The Importance Of Walk-Ons

USC is giving a media tour today of the new aquatics center made possible from an $8 million donation from former swimming walk-onĀ Fred Uytengsu. This is significant because walk-ons often are the most appreciative athletes. And in light of this, it makes it strange that the track team this year basically decided to adandon having walk-ons.

Just a few years ago, USC won the dual track meet when a walk-on unexpectedly won a distance race. And who knows what walk-on is being denied this year that might be a benefactor 20 years from now.

  1. I don’t know if I recall Gargamel complaining about something before. He’s usually so upbeat.

  2. You’re missing the “why” – as in, why’d they make the decision? It’s called completed staff work in reporting. Finish strong, Scott!

    • I was wondering the same thing. Scott makes the decision sound inexplicable, so why’d the track team do it? I know this is just a blog, but it’s weird how often Scott’s posts raise more questions than answers (sometimes the answers are implied, but not this time). They should call this blog “Wolfman’s Realm of Mysteries” — then he could end all his posts with a question, which he already does half the time anyway.

    • I’m wondering if they simply changed their process. It’s very easy to be considered by the USC track team: on their site, they have clearly posted standards as well as a questionnaire to fill-out credentials.

Their standards are posted for full and partial scholarships as well as “invited” walk-ons. Perhaps they got rid of traditional tryouts, but many college sports have “invited” try outs.

  3. Gargamel starts the post with the title of “The Importance of Walk-Ons,” yet he references a walk-on helping to win a dual track meet several years ago. I would expect a reference to a recent event or multiple events to support his assertion that walk-ons are so important. But, I guess he’s done a sufficient job of dumbing down expectations.

  4. According to a source, bucket was denied over a half century ago!

The voice might of changed, but the breath still smells the same……ouch!!!!

  5. i know of no other blog, business or brothel where 90% of the customers vociferously complain about the establishment, yet CONTINUE to patronize it, often with zealous devotion!! i think even PRISONERS complain less about their accommodations, than the Dummies on this blog complain about the wolfman!!

it’s no wonder psychologists, scientists and philosophers are among the readers of this blog! it is a true anomaly!

and the capper is wolfman is the best sports blogger in the country!! fearless, objective and a super sleuther of Sweeeet Scoooops!!

the Cadre has your BACK wolfman! you keep ooooooon Scoooopin’ baby!!!!

    • Remember those two old guys who sat in the balcony on “The Muppet Show” and mocked it the whole time? Part of the appeal of this blog is it gives us a chance to act like those two guys.

      • it does help that wolfman is unfazed by even the most vile, clever or base insults.

i think the worst i even saw were the comments after his first video report 3-4 yrs ago. if i remember correctly, i think a few months prior to that i recommended the wolfman do a video report “to show off his animal magnetism”. and was actually quite shocked that he did it.

        with predictable results.

        • Probably my favorite aspect of this blog is the freewheeling discussion allowed in these threads, even if it means that sometimes some truly vile things get posted (jokes about dead players, for instance).

It’s probably a good thing that they don’t allow comments anymore on Wolf’s videos with his young co-hosts, although I do remember a funny comment a few years ago when a UCLA fan was complaining about how unfair it was that John Gold would post his “Two Fat Guys Talkin’ Football” videos while Wolf would post videos with a hot Asian girl.

        • If Gargamel wants to be treated like a professional then he should conduct himself like one. His lazy and antagonistic reporting is unprofessional. And since the DN will not remedy the situation, the readers of this blog have decided to address his unprofessionalism.

Gargamel uses this blog to mock and belittle everyone that he perceives to be a threat to his diminutive standing in the world. The entirety of his work can be summed up as sloppy journalism based on laziness and half-truths.

Have you two ever considered why no other beat writer is subject to the same criticism as Gargamel? Rather than point fingers at everyone else for his woes, he should do a little introspection.

    • Did you delete your own post on the “Morning Buzz” thread? I don’t see what was offensive about the Claw of the Wolfman.

      • Odd I saw it back up, now gone again. I just said HH fears wolf….also I used a Hannibal Lechter line on Helen and that was deleted. Best guess she turned the water works to the moderator and he cut both my comments.

