing a Goat shed and replacing it with a UStub pig sty.

    • Research his creds – he looks pretty good, and I’m guessing he must be a great fit coaching-wise. No offense, we had TWO guys with great pedigrees coaching our line this season, and our line underachieved. Coaching ability > coaching titles, didn’t we learn our lessons (both good and bad) during the PC era?

    • Maybe Sark actually saw Ishmael Adams of UCLA go for about 40-50 yards on every kickoff return a couple of weeks ago and wasn’t all that impressed. Now I don’t think Sark was a great hire for SC, but he does deserve the chance to put his own team together.

  3. Scooter’s right, assistants to the OL coach is a joke when Tim Davis is unemployed. Oh wait, he thinks the other half of the Dimmer Twins is an idiot as well. And I would add that there isn’t one guy on this staff that’s older than 38 or 39. You kinda need a few adults who have been around on a staff, or did the end of the PC era teach you rah rah idiots nothing.

  4. Steve Sarkisian is proving me right as the days go on…lol !! He can’t even recruit a highly thought of offensive line coach, and didn’t he say a few days after his press conference that he is going to assemble the best staff in college football ? And most in the College Football Coaching ranks think John Baxter is one of the best special teams coaches around, but Sarkisian doesn’t seem to agree. Didn’t Pat Haden just give Baxter an endorsement a few days ago ? This Sarkisian hire is starting to look very comical to me.

        • Hey SUC_LA
No..But I will give the only AD in LA to win a national Championship and the only HC in LA on staff to win a NC the benefit of the doubt over a bunch of slappy trolls

          • And the only LA FB team voted #1 in the pre-season college football poll to lose 6 games in the very same season, and establish a unique NCAA FB record for utter failure. You win Wally.

    • From the Raven’s website (he sounds pretty qualified to me): Todd Washington is in his third year as Baltimore’s assistant offensive line coach. Washington, who played eight years as a center/guard in the NFL…. In his second season with the Ravens, Washington helped guide G Marshal Yanda to his second Pro Bowl, while RB Ray Rice broke 1,000 rushing yards for the fourth-consecutive year. The Ravens’ offense set a franchise record producing 72 offensive plays of 20-or- more yards. The former Buccaneers’ fourth-round draft pick (1998) spent one year as the University of San Diego’s offensive coordinator after guiding USD’s offensive line to success in his initial two coaching seasons.

        • Look at Klemm’s pedigree and stats the last couple of seasons. Are you saying he is a weak coach?

          • His actually better than anyone on USuCks coaching staff and definitely one of the top 5 recruiters in the nation, taking into account as his took over UCLAs OL they’ve manhandled #USCELITEDEFENSE and the only stat that comes to mind is 2 – 0!!

          • His actually better? His took over? My head is hurting from reading that sentence. Oh, and #’s don’t work here. Menso.

          • 35 – 14 reading that okay, menso es el guey que invento ese hashtag, no sera de USuCk??

          • Yawn. Congrats on the win troll. Now go back to Westwood. 50-0 is what I’m remembering….

          • Actually majored in Finance, but I’ll play along -The bRuins failed to qualify for a meaningful bowl for the 13th year in a row. Wooot Booommm ATE CLAP

          • History major how many SC coaches does it take to beat CMora in a single season??
            #Sarknado LMAO!!

          • Guey the #’s don’t work here. Ayy guey we had this convo less than 2 hrs ago. Not sure what the question means, but I’m glad it made you LYAO. Hope it didn’t make you go BOOOM in your shorts.

          • You certainly weren’t an English major. Personal pronouns help. I’ll bet your biggest business success to date, was leasing an eight-year-old BMW with a SUC license plate for 10 years.

          • Thanks for the English lesson Suckface. You might want to take a refresher course on the use of commas. Feel free to troll all of my posts and point out any writing deficiencies. ATE CLAP

          • I’d call it a distant memory under a crummy coaching staff. Unfortunately for SUC, 35-14 is FRESH BABY!

