USC Morning Buzz: Marqise Lee, Charlie Strong And Dabo Swinney Names In News

DABO

Here’s my story on USC wide receiver Marqise Lee’s decision to turn pro and how it affects the Trojans, who are thin at receiver. Link here

Meanwhile, reports indicated Texas is close to hiring Louisville coach Charlie Strong. He never appeared on USC’s radar despite his 12-1 record this season. By the way, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney pointed out after the Orange Bowl the Tigers are 22-4 the past two seasons. Did he get “vetted” by USC? Probably not. Swinney is from the South. Not the South Bay.

  1. Marqise Lee obviously made a wise decision for himself and his family. I would have been really surprised had he not made this decision. And of course there will be a huge void in the receiving corps for the next season. You don’t replace a stellar player like Lee with a guy from the street. And all of these changes make me really curious as to what kind of season we’ll have next season. I can hardly wait…

    • Marquis is a great Trojan who played with passion and he will be sorely missed next season.

      • Agreed. He is an extraordinary player, who will be remembered as such by all of us for years to come. No doubt about that.

  2. What about me Wolfie? I NOW OWN THE LOS ANGELES TIMES TOO!

Check out the Letters in Sports! Joseph B. Lowe aka Joe Blow. Clowns galore.

    • What a great Bruin fan! Love it! What’s next…Seymour P Butts…Ishmael P. Freeley?

I am so happy to read of your concern for Brett Hundley’s future. Glad to have you looking out for the kid. AND… you didn’t say you were doing his mother.

  3. Only goes to show that depth in football is crucial. Lee was not himself most of this season, and so it aided some of the others to try and shine. Hopefully this experience will help the receiving corp in 2014

  4. I’m still waiting for Scotty to be named AD. All these great ideas just wasted on UCLA lurkers.

    • Imagine Wolfie conducting a USC coaching search. First statement to coaching candidate: “We’re looking for someone to lead this program who never needs to do any homework or research on our opponents. Think you can do that?”

  5. Swinney also went 1-4 in the regular against ranked teams over that span. They lost to the conference champ. Florida St. 100-51 in two games and culturally, he’s about as good a fit for LA as Col. Sanders.

Your whole South Bay thing is as confusing as it is tired. Sarkissian has been living in either Hunts Point or Yarrow Point for the last 5 years and Kiffin was in Knoxville. Is South Bay your new code for “they used to coach at SC and lived by the beach”?

  7. Scottie: USC hired a new coach weeks ago – get over it. Your stupid puns are, well, stupid.

  8. Wolfie, ever been to Clemson? Obviously not. The coach who is happy there, like Dabo, would never make the switch to a place like USC. So why vet him? No reason. It’s called wasting your time.

  9. Ok Wolf, at least you’ve gone a couple of days, without a story specifically about Kiffin. Those rehab classes must be helping your withdrawls.

  10. Why do you keep bringing negatives about the coaching hire. I thought this was a Trojan site. How about something about recruiting, any final additions to the staff etc… That would be interesting and maybe a little more positive.. Personally who cares about the other coaches. I do care about USC and the program going forward.. Maybe you could discuss the impact the Trojans will feel about the departure of the Juniors to the draft and what needs they have to address for this cycle of recruiting.. Just a thought

  11. The USC “scholarship distribution chart” is now at 54. With only 19 schollies allowed (4 EE + 15 Reg.) = 73 maximum if no one else leaves early???

  12. Thanks to Marquis Lee, some great and exciting times with you on the field. Best of everything in your future, you will always be a Trojan.

  13. Scottie wants us to believe USC is thin at WR, but we have a platoon of excellent receivers: Farmer, Agholor, Mitchell, Rogers plus potential new entries in Jackson, Fields and Lasley. I’ll take that group over any other school.

  14. Have to wonder if this topic would be up and running if Clemson had gotten blown out last night – it wouldn’t.

  15. Scott Wolf is an idiot who like most in the media find it very easy to attack others no matter what they do or say. There is always two sides to everything and so called journalists know how easy it is to jump on the other side of an issue. If USC had spoken or hired Strong then Wolf would be stating why did they not talk to Sark. Hypocrisy at its highest level, the American media.

  16. I appreciate the analysis of Lee’s draft position. However, your juvenile remarks like the ‘south not the south bay’ and others that are similar don’t add any value.

You’ve clearly been on this beat too long and the Daily News would do both you and USC a favor by reassigning you to a new beat.

Familiarity breeds contempt. This works both ways.