        So unfair.

          • c’mon Snufster, that was a line from the classic movie Silence of the Lambs, wherein i was drawing a parallel to Helen’s pandering to the Dummies on this site to Clarice’s struggles in a male dominated west virginia upbringing….both of their goals were to reach acceptance in their respective fields: the FBI and wolfman’s blog.

or wasn’t that obvious?? you’re the guy always quoting Latin which i don’t understand, do i get all up in your grill???

  6. The basis of this post was a swimmer (w.o. a scholarship) who made a huge gift to USC – well if anyone can name any exjock that ever ponied up that kind of scratch like to hear of it

Most athletes with scholarships have been pampered most of their lives – look at the ex-NFL stars aka ‘bums’ lining up for the ‘head trauma’ settlements – there is a reason none of these clowns give anything of substance – they never hit the books nor had to hold a job – it was all given to them.

Fred Uytengsu – the president of the largest dairy in the Phlilippines – Alaska Milk –

Tony Dorsett is lookin’ for his payout

    This post is a joke

    • I agree with the sentiment of your post but disagree about them having it all given to them.
It is a highly competitive field that rarely plays favorites. Many who have earned their way in then seem to think they are entitled to everything else for the rest of their lives.

      • I agree – Junior Bridgesman owns (what?) 10 Wendy’s? He ‘sensed’ every play day has an end – unlike goofy rock stars or professional athletes – they always think the scratch is there regardless.

I have taught for over 9 years inner city – so. central LA – a mere 3 miles NNE of Serra and < 5 miles due so. of USC. I understand your post about it being a highly competitive field but there is no 'head check' for these kids about 'what if'? Not from mom and dad (if there is a dad) nor from their coaches – no rather it's a 100% throw of the dice on what's going down in Indianapolis-IN today through Sunday. I get their goal but I don't get the border lines nor the 5 star high school players –

Instead today we have glorifying socialist – marxist – leninist 'social justice; idiots demanding 'justice' and more for the ilk clown in the White House to screw because that pathetic 'househand' could give a rip about anyone but his next round of golf at Charles Barkley's "Get It On And Bang A Gong GC" – Barkely is 'on point' because of his demonizing the father of that poor sap who 'came out' from the MO football team – I so totally hate the left!

        • Here we go calling the President of the US a “househand” again. I guess somebody at Occidental or Harvard Law should have taught him his “place”.

          • The ‘Amazing Fool’ is back! Welcome ‘Amazing Fool’…..

Wow since he got a BA and JD that means he’s qualified right? Let me make your lib argument for you ready? Bush Jr. went to Yale and Harvard – uh oh (says the lib) what now?

Truly Obama is the worst president and laziest this nation has ever had – he makes Carter look like Lincoln. Sure plays a mean round of golf

Pray tell where else was I wrong ‘Amazing Fool’? I know the company you own has <50 employees so you're exempt from Obamacare

Notice the 'Amazing Fool' "monitors" that which is posted here 'lest anyone (moi) not tow the DNC talkingpoints

          • Jethro don’t know if you saw the ‘flag’ on your post but looks like vinnie’s flunkies are working overtime to protect the one and only vin-dawg chevrolet.

Paid his dues allright – 23 yrs. old and set for life

          • Once again, you miss the point. It isn’t about politics or about the DNC. It is about describing the president as a “househand” aka the “house n.”

Using racist terms don’t help you in making a political argument.

          • Oh so that’s what that word means? Hmm never heard it with the ‘n’ word thrown onto it – carry on

          • it’s is beyond obvious what happened to the Comrade. he taught in an inner city school, and expected to be treated like a hero, but was likely ridiculed incessantly by students and staff, and quite possibly abused in some tragic fashion.

the literature (and experience) reflects two main types of Racists: the first are raised ignorant and literally “don’t know no better”. the second group are often characterized by those who have been victimized by a specific group. Comrade demonstrates a victim’s anger and pain and know that we know his history, i consider my diagnosis confirmed.

    • Comerade. I think it’s fair to say that SUCC: the University is shirking its responsibility to make sure SUCC athletes are prepared life w/o sports.
