Pete Carroll Speaks!

The groundwork for an insufferable evening was laid when Pete Carroll was introduced at Bovard Auditorium as a “modern-day philosopher.” Uh huh.

That was followed by this pearl from Caesar.

“When you’re really doing your best is when you’re working to be the very best you can be,” Carroll said. Especially when you make $7-8 million.

At Least Malik Marquetti Is Playing Well

USC commit Malik Marquetti scored 25 points last night, including 14 straight points in the final minutes, to lead Long Beach Millikan past Rancho Verde. He also was 14 for 14 on free throws in the second half.

Can he play tomorrow against Oregon State?

QB Announcement Time Line

Would Steve Sarkisian see any reason to name a QB at the end of spring practice? That would seem foolish if for no other reason Max Browne might transfer if he is not named starter. But would Cody Kessler care if he had to wait all summer after starting last year.

Kessler is such a good soldier I doubt he would mind. So it seems prudent to wait until August.

Still On The Case

BEAR.FOOTBALL

I’m still checking with university sources to see if anyone can tell me why there is a bear clutching a football on the side of the Accounting Building. Stay tuned.

A Pete Carroll Follow-Up

I want to once again mention what an awful job USC did the past two weeks letting the general public know if there was any access to tonight’s Pete Carroll talk at Bovard Auditorium. I asked a USC official more than two weeks ago and never got a response, which is why I hesitated to say anything about possible public tickets.

The event is apparently sold out with students but still, it would have been nice to let fans know what was going on for the event.

USC Morning Buzz: Pete Carroll v. Basketball . . . Who Wins?

CAESARDoes anyone doubt that if USC sold tickets tonight to hear Pete Carroll it would outdraw Thursday night’s basketball game against . . . Oregon State or Oregon? Who can remember.

Did you know two young USC graduates are the agents for Michael Sam? And one is the son of a USC trustee? No, we are not referring to Jamie McCourt.

Finally, there were 2,697 fans at Blair Field for Tuesday night’s USC-Long Beach State baseball game. How big is that? USC’s biggest home crowd this season is 916.

Adoree Jackson Football/Track Talk

Adoree Jackson said on the USC weekly radio show he intends to do the long jump and new track coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said on the same show she intended to use Jackson as much as possible.

Well, count me skeptical. First, spring football often cuts up the track season. And then you only have to see what happened to Marqise Lee during his sophomore track season after he added muscle from football weight training. It made him stronger and also lowered his long jump marks.

So there is a lot of optimistic track talk right now. But let’s see how things turn out later, especially if Jackson turns out to be as good as advertised during his freshman football season.
