USC Morning Buzz

DORTON

We mentioned this before but we continue to hear USC’s backed off committed defensive end Malik Dorton. One thing to monitor is whether new defensive line coach Bo Davis actually speaks to Dorton in the next couple weeks.

Steve Sarkisian’s barely talked to committed players that he doesn’t want, i.e. wide receiver Shay Fields.

This might be news and it might not. Our depth at DE is not so bad that we can’t forgo one on this signing day to help supplement our other shortages. Sark may need a scholie for someone Wolf doesn’t know about. If we lose one out of three DE commits seems okay if we get a good player to fill the slot.

    • Helen

Someone Wolf doesn’t know about? Are we talking about the same Scott Wolf?

      • steveg

Ya, with his “sources” he knows so much.

    • gotroy22

      How about a punter?

  • Nigel Tottenham

Prof. Sanchez, I saw your comments on the prior posts, and I believe I have figured out your curious code — a very CAPITAL system! I’m relieved to know that you do not scoff.

For four mornings now, I have seen the Polynesian symbols on buildings along Orchard Ave. Each day’s markings seem to vanish overnight, to be replaced each morning by new symbols a bit further south and closer to campus, most recently along a wall bordering the Cardinal Gardens parking lot. Today I will search the ethnology collection in Doheny for clues as to their meaning.

Critically, the symbols are always roughly two feet off the ground, and did you note the response I received yesterday on this blog from that Soviet fellow, regarding the connection to dwarves?

    • https://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charlie Bucket

i am digging this Nigel’s diary. got a Swift/Shelley vibe. looking forward to more installments!

i must admit the first thing that comes to mind is Homo-Floresiensis, but not enough empirical evidence to posit a theory as yet.

      • steveg

Bucket you never cease to amaze me.

        • https://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charlie Bucket

there have been two recent major discoveries related to primate species, and instances of “extinct” species “reappearing” occur at least annually. i don’t discount any possibilities.

      • Nigel Tottenham

The so-called “hobbits of Java”? That is an interesting observation, but that species is thought to have gone extinct thousands of years ago. If an otherwise respectable graduate student were to suggest that such prehistoric little people still walk among us, would that student not be thought somewhat… mad?

        • Independent_George

This is the most lucid coversation I have read on this blog for months.

        • https://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charlie Bucket

if you find any symbols written 10-12 ft off the ground, i have another candidate for you, and i do have mountains of empirical data to support that theory.

          • Nigel Tottenham

I warn you, sir, do not attempt to waste my time or the time of Prof. Sarawut Sanchez with irrelevant sasquatchian trifles.

          • https://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charlie Bucket

Nigel, be advised i studied under the great Dr. Gail Kennedy at UCLA. i’m sure you are aware she is considered the Grandmother of the Gigantopithecus/Bigfoot hypothesis that is now the dominant operative theory in the Bigfoot community.

if we’re wrong, then explain the TV reality shows “the $10Million dollar bigfoor hunt”, and “Finding Bigfoot”. Shirley, you are not suggesting all these people are wasting their precious time searching for a myth?

          • steveg

bucket, always remember it is still just theory. Continue on.

    • steveg

I was considering perhaps more than one. Seems to fit well.

      • Nigel Tottenham

        More than one what?

        • steveg

More than One dwarf. Could be an entire “cadre”.

          • Nigel Tottenham

You suggest that the markings could be communications from one individual to an unknown number of other individuals able to decipher the meaning of the symbols? Perhaps so. I must study this matter tonight.

          • HeySuxx

            Must we wait for Nigel?

          • steveg

It’s his gig, we need the best opinion available.

  • Sportsblab Jones

Good point, Wolf: this is something to monitor! Why don’t I research it and report to your readers? I know you’re busy working on a snide remark about Kiffin.

  • FightON

Off-topic: for all the gutty talk about UCLA’s dominance, Google the exact phrase “usc pac12″ (you can put in any team you want, just be sure there is no space between “Pac” and “12″). There, you will find conference standings of all teams.

