QB Announcement Time Line

Would Steve Sarkisian see any reason to name a QB at the end of spring practice? That would seem foolish if for no other reason Max Browne might transfer if he is not named starter. But would Cody Kessler care if he had to wait all summer after starting last year.

Kessler is such a good soldier I doubt he would mind. So it seems prudent to wait until August.

  1. Genius deduction…would have never come to this conclusion myself…even though this is the way it’s been done since the beginning of time…

    • Sam, I don’t even follow Scott’s deduction.

As Scott himself has written, the question here is whether Browne demonstrates measurably more upside than Kessler. If Browne does not, Kessler will be the starter. Experience plus equal upside? Why NOT start Kessler?

What will make it difficult is if Browne shows more upside, but will make more early mistakes. Then it’s tricky.

It wouldn’t be fair to Browne to curtail his opportunity to improve over the Summer and in the Fall, and take his best shot to show his potential to surpass Kessler. If you’re going to recruit the #1 or #2 QB in his class, you have to be fair to him, right? It shows both the coach’s good character AND his good business judgment.

Maybe this will be a legitimate controversy after Spring practice. I’m with you–right now, the controversy is a total non-starter.

    • Kessler will be the starting QB for at least two years if Kessler is selected 2014 QB. So Browne would have to sit two more years and then have to compete with Ricky Town (a RS Fr.) for the 2016 QB start. Browne would be daft to sit until 2016. So Browne either starts or transfers.

  2. I usually don’t crack on the wolf, but why would browne transfer? it makes no sense and is manufactured BS
