Take A Look At James Franklin

Vanderbilt’s won 15 of its past 19 games but apparently James Franklin didn’t warrant more of a look from USC even after Chris Petersen pulled out of the coaching derby.

  1. Come on Scott, we got Bowl prep, recruiting, and a new coaching staff of our own to focus on. Why are we looking at a guy who never really was a candidate? I really wish you could move past attacking all things USC football and focus on reporting on USC football.

    • Do you think Wolf is capable of objective reporting on any of the topics you mentioned? He’s best suited toward commenting on sock colors and shoving his breasts in some unsuspecting journalism undergrad’s face.

      • From your ‘nomme de plume’ I’m guessing you’re exposing your backend for ‘relief’ 24/7 – shake it (rui!oipian…hmm yeah babee – you de ‘beeee-atch!’

    • Bowl prep? Really? Did you miss the blog post about recruiting? You Sunshine Pumpers are forever “moving on” instead of trying to think about what just happened to our program and learning from our mistakes.

        • What’s the good in a coaching search that was a laughing stock? Now the nation actually thinks Texas is a greater program than us, which we Trojan fans know is not true. We’ve been diminished by Haden The Rhodes Scholar’s incompetence and laziness in picking Pete Carroll’s protege instead of launching a truly national coaching search.

  2. Trolling for comments. Franklin wins against bad teams. I posted this a while ago and then my commented was deleted. Yawn.

    • Yes vandy is a bad team, it be like trying to win at stanford. No coach can do that…. ohh wait a minute.

      • Vandy is 17-8 in their past two seasons combined. Wolfie can gloat about their little cupcake schedule all he wants.

Let’s break down their season: They played against only FOUR teams with winning records at the time of play. They lost three of those games. Their fourth loss was in the first game of the season.

Their wins were against teams that were 19-39. Only ONE of those wins came to a team that had a (barely) winning record.

Franklin is 23-15 as a head coach and 11-13 in conference. Sure, we can put into perspective that the SEC is tough. But, really, Vandy played only four teams with winning records. Around seven teams USC played had winning records at time of play, about two or three more had equal wins and losses. That is much tougher schedule Franklin would be facing (and much higher expectations).

Ya, I’d say Wolfie and Trojan Nation wouldn’t be all too happy had Franklin been hired. Wolfie just likes to complain.

        • Vandy is the Northwestern of the SEC. What Franklin has done there is nothing short of a miracle. Meanwhile Sark couldn’t match Ed Orgeron’s record in the Pac 12 in 5 tries.

          • Are you saying they had the same level of talent? Rediculous to rip Sark just because you’re bitter CEO didn’t get the job.

  3. Upcoming episodes in Wolf’s “Take a Look at…” series:
    Nick Saban
    Tony Dungy
    Coach K

    Dale Earnhardt Jr.
    Venus and Serena Williams
    Colin Powell
    Oprah
    Sandra Bullock in “Gravity”

  4. I think he was busy game planning for Wake Forest.
From what I understand, Haden didn’t interview him because we already other coaches available who would lose every game against ranked opponents. And Haden also was having problems changing our schedule to accomodate Franklin’s preferences: Army, Elon, Presbytarian, UMass, and Austin Peay. Perhaps its because he’s not sure where most of those schools are.

  5. I offer a $5 gift card to anyone who knows where Elon, Presbytarian, and Austin Peay fly in from without the help of Google.

      • I wonder if there are three teams that couldn’t beat Hawaii?
Oh, didn’t need to look too far. This old Vandy schedule came in handy. ARMY!
A child is asked by a divorce judge, “son, who do you want to live with?
The child says, “the Army’s football team.”
The judge asks, “not your mother or father?”
The child says, “Not my mother, because she’ll beat me…and so will my father. But Army won’t beat anybody.”

    • It might as well be a million dollar gift card. No one knows where those schools are, probably not even the students that attend.

    • Terry Pluto’s excellent history of the ABA, Loose Balls, tells the story of NY playground legend James “Fly” Williams. Fly is probably the most famous Austin Peay basketball alumnus. When they recruited Fly, they let him make his own travel arrangements. He flew to Austin, TX and wandered around the city asking people “yo man, where’s the Pee?” He called the coach who tried to get him to fly to Knoxville , but he refused. ” No way man, I’m going back to NY.” So the school flies a recruiter to NYC and collects him, and they finally fly to Knoxville, there he signs his LOI.

I just love thinking of a 6’6 guy with a huge afro wandering around Austin asking people ” Where’s the Pee?”

      • Hahaha…that’s a great story. I grew up in Austin, so I knew Peay wasn’t there. But that’s a good laugh all the same. Thanks for sharing.

  6. And if he was hired you would have ripped that as well. You will look for anything negative and exploit it.

  7. Unbelievable Scott. This is getting so annoying. What’s your fascination with Franklin??????? No one here cares. Worry about Carr and Fresno……

  8. I’m guessing Elon flies out of Myrtle Beach. Presbyterian I think is South Carolina, so I willsay Charleston and Austin Peay out of Austin TX…..

    • I just looked it up…
      Elon = Greensboro, NC
      Presbytarian = Greenville, SC
      Austin Peay = Knoxville, TN

  9. I’m ‘guessing’ the real ‘skinny’ will be ‘what went down Charlie Brown’ at the Commodores program after Franklin ‘books’….come on MO has nothing to show for over 50 yrs. in the Big 12 and in 2 years it’s in the SEC Conference Championship Game?

Vanderbilt’s rise is admirable but pray tell why couldn’t: GA, So. Car. (lets not confuse the bel-airians ok?), KY, TN, MS, MS St., AR, FL, LA St. (opps my bad LSU) not play against Auburn?

Good coach – high learning curve per recruiting in the Pac-12 – opps almost forgot – ‘blank’ Lane Kiffin!

  10. Some lucky big name program is gonna scoop him up– we know it won’t be us. Time to move on.

  11. Didnt have any West Coast connections.. Would take USC much longer to compete, compared to Sarkisian..
Think about it, and rewrite this!
