USC Morning Buzz: Cody Kessler, Max Browne, Max Wittek Edition

VEGAS.BAND

Steve Sarkisian’s told some inside the program that Cody Kessler is speedy enough to run his no-huddle offense. Kessler’s foot speed was not a strength this past season. But there seems to be a rush right now to say USC must use a fast quarterback for Sarkisian’s offense.

The fact Jalen Greene recently committed bolsters this viewpoint. But let’s remember he was headed to Boise State until the Sarkisian-Chris Petersen dominoes started falling. At the end of the day, Sarkisian is not stupid. If Kessler is the best, he will run the no-huddle. If Max Browne is the best, then he will run it. And no one seems to realize Max Wittek is probably the fastest of the three on the current roster.

  1. Kessler was overall impressive, and now has 14 games under his belt, 9 as the starter, so he has experience over the other two

Witik had his chance but I did not like his lack of touch on the ball

Browne, well, he was a star in high school, but who knows

  2. I remember Wittek scrambling in the Rose Bowl last year and was surprised by his speed, especially for his size. He’s a legit running threat.

  3. I’ll be knocked off my chair to hear Cody Kessler lost his starting job at the start of next season with all that real game experience, which other guys don’t have. Max Browne should be his successor in a few years. I really don’t see any future for Max Wittek, unfortunately. Yes, he’s got a great arm, but that’s all he has. He’s got no poise and no finesse.

    • He isn’t that special, the most average starting QB at USC since Mike Van Raaphorst. If he starts, get used to annual beatings from UCLA and ND.

      • I agree. I don’t think he was truly special. I was also very surprised by his lack of mobility. I think we should have a competition at all spots in spring except at the spot where Leonhard Williams wants to play.
Have a QB competition, but make a choice by the first week of Fall camp.

      • George, at last we find some common ground! Insufficient ball placement over 25 yards to compensate for poor velocity. Habit of throwing late. Hit him a few times, and he starts missing passes when he isn’t terribly pressured.

    • There is a Youtube video of Wittek in HS doing passing drills. Every so many passes he would throw it to the wrong person. There are issues with accuracy and Kiffin probably didn’t help his confidence. I doubt Wittek stays.

Maybe that is what Greene is banking on: Wittek transfers out and then Greene is third string and a few injuries away from playing time.

      • Browne ran a spread offense in HS … The Spread doesn’t require you to be a burner at 4.4 … Just mobile enough to put pressure on the backers to open up mid level passes between 10-nd 20 yards … Browne can do this … Biggest reason Sark fought for Browne until his LOI was faxed to USC

        • Exactly. But maybe a player like Greene thinks he is the next Winston and Manziel – that he can sling the ball decently enough and run through the defense. This would be unexpected at USC and USC’s defense has trouble handling these sorts of guys, so perhaps he thinks he can impress by showing the weaknesses of the defense during practice. Still, it isn’t happening. Not from what I’ve seen.

          • Haha …. Possibly ! But Browne just looks so good on tape … The downside to Browne is that if he does a good job Rosen from Bosco is gone … Nonetheless I agree a dual threat QB would catch everyone off gaurs

  4. I was deleted on the last post because I called Scott “fat, bald, and he talked with a lisp.” I didn’t even mention that this sexuality was in question.

      • Don’t worry, Scott has plenty of alias’ to respond to you under. Chuck-Buck-Douche, Hey SUCLA and ThaiMaid are just a few. We all know the truth about this embarrassment to USC and the Daily News. Haden will only indulge his hack-writing for so much longer, before he bans his attendance at USC (communicating the good news to short, bald and sexy in a parking lot at LAX no doubt).

  5. Jalen Greene from most reports is a very talented football player. He could be invaluable running the scout team in preparation for Oregon type offenses. This not only would help the defense but help him mature as a QB.

    • I’d love to see where anyone claims he’s a very talented player. There’s a reason he had one offer until Petersen went to Washington. And its not like people weren’t getting a great look at him especially since scouts sell out Serra games to catch all of the talent around him. When you have 19 schollies you can’t give rides to kids whose best asset is what they can do for your scout teams. Even spread obsessed Wolfie doesn’t think he can play QB at SC. Good luck getting him to play defense or receiver with 4.9 speed.

      • Now that we have Greene, does that mean we don’t go after the Rosen’s of the world now?

        • Probably. Sark has not contacted Kaaya since being gifted the job. Haven’t heard much about him talking to Rosen. He seems to favor glorified running backs at the position so we have that to look forward to.

          • Hmmm…Let’s pay Tom Cable the 2 mill we said we’ll pay Coach O. Have a beastly O line, run the ball like there’s no tomorrow and hope our current set of QB’s are good enough to make play action passes.

          • Rosen leaving out of state … Closes to LA will be Stanford if he stays in state …. Word around a camp fire is he wants to play in a pro offense

      • I am not saying he will ever play a down as the USC QB. I’m rationalizing and trying to figure out why Sarkisian offered him. Rivals has him rated the 19th. best dual-threat QB in the nation so he must be a pretty good football player. Scout team QB’s for last three years?? And for the record I am not a Sarkisian fan.

        • I totally respect your position and I don’t mean to seem like I’m coming down on you. Any frustration I have is more with this lackluster hire and the fact that Sark thinks turning SC into Oregon is the way to go when no true spread team has ever won a natty. Cam Newton and Tebow were power run teams from the spread. Rivals has him as the 19th best DTQB which sounds decent, except when you look at it, they only rank 26 in the nation. So again, we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel to get a mediocre player with limited scholarships. The NFL is moving away from the read option because it doesn’t work. Spreads rely on undisciplined defenses making mistakes. If everyone plays assignment football, you get no where ala Oregon vs. Stanford. I have no problem getting a QB with both attributes like Kaaya, As a matter of fact its a necessity in today’s game. But Greene is not going to stand in the pocket and get you 4th and game against Stanford like Kessler did. SC’s offense really needs two things. A better line, and a better play caller. Helton did a pretty good job when taking over for kiff. There really is no reason to reinvent the wheel. Anyways happy holidays!

          • They only LIST 26 in the nation. I have never seen the kid play but go on what I read. ESPN’s Greg Biggins had nice things to say about his passing ability right after he committed to USC. Scout has him rated 45th. best QB (any type) in the nation. As much as I am puzzled by the Sarkisian hiring I don’t think he is bringing Greene in to change to a spread formation. Unless he thinks he is another Mariota (***/4.7-40). I think I agree w/Helen…the Jackson Theory. If USC wins the South and Oregon the North Sark’s got his scout team QB.

  6. Jalen Greene is a generous 4.8 40 guy. He also cannot throw a rock in the ocean. Sark is turning USC into Cal in Tedford’s last few years. Although Zach Maynard might have been better.

    • OK…let’s try this without getting stuck in moderation.

I don’t think Greene will be a QB. Greene thinks he can compete with the other three because he feels is more of a threat. But, in his commitment interview, he claimed that he is pass first…so he’s going to USC as a pass first run option QB against others that are more talented at passing…Plus, are Kessler, Wittek, and Brown really that much slower to the point where Greene is a shoe in? Probably not.

    • Which is what we should be talking about. Wilcox had slightly better stats in the games USC and Washington shared, but he also has a full roster and did not have to clean up Monte’s mess.

  7. Unless Browne develops quickly this coming year, none of these qbs are difference makers. So a good OL coach is going to be key.
