USC coach Steve Sarkisian said freshman center Toa Lobendahn wears the hallowed No. 55, which traditionally goes to a top linebacker, because it was originally promised by Lane Kiffin and Co.

“It was something that came up in conversation with the previous staff and it was the right thing to do,“ Sarkisian said. “Somebody has to wear some numbers.”

That may or may not satisfy the former players who wore No. 55. Story here

  1. Scottie: there is no jersey controversy; centers traditionally wear numbers in the 50’s. People like you who try to manufacture a story here and will be the first ones to criticize the head coach when they assign the number to a new player if the head coach did retain this number only for special linebackers.

The bigger question is playing center in the best interest in Tuerk given the comments yesterday that his arms are too long to snap the ball when the QB is behind center. Will this hurt his NFL draft potential in a couple years? If his best opportunity in the NFL is guard or tackle, then shouldn’t he allowed to play there in college?

    • “People like you who try to manufacture a story here and will be the first ones to criticize the head coach when they assign the number to a new player if the head coach did retain this number only for special linebackers”? Please tell me you are a subway alum.

  2. You know what numbers are usually reserved for walk-ons and fourth-string tailbacks? Nos. 36-39.

You know who was last year’s offensive MVP? Buck Allen. He wears No. 37.

Numbers only matter to fans with nothing better to do, and washed-up former players still stuck in their college days.

    Numbers mean sheeeeeit.

  3. wolf, these players are fighting for playing time, and you focus on jersey numbers and footlockers? trOXans are coming to your blog desperately looking for news and you pin their hopes to a freshman’s jersey? tell me have something more wolf!

what are you gonna talk about now, their favorite color??

  4. Scotty, I agree, this is a huge controversy. I’m amazed that all the major sports networks haven’t reported on this. The only thing I can figure is that they don’t give shyte because nobody other than you cares. You’re a fat loser.

  5. “That may or may not satisfy the former players who wore No. 55. Story here”

Has any former player brought the issue up or complained about it since you KEEP mentioning what a disaster this is to “tradition”

  6. My Nephew wore 55 at his college because it was his favorite player’s number, Jr. Seau but my nephew was the long snapper and nobody thought twice. It is entirely possible the number is a favorite of the player. Back in 20gate the recruit would only sign if the AD gave up his retired number. Oh the scandal
