USC Takes Washington Recruits; Washington Takes Boise State Recruits

Quarterback Jalen Greene of Serra High School switched his commitment from Boise State to Washington today. That follows Steve Sarkisian taking commitments from two players originally committed to Washington: cornerback Jonathan Lockett and defensive end Don Hill.

Remember when USC used to steal players from schools like Florida State or even UCLA?

USC is on probation and in a transition year Wolfie. That’s not conducive to stealing players who have been recruited for over a year by high-flyers like FSU. Be serious. Sark’s compilation of his new staff is much more important than any players he adds on to the existing Trojan list. So far, he’s done okay after three weeks on the job. It’s USC’s 2015 class that will once again contain the elite names, who if not coached well, won’t get USC back to the promised land anyway. Remember when USC used to be able to sign 25 prospects a year? That seems like a long time ago.

    • ScottWolfSniffsHisOwnFarts

There is no sense trying to explain this to Wolf. He is a cynical moron.

    • SonOfWestwood

Smart post. A good staff is the most critical element of success, even if it means missing out on a couple of recruits.

  • FMUSC81

i know Wolfe can be Daft , but i agree with him on this one!!!

Pete Carroll was able to land Blue Chip players his first recruiting class of 2001 … Shaun Cody, Matt Leniart… What’s Sark Excuse ? As a USC alum…. Sanctions , and transition are not an acceptable excuses not to go and get “Five Star” recruits …. Go sign the best 19 players in the Country , Like Howard Jones, John McKay and Robinson… and Pete Carroll did.

Pete Carroll recruiting standard was simple…. Go after all the recruits he felt had the skills to be a 1st Round NFL pick… i guess Sark missed those meetings , or feels he doesn’t have the skill set to make those assessments.

i’m sorry but probation? we should like Lane Kiffin , PC walked into a program in 2000 that had a complete meltdown that year… I know cause I was in school at the time, and remember how we went from #9 in the country to last in the PAC -10…. Washington went to the Rose Bowl, yet PC out recruited “Slick Rick” that year….considering what the Trojan Family has gone through this year….athe skill set to make those assessments.

Jack B.. you talk about probation, but PC walked into a program in 2000 that had a complete meltdown that year… I know cause I was in school at the time, and remember how we went from #9 in the country to last in the PAC -10…. Washington went to the Rose Bowl, yet PC out recruited “Slick Rick” that year….considering what the Trojan Family has gone through this year….and with nineteen spots available and with a chance at 10 win season, Sark should do better and get the nineteen best players in the country…. We’re USC and don’t hide behind excuses…. We FIGHT ON ! and CONQUEST!!!

When Pete Carroll took over, the Trojans were not on probation. He wasn’t restricted numbers-wise. Big deal! If USC could take 25 (non early enrollees) I’m sure USC and Sark would put together a helluva class in Feb. USC didn’t get their best recruits initially under PC by “stealing” players from other big-time schools. PC signed some guys initially who never had any business coming – but he had plenty of room to make mistakes. Right now, USC’s biggest problem is deciding who to sign and who to put off, based on what happens down-the-line. They’ve already got plenty of big-timers on their radar who won’t announce until late or on LOI Day. But they’re gonna have to pull back some offers and massage their numerous needs and numbers restrictions. The show has just begun. The last six weeks of recruiting will reveal just how clued-in Sark is. Gonna be a tough balancing act, especially if the Trojans lose close big-time battles at the end, like Kiffin did.

And as I said, getting the right staff is still way more important than signing a great class right now.

      • FMUSC81

I agree with the right staff, and don’t see why Justin Wilcox is this “X-Factor” DC !!! I know Nick Holt was thee Golden turd of all Turds, so it could’ve only gotten better with any DC… Clancy took us to 16th in TD yet he’s not getting any consideration unless Wilcoxs say no or if they can’t agree on the buyout

PC did steal recruits … Leniart was going to Oklahoma and committed to them as a junior, but when other offers rolled in he de-commuted…. Shaun Cody never had USC on his short list and was down between Stanford and FSU until PC made a run at him… and the following year … Mike Williams was going to stay at one of the Florida Schools until PC and Norm Chow said …” We’ll let you play WR… we don’t need a safety”

        • Jack B

Cody was actually committed to USC before PC came aboard. Coach O convinced him to stick with it once PC kept O on the staff. Cody was all about Coach O. Leinart and Williams were not part of PC’s first class, I don’t think, which is what I was talking about. To ask Sark to cause decommits of super elite players (which he wasn’t recruiting at UW) when he’s not even coaching the team yet and doesn’t have his staff in place is completely unreasonable – hence my original post.

