Ex-USC Assistant Coach Joe Callero Becoming Toast Of March Madness

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was a lousy team a week ago but then it won the Big West Tournament and tonight the Mustangs defeated Texas Southern in the NCAA Tournament. When I say Cal Poly SLO coach Joe Callero was a former USC assistant, I should explain the significance of his role.

Callero coached Brian Scalabrine in junior college and followed him to USC. Or maybe he made sure Scalabrine came to USC with him. Guard Quincy Wilder also came down from Seattle with them.

And their reward? They got to spend a season (or three for Scalabrine) with Henry Bibby.

  1. The toast of March Madness?! A16 seed beat another 16 seed to play Wichita St. Yeah tomorrow night CPSLO WILL be toast!

    • Be kind! Wolfie obviously forgot his meds today.
BTW, the reason Joe was given an Asst coach position was to get ‘Q’ (who was considered the hot one at the time) as part of the package. Big Red had already made his decision. When in doubt, talk to the players…something Scott aparently was not privey to. ‘Q’ it turns out had been over-hyped, so Jose instantly went bye-bye. Scott may know his football, but he doesn’t know Jack about hoops…particularly during the BEBHDBMF/ Rav/Morrison tenure.