          • Thanks for making my point…much like FUCLA with the Duh-rell, New-weasel, USC was mired in the Lane Kiffin era. It took a great amount of dysfunction for SUCLA to get anywhere near SC’s level. Enjoy the fleeting moment while it lasts…

          • What’s SUC’s level? Your AD couldn’t give the FB HC job away. He had to purchase 80% of UDubs FB staff to the extreme delight of the UDub AD. UDub than hired the HC who refused Haden’s offer with SUC money. LOL.

          • that’s sweet. Sorta like a nostalgic old movie star remembering when she was the next big thing, only to be pushed aside by newer, better models.

          • Best recruiter in the nation? Do you even read your posts before you hit the send button? I’m sure Alabama is crapping their pants as I write this post. Just because you beat us in a down year doesn’t mean as much as you wish – you a$$ clowns went 9-3 under a supposed incredible year and give your coach a ridiculous extension. Wow, you might want to set your expectations a bit higher there kid.

          • Vegas greater than that crap fest of a city you’re team is headed to. Of course you’re not going, guess your welfare check doesn’t stretch that far these days….

          • I’ll try to argue with stupid, so here goes… You clearly know nothing about football. Your OL was a weakness of your team this season, a team that finished 9-3 (i.e., FAILURE). Your offensive coordinator schemed in a way that tried to hide the weaknesses of your OL, an OL that has been notoriously weak FOREVER it seems. No wonder Mora wants to stay at your $hit hole of a program – the fans are CLUELESS and so easily satisfied. Eight crap that weak season all you want chimp…

    • He’s too busy butchering the English language and misspelling every word known to man. Oh, and being Gargamel’s twin.

  5. Just because Todd Washington is an assistant offensive line coach doesn’t mean he is not a good coach, as Scottie implies. This is the normal job progression for all coaches.

    • Scottie is hilarious. I’ve yet to see him write anything to suggest that he possesses even an elementary knowledge of football. Maybe he should pick the coaches since he knows what the “best staff ” looks like. FOF!

    • If he so good, why is he just an Asst. coach? Must be a Cap space issue or he just might not have the experience to assume the role of a full on O-Line coach and associated its responsibilities.

      • He’s no longer an asst line coach! In all seriousness, your guy Klemm had a crappy background (four years at SMU isn’t much to beat your chest over), so you’re saying Klemm sucks?

    • A$$ clown – errr, Bucket Boy, do you sit around all day and laugh at your own posts? Seriously, do you realize how lame this sounds to the rest of us? You find vague, meaningless references amusing? Seen your mom naked one too many times and this is what you do all day to get the image out of your head?

  6. But it’s okay to lie about him the “assistant OLine coach” because the Trojan staff would like for the recruits and fans to think they got themselves a jewel, typical Trojans. LMAO

    • No one lied. Scooter just reported it incorrectly. Every other site got it right.

Chuckles please ask your idol to improve in his reporting skills.

  7. I agree Wilcox most likely to SC. But CP and Wilcox have more history than Sark and Wilcox…

  8. I can’t help but notice that several persons who are among the more credible commenters (IMO) are skeptical of the program’s direction.

My preference would be to hire the best teachers, and let Sark and his non-coach assistants handle the heavy lifting in recruiting. Player development at USC has not been consistentlly excellent, and that same criticism was leveled against Sark at UW.

I would think that recruiting is not ultimately more important than teaching. Recruiting is sales, and that temperament may not make the best teacher. I think it might be better to strive for more division of labor if that is in fact possible. I don’t know enough to say.

    • You’re right.

I love Neu, but one of the problems during his tenure at UCLA was that players did not improve; I recall one of his defensive linemen having to learn certain fundamentals after leaving the team to prepare for the NFL.

  9. You asked for it you got it. A slightly over 500 record d 1 coach. What is even more delightful is that you poached a 500 coach. The fact that he left in the heat of recruiting speaks volumes about his character. What a liar. what a quitter.

  10. Thanks for taking Johnny Nansen off our hands. He’s Sark’s tail-chasing buddy. He coached positions he had no expertise in. Addition by subtraction for UW.