          • FMUSC81

Leinart was part of his first class and was a big get, cause every ” Recruiting expert thought he was going to be a Sooner…. Cody did Love coach ” O ” but Ed was in limbo since he was a hold over from Hackett so that’s why Cody wasn’t sure about USC…and moved from them until O and PC made a hard push… Cody committed on signing Day… and if you look at PC class outside of his first three classed he took 20 or less recruits , but was always in the top 10 and with the highest avg recruiting rank…. I don’t consider the sanctions as an excuse cause when you’re SC and finish last in the pac-10…. that’s the equivalent to being on probation…. Sark doesn’t get a pass… Haden brought him in to Recruit the best players in the country …. Yes he got a few good so cal recruits, but UW is not USC and this program should not be settling for the easy get!

          • Jack B

As I said, recruiting isn’t done yet. Nobody is giving Sark a pass, He’s got time to recruit a superior class once he nails his staff down. But bringing in the guys on decommits from UW at this early stage isn’t a bad thing, Those guys can play and one’s an EE, so that simply had to be done, or lost forever. Leinart, from Mater Dei, was never “stolen” from OU. SC always had a shot at him. We’re talking about Sark’s first class here, not classes three years down the line. You said Cody never had USC on his short list. Not true. He always loved Coach O and he didn’t choose USC just because PC made a run at him. He chose USC because O was retained. Cody committed to USC and O before, not on, signing day,

          • FMUSC81

All in all … i hope he proves me wrong .

        • FightON

Leinart committed to Hackett first. Then Hackett was fired. Pete had to make a run to get Matt to stay.

          • TrojanFan3.0

I sure do miss the Leinart era!

        • TrojanFan3.0

I like the direction Clancy has this defense going in, solid improvements across the board. Perhaps a top 10 unit next year if key personal returns

    • gotroy22

You know your football, FMUSC81. Pete also stole five star OL Winston Justice right out from the ruins that February!

      • FMUSC81

Not only did he steal Winston… but Winston also recruited the Bing, Wright, and Dennis .

        • TrojanFan3.0

Dennis…haha!… That guy was on the six year plan and always hurt!

      • TrojanFan3.0

I got my eyes on you!

    • Joe Blow

Agree, but as big a d bag as Hackett was, the cupboard was full.

      • FMUSC81

Does anyone remember Hacketts first recruiting class ? Carson Palmer wasn’t even his best Quarterback recruit that year ! Hackett couldn’t hack-it as an HC, but could recruit especially on the offensive side of the football… not many remember he recruited Kelly and colbert, and almond who were 5star WR recruits. He also got Vandermade and jacob Rodgers

    • FightON

If you have limited players, it’s best to get your numbers up. USC cannot keep playing with a thirty player differential. The five stars have multiple offers, tons of competition, and pressures of social media which gives fans full access to the recruiting process. Also, don’t always trust the star system. I was watching a game just the other day with a scrappy three star breaking around four and five stars.

      • TrojanFan3.0

With the way recruits are today, you can’t count the eggs in your basket until the LOI is signed, sealed and delivered!

  • TrojanFan3.0

Bucket(wolfman), you need to play fair!

You can dish it out, but you can’t take it, truly pathetic!

    • ThaiMex

I (we) have no idea what you are talking about, 3.0

I like how you use both personal pronouns “I” and “we,” Summers Eve. Are you speaking for all of Chuckles’s fake logins?

PS…..Please thank Mrs. Bucket for the selfie. I decided to use it as my avatar

You’ve been banned two times and you still come back. You love Scott’s blog.

      • TrojanFamily

I agree. Although he is not as big of a Wolf rah rah as you are. You could be his press agent!

      • TrojanFan3.0

        NO!……I love you….OOOXXXOOOO!

  • Toejam For Life

I thought that SuC recruits itself! You would think that Sarkiffen would be forming relationships with elite players that didn’t go to Washington that may want to go to SuC. I can’t figure out why! But, I guess some guys like to suck and be able to break the law without serious consequence! If you guys want seven win seasons, keep doing what you are doing! Seven Win On!

    • FMUSC81

      Crickets ….crickets !!!!!

    • TrojanFamily

You are trolling Scott here. He is the one who maks that idiotic argument.

    • Joe Blow

You are so right. We’re trying to get this guy that gets in car accidents (drunk of course), gets his girlfriend injured and runs away like a sissy. But I think the bRuins are going to sign him.