USC’s record versus Top 25 teams? 2-1. Same as Oregon.

The gutties versus Top 25? 2-3

Where is Felicia to tell me about dominance?

    • ProbationU

Given that you lost to UCLA and ND, both in the Top 25, not sure how that computes. Was ND unranked at the time? And Fresno is now unranked where they belong. Interesting…but not all that relevant considering the head to head match.

      • Jack B

You actually expect USC to beat ND or UCLA with our ride reductions? Wish we could have played the Bruins saddled with our numbers. Would LOVE to see that against a Mora-coached team. Coaching problems aside, USC cannot compete with strong teams consistently with our numbers. Sure, we beat STAN. Lucky day, actually. We had no business winning. The Cardinal gave us the game, We couldn’t beat ND even though they lost their QB. Why? Not enough depth or experience at the QB spot, or anywhere else on the field. Crow all you want about the head-to-head match-up. We’re playing with a hand tied behind our back, and no, it’s not because we cheated. It’s because the NCAA decided to take us down because Bush’s parents were on the take. The proof our coaches knew about that is so weak and feeble, the NCAA just said USC “should” have known because Bush was a high-profile player. USC was held to a different standard. As a result, you have a 2-game win streak. Congrats. I would expect nothing less.

        • Joe Blow

I’ve been saying this for months. The f ucla trolls are clowns.

          • FightON

They get their feelings hurt easily. It’s why they wear baby blue.

          • TrojanFan3.0

            Thin-skinned…..fuc ‘em!

          • FightON

It’s hard when your “dominant” team still cannot beat ranked teams even half of the time.

I trust what Google says over what trolls say. Lulz.

Good to see you around, btw!

        • ProbationU

Sorry you got so upset. Wasn’t crowing at all. The numbers quoted about the SC record against top 25 teams was suspect. And yes, we expected to beat SC and expect to again…but the originator of the post said SC was 2-1 against ranked teams. I think that is clearly inaccurate. That is all…folks!

          • Jack B

Sorry you don’t understand what “upset” is. Lame, defensive response of yours. Let’s keep this simple for you. I’ll simply point out the obvious. The little gutties hold a huge advantage over USC because the NCAA stripped our numbers massively. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be beating us, as is amply demonstrated by your inability to ever win any big games. USC can beat Stanford, but you still can’t, even though you have at least 25 more scholarship players on your roster than USC. Go ahead and deny it. But this season, as well as last, proved you can’t beat the good teams, which is why you only ended ranked #16 (even though you killed VT) – which is actually a fantastic ranking for the annually mediocre little gutties. FightOn was absolutely correct. You’re never dominant, always mediocre. Makes sense. You’re standards are very low compared to USC’s.. “That’s all folks!”

          • ProbationU

So I guess you aren’t on the our 75 is better than your 85 bandwagon?

Easy to get confused with some of the massive Trojan egos displayed that think they are better than the Bruins even when depleted.

And yes, you got caught cheating. Garrett didn’t want to know and let Pete run a very loose ship because at the time of the hire, Garrett’s job was on the line. You also had issues with Joe McKnight and OJ Mayo in basketball. I do agree that the NCAA singled you out and that OSU, Miami and probably most of the SEC probably have violations much more severe than at SC. However, they played the game with the NCAA…and Garrett was defiant. `he handled it very poorly.

          • Jack B

How did USC cheat? What did they do? I can’t wait to hear this. Pete ran a loose ship? Wow. I guess you were there. That all you got? So did Wooden. Real loose. SC got hammered for doing nothing more than most all schools are doing, right now. That includes UCLA. Garrett’s defiance was undoubtedly a factor but that’s no excuse for the NCAA’s tactics and penal approach to USC. The NCAA is more corrupt than any 10 schools combined. And if they weren’t, John Wooden would have been exposed as the best coach who ever let “whatever happens, happens” dictate enormous illegal contributions to the program and high-profile players by Sam Gilbert. And yes. I was there.

