Steve Sarkisian Wants To Hire Ed Orgeron Back To USC

USC coach Steve Sarkisian told 710-AM he would like to bring Ed Orgeron back as defensive line coach.

“I am going to pursue Ed here one more time,” Sarkisian said. “I thought about him again after the game on the ride home. I think when emotions get settled down, and I know that was an emotional time for Ed and not getting named the head coach when he thought he should have been deservedly so, I would have felt the same way.”

This epiphany coincided with the fact Tosh Lupoi is out as a coaching candidate, of course.

  1. It looks like the spirit of the Season is catching. And what a wonderful gesture by Sark. But pride runs deep and I don’t believe Ol’ ‘O is coming back.

    Speaking of the spirit, I noted that not one of the Westwooders said anything positive about SC’s victory.

    I guess the spirit does not quite make it out Westwood’s way.

    • Actually, `I said it was a nice win for the kids after everything they have been through.

      I also think Fresno was way overrated. They have played nobody…only beat a bad Hawaii team by 5 and gave up 62 points in a loss to San Jose State…so not quite like the win over Stanford.

      The coaches also did a fine job in a tough situation.

        I’d say this is what separates USC from UCLA – family is real.

        • Don’t think SC is anything special in that regard at all….just a slogan. I think it reflects well on Helton and his level of professionlism.

          The lack of “family” in my opinion was that Haden seemed to have already made up his mind that Orgeron was not a HC candidate while trying to give the appearance that he was being seriously considered…which he wasn’t. The next day after the UCLA game he was hiring Sark. So, IMO Haden was being disingenuos and that’s when Ed O went ballistic.

          If there is no greater Trojan than Ed…perhaps Haden could have handled things better. Perhaps not…but it isn’t like he chose a great, accomplished coach.

          • Perhaps he is just laughing at the concept of major college sports and family. It simply does not exist anywhere. Ask Troy Williams of UW how he feels about the family at UW when Sark left after recruiting him…called him out for being a phony.

            Ask Kiff if he felt like a Trojan family member after he was fired at the airport.

            It isn’t family at SC or anywhere else. It is about money and winning. SC no better than anyone else in that regard.

          • The comrade can’t handle the truth about SC. It isn’t even a criticism really..simply the truth about what matters at SC. What matters at SC is winning and making money. When SC talks about its history it is talking about its NC’s, its Rose Bowls and its Heismans. It is all about doing what it takes to win. It isn’t talking about family and it isn’t talking about graduation rates.

            Do you have any idea how much money Pete Carroll made the university? The increase in donations? Do you have any idea how many more applications the school received during those years?

            So when Haden sees tha fans booing and the Coliseum half empty, he needs to save the program and the revenue. He is the head of a very profitable business. To claim otherwise is ridiculous. The `’family`’ concept may be something you can sell..but it is all about the winning and the cash. Just like it is at any other school….not better and not worse.

          • I hardly invented the term “Trojan Family”. It has been used countless times over the years by SC. I did mock the term because it is all marketing. The “family” can often turn on itself when the team isn’t winning but suddenly becomes a family when it is….which is pretty commomplace in sports.

            You are a member of the Trojan family until the family tosses you out on your butt.

          • I am sure…but I also think Haden could have delayed it for a day. It isn’t like Sark was going anywhere.

            The best part about O is he is emotional and pumps kids up. Also the worst part about O.

          • Bottom line is it is a business. Why lead O on? I don’t think Haden has done even a good job as AD, but he was right on this one.

          • The decision was the proper one…but he had led O on for several weeks. He never considered him a serious candidate. The extra time was to let the last loss settle in for a day before the discussion.

            It is a business…which seems to be upsetting some when I criticize the Trojan “family.” Family handles things differently…and Haden is a phony.

          • You are wrong AGAIN. You don’t keep a family member in the business if it is not the right fit. You obviously don’t have your own business. Haden is a Putz and I agree, a phony. But in this case, he did the right thing and SC needed to move quickly.

          • If you look, you would see that I said the decison was the proper one. And yes..if there is a family member in a family business not pulling his weight…he needs to go…but Haden and his holier than thou attitude and the Trojan Family he spouts off about does not square with how he handled things with either Kiffin or Orgeron. I don’t like either one of those guys…buy my main point is it is a business…and not so much a family, if at all.

          • Haden is a phony. But I think he handled Kiffin poorly but Orgeron was handled correctly. In any event, Haden is KILLING athletics as a whole.

          • And by the way…I worked in a family business until we sold it a few years ago. I hired and fired a lot of people over 30 years…and it is not pleasant firing people. Always had a rule for myself not to fire people when I am pissed off. For the most part…you and I agree here….shocking I know…but it is the Holiday season…my only difference with you on Orgeron is that I think he had time to wait a day for Ed to recover from the loss to UCLA before the conversation…but that is splitting hairs a little bit.

          • I agree. But O should have said ok, nothing else, no complaining (even though he’s FURIOUS) and give it a day, if not 10 min. Instead, he stormed. Huge mistake. If I were him, I’d take it.

          • I think we already agreed that O’s ego is bigger than his brain. I also think that if Haden is as “classy” as he claims, he doesn’t fire Kiff at the airport…as big a douche as Kiff was, he deserved better. Gotta think that he and Nikias could have kept their mouths shut for a day.

            Part of it for me is that I always respected Haden. My blood runs deep blue, yet there are Trojans that I have always liked…OJ (before the killings), Marcus Allen, Ricky Bell and Haden to name a few. Haden has not lived up to my expectations with how he has handled things…so I think I have moved more over to your side on that than vice-versa.

            There’s a rumor that Coach O not only was told he wasn’t getting the job prior to the UCLA game, but that he actually TOLD THE PLAYERS before kickoff on senior day.

            Those like me who were at the game saw the touching gesture by the team in forming an “O” in the middle of the field. If they knew he was coaching the bowl game, why would they have done such a thing?

            After that emotional gesture, you almost felt the air let out of the stadium. After a rollercoaster of a season, there was nothing left in the tank and since UCLA lost to ASU the week prior, there was nothing to play for.

          • No it is … their a reason your a Bruin for four years and a Trojan for Life … i.e. Dorrell on Ken Norton… guy cheered for Dorrell and when to his press conference in support and cold shoulder him … I know your gonna mention Pola , but Hitting the HC is gonna get you fired at any play regardless…if it was in the right ! Pola could come back to SC at anytime after Kiffin was canned …. No Program can side with Asst over HC on Program strategy

          • Fresno State sucked…watched the game. An El Paso…the city and the bowl game suck. Just because I don’t like El Paso doesn’t have anything to do with elitist. I have been there…didn’t like it.

          • I agree especially with EL paso and considering … El Paso is more exciting for the kids from Blacksburg… they could be really pumped … i mean it’s natural for the LA kids to look down on the SUN bowl and dumpy El Paso…

  6. I hope Coach O gives it serious consideration. I think most of the Trojan Family would welcome him back with open arms. Sark’s a smart guy. He can see how much value O brings to the team.