  • TrojanFamily

Didn’t Wolf just post that USZc got a recruit that Oregon wanted?

His trolling at the end of this post is undermined by his own “reporting.”

Or maybe, since the Chris Brown post had actual information in it, an intern posted that one.

  • steveg

Times are changing, USC is coming out of a bad time, not as bad as the ncaa or fucla hoped it would be, but not good in USC standards. Sark is working it the right way, start with some good changes, good commits, then the really good ones will sign, then the great ones will be coming. Be patient.

    • anno nimus

just bad enough to get a good ole’ fashioned asskicking, 35-14

  • snarfy

Wolf, do you remember when that recruit switched from Alabama to USC a few weeks ago?

  • Evil Robot

That would be like if SC got a commitment from a 4-star offensive lineman, who chose SC over UCLA, Oregon & Texas A&M. But it would have to be recent history, like yesterday. Maybe they could land a DB like Lockett, who was recruited by UCLA & Notre Dame. Maybe we could go in the Way Back Machine, all the way to Dec. 12th, when Claude Pelon chose SC over Florida St.

I guess we have to go back to ancient history, like last season, when SC could pull Leon McQuay & Quniton Powell away from schools like Florida St.

Wolf, you are bad at your job.

    • anno nimus

Just in this class alone, UCLA has won the recruiting battle with $UC, Adarius Picket, Jaleel Wadood, Austin Roberts, and Jordan Lasley all chose the Bruins over the Trojans. nuff said.

      • Evil Robot

Yes, that is a true murderers row of national level recruits that will decide both this recruiting cycle and probably define the next four years.

I would tend to believe that where Adoree Jackson, JuJu Smith & Damien Mama will go a bit farther in determining who has the better recruiting class, but what do I know.

      • FightON

But not one USC recruit was considering UCLA, right?

Hey, do they teach logic at UCLA? Or is that one of the classes that got cut with the budgets?

  • Fred Sampson

If and when Steve Sarkision establishes himself as a top notch Coach like Pete Carroll did, the recruits will follow . But right now Jim Mora and his staff over at UCLA currently have a grip on all the Southland talent, and that’s because they can see what he’s building over there. This is the first time in over 25 years that the Trojan staff will be challenged for 5 star talent by their cross town rivals. Sarkision has a lot of catching up to do, so we will soon see if he’s everything Pat Haden thinks he is.

    • sureshot32

Mora rode his father’s coattails into coaching (like our favorite former coach) and has never lost fewer than four games. He needs to beat the Hokies of Virginia Tech to break this streak. I’ll feel safe giving Mora his due when he earns it. So far, he’s earned squat.

      • Fred Sampson

I think UCLA is in a place it hasn’t been sine the Terry Donahue era , I’m not crowning Jim Mora yet either, but I will give him his due. Let’s wait and see where he is after he has 4 recruiting classes under his belt . That’s how I judge a Coaches success, which is why I think Steve Sarkisian was a poor choice.

    • ThaiMex

Mora and staff are not STAR CHASERS. Just look at SCUm to see how many FIVE STAR prospects are vastly OVER RATED. Character, desire, work ethic, and potential are more important than your SILLY star system. Townsend, Sarao, Dillon Baxter, Markeith, the late great James Blake, Silas (coach I’m Hurt), and MANY MANY more prove it! Wasn’t it just last FEB., “ELMIR” the Bedouin Sheep Guy, proved YOU guys had the #1 Rated recruiting Class in the History of Recruiting. Weren’t you ranked TOP 10 in recruiting the previous 6 YEARS? You can have all the SPECIAL ADMIT FIVE Star recruits you want. STARS only tell a little bit of the story.
      fit Un!

      • FightON

So which UCLA player has more character: the kid getting hit by a car after drinking a little too much, the three thieves, or the alleged rapist? Quality players. Lulz.

  • sureshot32

Who gives a rip what school you’re stealing players from, if the kid can play, the kid can play. There are fantastic players that slip through recruiting services’ cracks and go on to do great things both in college and in the NFL. What would Wolf have said if USC had signed guys like Khalil Mack (Buffalo), Derek Carr (Fresno State), Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), or Blake Bortles (Central Florida)? All of these guys are projected to go in the top 10 of the 2014 draft, yet none of them went to a power school.
If you start worrying about who else is recruiting the player you’re after, you end up chasing stars like PC did at the end of his run.

  • anno nimus

    and UCLA takes USC recruits.

  • B.Miller

I remember last month when Bama got their pocket picked.. But that’s not worth mentioning is it Wolf?