          • ProbationU

The Wooden/Sam Gilbert times along with the McKay/Robinson/Marv Goux times were in a totally different era. Compliance is looked at much differently and the “see no evil/hear no evil” defense doesn’t work anymore.

Can’t run things that loose anynore and not raise red flags. That’s why you have Haden…it’s about politics with the NCAA. Garrett not a politician. Too many boosters and agents present at practice. Tim Floyd seems to generate controversy wherever he coaches.

Fully agree that the other schools have worse violations. OSU was a joke. The entire SEC is a pay for play conference. Of course, Manziel signed all of those autographs out of the kindness of his heart. At the end of the day, the severity of the sanctions was avoidable had Garrett had an ounce of humility and expressed some remorse…sincere or not.

          • Jack B

Agree with you on many points. However, even in current times, the same massive amount of violations goes on. And only some schools get nailed. And it’s not just who plays the game. It’s also who’s in the game – as in connected through relationships to the NCAA itself. It’s a rigged game. And to punish Garrett for his lack of humility should be an appealable issue in itself. Un-American. Should Donald Trump be punished by our court system because of his attitude or public quotes? No. It should all be about actions and evidence. If we can only get all those NCAA emails released about how they wanted to take down McNair, we’ll all get a chance to see what USC was up against. Thirty kids who wanted to come to USC were unfairly denied admission and had to go to other schools. But, the penalties are almost over. In three years, we’ll be back all the way and fielding a complete team. McNair will have a big settlement with a non-disclosure. The NCAA will still be running rampant, picking and choosing who to nail. Bush’s parents will still be divorced and wondering, “Was it worth it? We cost our son the Heisman Trophy.”

          • ProbationU

Reggie could have just been smart and not cheap…and paid the guy off. Probably cost him a lot in endorsement money…a young, good-looking football player should have been a cash machine and became kryptonite.

And regarding Garrett’s arrogance…it is human nature to take exception to that..fair or not. Some coaches are better at working the refs than others. If you show up a ref or an umpire, it doesn’t help. NCAA is a joke…everyone knows it is all about the $$$.

          • HeySuxx

Bottom line Jacky, Succ got caught and PO’d the Judge. It’s one thing to get caught and quite another to compound the original offense by refusing to show a sliver of respect.

          • Jack B

NCAA deserves no respect, except from scum like you. Go ahead, lick their boots little gutty. That’s what you’re good at, bootlicker.

          • Trogan Fan

Now THIS is RICH! SC is the 2nd most sanctioned program of ALL TIME! Every decade they cheat and get slapped. SC ONLY WINS when they’re cheatin! Yesterday U!

          • Jack B

Indeed, USC is very rich, much, much richer than UCLA. Sorry we are viewed as a top five football program and you are only a 15-20. Even though you had a much, much better team than our ride-depleted club, you finished on at 16, with us only three spots back at 19. The USC name rides to the rescue. Even when we are bad, we’re good. And even when you should be great, you’re only good. Little gutties never win football championships. Mediocre U!

          • HeySuxx

            You were there exactly where?

          • Jack B

Exactly where the little gutties were when they got free things under the table. It was no secret, really. Lots of people know this, Troll Boy.

        • SoundsLikeBoom

“We’re playing with a hand tied behind our back, and no, it’s not because we cheated.”
ummm…actually it is because you cheated.

          • steveg

We didn’t cheat. Bush’s parents cheated. Get it?

          • SoundsLikeBoom

Sorry…no difference. And everyone knows it…except SC fans. Cheating is cheating. End of story.

        • FightON

Can we please talk about this cheating crap?

Cheating would be taking performance enhancing drugs in order to perform better to beat other teams.

Cheating is not some idiot parents trying to profit off of their successful kid. If anyone thinks Bush’s parents are the only ones trying to profit, they are total idiots. They probably also believe Manziel has not ever autographed for money. I mean, please. I’m not saying it’s right, I’m saying have equal punishment.

There are lists of universities with far worse infractions than a kid’s parent benefiting, yet they face little to no repercussions. Why? Because the NCAA messed up. Big time. That’s why they have a lawsuit from the assistant coach on their hands and why they continue to throw shade instead of releasing the documents.

Still, it’s fun to point out how bad UCLA is against ranked teams. The trolls get all butthurt about it.

          • ProbationU

If you are going to point something out, you should at least be accurate. Last year we beat 3 ranked teams, Nebraska, Washington and USC. We lost to 3, Stanford, Oregon and ASU. That would be 3-3.

SC lost to 3 ranked teams, ASU, ND and UCLA. Beat Stanford and Fresno. I may be missing one but I am sure you can correct me. Either way, looks pretty similar.

        • gotroy22

We were expected to win the national title last year with our ride reductions. How many players did Orgeron play against Standford, rah rah?

          • Jack B

Please become a UCLA fan stupid22. They could always use another idiot, lame supporter like you. Nobody with a brain ever expected USC to win a national championship with Kiffin as coach and USC on heavy probation. How many players did Orgeron play against UCLA, wah, wah? How many times do you need to get your teeth kicked in the this board?

      • FightON

ND was not ranked. Not according to the week to week.

        • ProbationU

So losing to an unranked team is better? All of our losses were to ranked teams…SC lost to ND and WSU, although I thought ND was ranked. No, we aren’t at all dominant…but the point you are trying to make regarding the records makes little sense.

    • anno nimus

I believe you lost to ND, ASU, and UCLA..I see a 1-3 record vs. Top-25 teams. ..what else can be expected from an ignorant condom?

      • SoundsLikeBoom

        typical trojan math…..haaa!!!

      • gotroy22

Trojan Fan is an embarrassment to real SC fans.

        • TrojanFan3.0

          FU!…wrong person, nice try!

    • Caster Troy

a 3 loss season and Sun Bowl appearance is dominance? Not to defend Bruin fans, but I doubt even they are that stupid to claim that as “dominance”
For USC, that would be considered an “ok” season

      • FightON

Trust me – hang around here long enough and you will hear Bruin fans speak about how dominant they have been because of this year.

Did you hear about their new banner announcing two wins in a row over USC? They call this dominance too.

        • HeySuxx

Dominance Lose On is UCLA mugging succ FB team eight consecutive times. It’s a record.

          • Jack B

Then, as soon as you lost, you couldn’t win again. USC lost once, then started winning right again. 12 of 13 is much better than 8 of 13, idiot.

      • ProbationU

Agree with that Troy…not dominance. Was making the point about the records against top 25 teams..which is incorrect. It will be 2 to 3 more years before SC at full strength. We will see what happens. This season was another step in the right direction for the program, nothing more.

I don’t see the Sark hire as a great choice..but these are all opinions that will be borne out with time or proven to be incorrect. Certainly not the 2nd coming of Pete Carroll in my eyes and the league is much stronger top to bottom than ever before.

      • FMUSC81

Read the Ruin trolls .. .they claim Dominance.

  • they hate cause they wanna

that team in westwood wish they could achieve USC status

  • ProbationU

There was just a decommit from Texas for a defensive lineman with a long, polynesian name. He was also being recruited by the Bruins. He decommitted because the only relationship he had was with Bo Davis and he is now gone. Common sense would dictate that he might now be looking at SC. Maybe Davis would prefer him over Dorton.

    • Nigel Tottenham

      Polynesian?

      • ProbationU

Trey Lealaimatafao. You want to correct the origin? I would guess Samoan…but I am not sure, so used a more general term.

        • Nigel Tottenham

Could the mysterious symbols relate to this? At this stage, nothing is too bizarre to be ruled out.

  • B.Miller

One more year and all are welcome!
